She walked towards the frightened girl, a knife in one hand and a length of rope in the other. The girl’s eyes were wide and pleading, and stood out against the darkness cast by her short brown hair. She spoke;
“Shadow,” she said in a quiet, scared voice. “We were friends. Why are you doing this?” But Shadow continued towards the girl, perfectly straight jet black hair falling down to her lower back, matching her leather outfit perfectly.
“Nyx,” Shadows voice was cold. “I think you know as well as I do that it’s my job.” Shadow had her target cornered, as she had been trained. “Turn around and cross your hands behind you back” she ordered. Nyx complied and Shadow could no longer see the horrified expression on her face. As Shadow approached to tie the girl’s hands together, she heard something behind her, turned, and smiled. Protectors.
“Shadow. I should have guessed it was you.” it was the boy in the middle who spoke, the leader of all the protectors, the 16 year old boss, and Shadow knew him well. From his flaming red hair and bright-green eyes to what qualities he liked in girls, you name it and she probably knew it. They had grown up together, been as close as siblings, until Shadows mother had died. Although she had seen him quite a few times since, they had all been in situations like this, which were not at all good for a catch up. Besides that, her boss had forbidden her from talking to him unless it was in do or die situations, not that she usually followed his rules.
“And I could say the same to you, Felix.” Shadows voice was strong, but her smile had dropped as soon as she had seen what he and his recruits were holding. Guns. Shadow knew that Felix wouldn’t hurt her but she wasn’t sure about some of the new protectors. Felix was a lot less careful than the Seeker’s boss in who he ‘employed’ for the job and was a lot less strict in their training, which, in Shadow’s opinion, was why they all had guns. They usually came to him asking for the job, which was almost the opposite for most of the Seekers, not that she really knew much about that. In some cases Shadow knew more about the Protectors than she did her own kind, and she suspected it was better that way.
“Drop the knife and step away from her.” Blade, second in command said, his gun pointed directly at Shadow’s forehead. Felix frowned. He knew how much Shadow was screaming inside. He knew that her mother had died taking a bullet for her, but he also knew that it was the only way to stop her. Shadow put her best knife gently on the cement floor and stepped to her left. There was no point in trying to fight even if she wasn’t scared stiff. There was only 1 of her and, including Felix, 5 of them, all with guns pointed directly at her. Shadow was now the one who was cornered. Nyx, the Protectors biggest case at hand, ran around Shadow, to one of the protectors, who took her out a side door, and away from the threat.
They were in one of those off-cuts of a shopping centre, where the janitors and garbage men and women kept all their equipment. It just so happens that this one, plain, almost completely cement hallway had a few exits leading off it too, if you picked the right door. Unfortunately for Nyx, - who had tried multiple times to used any of these many doors for a route of escape on her way down the hall - most of the doors were either locked, or lead to a small enclosed space, which is exactly what she didn’t want.
“Let’s just give them a couple of minutes” Felix said, and then he motioned for the others to put away their guns. Shadow picked up her knife and slid it into her boot, before stepping back and leaning against a wall.
“So how has life been treating you?” Shadows voice was relaxed now that they had gotten rid of her most prevalent and dominant fear.
“Oh you know, I’ve been busy.” Felix paused “We have a lot of charges these days and it’s hard when you lose them, which we often do. There aren’t nearly enough of us.” His voice was strong, but a little sad and Shadow could see in his eyes that there was something that he wanted to tell her but couldn’t. She resisted the strong urge to ask.
“I know what you mean,” she said, and stepped forward. “Anyway, I have other appointments that I am eager to keep.” She was lying, but it was a smooth lie. “So, if you don’t mind.”
“I’ll escort her, boss.” Dreagon, another protector said, which Shadow knew meant, I’ll follow her to make sure she doesn’t try and get anyone else, and continued out another door, right behind Shadow.
“Let’s go boss.” Blade said, pulling him back up the hallway. Blade had seen Felix’s keenness to follow Shadow, which was not a good idea. Felix himself had told Blade not to let him. “We have others to look out for.” And with that Felix turned and without a word he, and his crew, walked back down the hallway and took a sharp right.
