Harmony (POV)

January 24, 2052

Guess who showed up today at our doorstep? Yep, that’s right, my father. After two years of being gone, he just expects me to have open wide arms for him to come home and save us. He can think again. He walked out on us, mom’s dying and he randomly shows up. Screw him.

I woke all the kids up, and we’re doing our daily routine, I take mom her food, than walk the kids to school with Thomas in tow. While I was out in the garden watering the plants and vegetables, I heard someone walking up to the place we called home. I quietly snuck back to the door, and dropped everything I was carrying when I saw him.

“You.” I said. He looked at me, “yes me” he said. I looked at him in disgust and yelled at him to get off of the property and to never show his face again. He obviously didn’t agree, and pulled me to him and he wrapped his arms around me, and told me he would never leave again, and that he was sorry for all the pain he caused. I couldn’t say anything or look at him. I was speechless.

But I needed to go out of the town a little ways, and I couldn’t take Thomas with me, and someone needed to look out for Mom. I guess, we could say that I need my dad, at least for a couple hours. I sighed knowing what I was going to have to do. I looked at him, and told him that I needed him for a few hours, and that was it. He asked me why, and I told him why I needed him at home, because I needed to walk out of the town to go get some more food, and other necessities that I would need to take care of the kids and my mother. He nodded at me, and went inside the house, I followed him in.

I walked into my mother’s bedroom and bent down to look at her face, “Mom,” I said, “I have to go into the other town, dad came home, and he’s going to be here with you and Thomas. If I’m not back in time, he’s going to get the kids. I’m sorry, I love you and I’ll be home as soon as I can get back.” She acknowledged me by giving me a weak nod, I leaned down to kiss her forehead. Now on to say see you in a bit to Thomas. When I went to go say goodbye Thomas, he was playing some sort of game with our dad. I remember the game from when I was a kid, but I don’t recall the game. I haven’t seen Thom smile this much in a very long time, and I was so happy to see it. I walked over to him, and picked him up and told him I would be back in a little bit. He looked at me deeply a little unsure, but smiled in the end. Then I went onto my so called father, and gave him very strict instructions on what to do, he said he would follow them. I told him if he didn’t, he will pay a very big price.

I had managed to make it to the next town fairly quickly, about an hour and a half. I did a fair bit of running there though, because I want to be back as soon as I possibly can. I walked through the town, walking into the stores every now and then. Remembering what I went there for, I quickly went and got mom’s medication that cost quite a fair chunk of money I have to round up to save. I see a few things I can afford for the group of us that we can use, and I find a story book dropped on the ground and I pick it up and head back home.

By the time I reach home, it’s about 2pm, so I dropped everything off, checked on Thomas and mom, told dad I’d be back soon. I started off walking towards the school, just thinking about dad and him being back. I needed to talk to him about being home, and why? I don’t quite understand it, after all this time, why now? Makes no sense. I glanced down at my watch, than realize it’s 2:30pm, and I’ behind scheduale, and begin running to the school. When I got there, I signed all of the kids out and we began walking home together. They all told me about their day, and I told them who was home. The younger ones were excited, but Max, he was a little different with his response. He snorted at me and asked why I allowed him inside. I told him, I had no choice, I couldn’t take Thom for a 3 hour walk, and feel safe that mom would be okay, and that we will see how dad is with everything, and not to worry, I was going to talk to him about it all after. Max just looked away and started kicking a stone. It wasn’t until we got home when I pulled Max aside, and all the others went back inside.

“Max.” I said, “you need to calm down.”

“No, you just need to lay off! He’s been gone for two years! And you just go and let him back in, what’s wrong with you?” He said with anger.

“Max… please. I- just trust me, okay? You owe that to me, I do a lot, for you, and everybody else.” I said looking right into his eyes.

He nodded at me and went inside, where I soon followed.

Dad told me his case, why he was there. He said that it was a mistake to leave, he saw how bad mom was while I was gone. He said that he should’ve never left for me to look after everyone, I was only 16 at the time, and it wasn’t right. “I’m sorry.” The words keep echoing in my head, “will you ever forgive me?”

Later that evening I went into my bedroom that I shared with Max, and he was sitting up staring out the window. “Max?” I said and he looked at me with an icy cold glare. “What did I do?”

“traitor.” Was all he said.

“Max,” I began, “please understand what I’m dealing with here. You know how mom is, she’s dying! You don’t think I need help around here?!”

“Harm, mom… She needs you, NOW!”

I looked at Max, then left the room and walked down the hall to check on our mom, and she was laying there as usual. I went to go sit on the edge of her bed, and that’s when I noticed her breaths were shallower than normal.

“Mom?” I said nervously.

“Hi…Harm” She said slowly.

“Mom, please hold on.” I said looking into her tired eyes.

“Harmony…look after the kids, I love you all. You’ve done so much for me, for all of us.”

“Mom, please.” I said beginning to feel the tears fall.

“I love you, Harmo…”

And those were her last words, her eyes closed, her chest still. She was dead. My mother was…dead. I stayed there for a long time and fell asleep on the floor until my dad in and woke me up.

“Hey.” He said, “Wake up, go lay down in your bed.”

“Dad,” I said with tears welling up, “she’s gone.”

He had a look on his face, and nodded slowly. I got up off the floor and went and crawled into bed with Max, not bothering to lay in my own bed. I didn’t want to be alone that night.

Harm, is there a pun on her nickname ? The way she reacted to her father's return; one side it is rather unrealistic, I expected more drama, another is it very realistic, in a sense that it highlights her desperate state.

Also you're missing 'came' in 'my dad came in'. His reaction of leaving his daughter sleeping on the bed while his daughter lay asleep on the floor is somewhat weird, but it reall depends on his characterization, as uncaring and etc

I really want to see more of the father, I tend to love the 'bad guys' and the story that got them to where they are.
