Grace Anderson was the bossiest, rudest and most annoying woman in the village of Lewbury during the 1930s. Hardly anybody, including her own family, liked her. In fact, she was despised by many. Although there were lots of women similair to her, she was the one who stood out from the crowd.
However, one night in 1939, everything about this woman changed. It was in September, and Grace was in the living room of her house with her husband, Andrew. It was the last night they got to see each other before he had to be shipped out to go to war. Of course, it was a tough time for both Grace and Andrew, but they knew that they could still contact each other while he was away. Like most couples would have done in Lewbury that night, Grace and Andrew decided to spend their last night together romantically- kissing each other until the time was completely over.
It was of their best interest, therefore, that their daughter didn't catch them- but unfortunately to the pair of them, she did. When Grace spotted her daughter standing at the other end of the room, staring at them been romantic, Grace got up and yelled at her daughter. "Etta! Get out of here, now!" she cried, while the poor girl didn't understand what was wrong- she was young and was not informed on this type of thing. On the other hand, Grace did not see it like that, and she got up and smacked her daughter, scaring her and causing her to run away upstairs.
"I wish you wouldn't hit her like that", said Andrew to his wife.
"Well it is for the best. I love my daughter, but I believe that I have to be extremely firm with her, since it is the only way she will learn", replied Grace.
"Come on, honey", said Andrew, "we don't have long to go now".
"Are you frightened?"
"Frightened? Frightened of what?"
"Well... everything. It will be hard out there- you do know that, don't you?"
"It is not like I have a choice!"
"I know, but I wish you didn't have to go!"
"So does every woman with their loved one. Everybody is experiencing the same problem here, Grace, not just you".
"I know, but I am scared".
"Scared of what?"
"I am scared of you not coming back home".
"Do you know how much I love you?"
"Well, no, I am not you. How much do you love me?"
"I cannot describe in words how much I love you".
"I feel the same way".
"The point is, would I go away for God knows how long, and not ever come back to you?"
"No. Of course you wouldn't".
"Exactly. Now, has that stopped you worrying?"
"Well, as long as you're promising, it's fine with me".
"Good, that settles it".
"What time is it?"
"We have not got long to go. Let's make the most of it".
However, Grace did not retaliate to that. She didn't do anything. There was silence for several seconds, but then she said to Andrew, "Andrew... there is something.... I need to tell you..."
"Go on then".
"It doesn't matter. Just forget about it. Let's make the most of the rest of the time we have together before we are not allowed to see each other again".
"That is what I planned to do."
Those plans changed. The second that man said those words to that woman, another man stormed through the door, with a huge bouquet of roses. This shocked both Grace and Andrew. "What on Earth!?" cried an extremely puzzled Andrew. Grace's heart was beating rapidly. "Hugo! What are you doing here?" she said.
"I came to see you, like I always do", replied the man in the doorway.
"What on Earth is going on!" cried an enraged Andrew.
"Oh, Andrew, I'm so sorry", Grace cried.
"Sorry?! Sorry?!" yelled Andrew, "you were going to see another man after I leave?!"
"No, it's not like that...". Andrew did not listen. He simply got up, and punched her directly in her face. Grace screamed, and begged to stop, but the enraged man just carried on hitting her and kicking her. Of course, the man she was cheating on with was bound to react, and he did, by joining in beating her up, because he also did not know that she was married. Both of them cried "how could you?! How could you?!" Grace tried to stop, but she couldn't. Upstairs, her daughter could hear her screaming for help.
The woman, who was in deep remorse, was rescued when her sister came in through the door. The plump, slightly older woman came in through the door to see her husband-in-law before he departed, when she witnessed the outrage. Immediately, she ran towards the three of them and cried, "what on Earth is going on here! I want to know!" Grace, who was mortified at her two lovers finding out about her deep dark, secret, said to her sister, "oh, Polly, I'm so sorry!" and carried on weeping.
Not knowing what to say, Polly, Hugo and Andrew left the house, all completely stunned at what happened. Grace had made many enemies that night, and she regretted that, because although she thought that she was safe and nobody would come back that night, somebody did go back, and the next morning, right by the fireplace, Grace was found dead.
