When I was a kid I’ll I ever wanted was to get out of Lexington. It was a small town; all the kids went to the same school. Cornfields surrounded us. Gossip spread around like the flu. If you were cheating on your husband, you were caught that night. When my father died, the whole town stood by my family’s side. They all brought flowers and casseroles. The summer before senior year, my mother decided it was time for a fresh start. So me, my little brother, and her packed up and moved to Sunny Side. I was ready for a new start, I didn’t care that I was leaving behind all my best friends.
Sunny Side was another small town. I was completely disappointed when we first arrived. But I soon found out that there was a city 20 miles away, that had a jumbo sized mall. Being 17 years old, I had only been to a mall about 3 times. But fashion was my thing, I just had to order the decent clothes online when I was in little Lexington. Now way was I wearing things from Goodwill. As soon as we arrived in Sunny Side, my mom quickly found a church for us to go to.
But in my first weeks of coming to Sunny Side, my life turned upside down. You have no idea how much I regret wanting to leave Lexington. I would do anything to get my hands on a time machine, and turn back the clock. Because of Sunny Side, I’m not the same Taylor Nelson that I used to be.

Because Of Sunny Side

“Taylor! Noah! Hurry up, we’re going to be late for church!” My mother yelled storming through the upstairs hall. I rifled through my boxes of make up with were splattered all across my room. I yet to unpack all my things since we moved to Sunny Side last week. I applied my last coat of eye liner, and pulled my black hair into a high pony tail. I took one last look in the mirror, and  tromped down stairs to the living room, were my mom was waiting.

“Why do you insist on wearing your make up like that? You look ridiculous Taylor!” My mom exclaimed slapping her hands on the thighs, her face twisted in disgust. “I just like it like this.” I replied rolling my eyes. “I think she looks pretty.” Noah said joining us. I could always count on Noah to be on my side. Were as close and a brother and sister can get.

We all piled into our old ford explorer, and drove over to the church. It only took us five minutes, considering how small Sunny Side is.

All eyes landed on us, as we walked inside. We were the new family in town. And currently the outcasts.

I already knew school was going to be like this, even though me and Noah were starting school on the real first day, which sadly was tomorrow. All the kids in Sunny Side have known each other since they were babies. They already had their cliques. And some of them have already found the one they want to marry.

Believe me, I’ve had a boyfriend before. And I even left one behind when we move here from Lexington. But I never have been in love. The only reason I believe in love is because of my parents. You could tell by the way that they looked at each other that they were in love. And the fact that our old house had paper thin walls.

I touched my heart shaped locket, and thought of my dad who gave it to me in his last weeks. Every time I wake up, I still expect to smell his famous blueberry muffins cooking in the oven. But lung cancer had to ruin everything.

“Hello, I’m Reverend Edwards. And who must you be?” a tall man said, shaking hands with my mother. “I’m Diana, and these are my children, Noah and Taylor.” My mother replied motioning to us. “Nice to be you all.” Reverend Edwards smiled, extending his hand for me to shake, which I reluctantly did. Then I smoothed the invisible wrinkles out of my blouse.

A boy who looked about my age walked up, and stood next to Reverend Edwards. His sandy blonde hair was slicked back. His green eyes took all the air out of my lungs. And under that plaid shirt, I’m sure he has a killer sick pack.

“This is my son, William.” Reverend Edwards said smiling. I don’t think this man was capable of frowning. William shook the three of us hand, and we introduced ourselves. I felt my knees weaken, as his eyes raked over my body.

“You can call me Will.” He said staring into my eyes.
