Prologue

"Can't I just get one moment's peace from her?" said Christine, in the middle of a corner shop.

"Look, just because she's your rival, it doesn't mean you get to talk about her all day long!" cried George Morris, the husband of Christine.

"But it's everything I do, everywhere I go, she has to get involved in some way, and then she does something even more outstanding than I do!" yelled Christine.

"Well, it's not like she's stalking you..."

"That's exactly what it's like! I wish she was dead!"

"Do you really wish that?"

"I certainly do. Without her, the world would be a better place. Well, at least I don't have to put up with her tonight".

Just as Christine said that, the door opened, and when she turned round, she saw her rival, Ava Gillington. All through their lives, Christine and Ava had competed with each other, and the vast majority of the time, Ava won by a mile.

"Oh, Christine", said the wealthy woman, sarcastically, "how nice to see you here".

"You too, Ava", replied Christine, just as sarcastically as Ava.

"Well, Ralph and I are looking forward to tonight".

"Tonight?"

"Of course. We are invited, aren't we? I would love to see how well you are at hosting parties".

"It's an awards ceremony, actually, and for your information, I can host a better evening than you!"

"Prove it!"

"Alright then. Tonight, you get yourself and Ralph down to the Ratley Arms, and you'll be talking about it for months to come!"

"We'll see about that! We'll be there, and we'll come early!" cried Ava, leaving the shop, without buying anything.

"They'll be our guests of honour", said George, "we'll even get them front row seats".

"For crying out loud!" yelled a stressed Christine, "why does she always get in the way of everything!"

"Well, you didn't have to invite her".

"I wanted to show her how good I am at been a host. Anyway, I am better than her, and I will prove it tonight!"

"I hope so. I've booked a couple of surprises, and Ava and Ralph will enjoy them!"
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure. Have I let you down before?"
"Excuse me", said the man at the counter, "are you going to buy anything?"

"We'll talk later", replied Christine.
