True account of a brush with the law.

This woman will get you in trouble !

It was warm, it was Friday night in Port Harcourt and we had been to a club. The music, cold beer, and beautiful women had lulled me into thinking the place was not so bad.

There were four of us in the Land Cruiser plus the driver. As happened often, there was a road block and the police invited us to disembark. Four of our number dutifully did, but Chi, believing that this was a gross infringement of her civil liberties, which indeed it was but now was not the time to discuss the point, declined their offer. A dishevelled policeman woman handled her out of the car, but before you could blink, Chi had taken off one high heeled shoe, and was laying into the guy's chest with the sharp end, whilst calling him God knows what in her native Igbo. Or, maybe she was just explaining the finer points of citizens' rights to him. Her father had been a policeman himself after all.
Eventually two of them managed to restrain her, and she was relieved of the offending shoe. It was placed in their car, possibly to be retained as evidence.
At this point I took charge of proceedings and addressed the senior officer.

"What do you want?"
"We want to search your car," he said.
"Go ahead," said I.
"No we have changed our mind" he replied, adding in the tone of an older and wiser confidant, "this woman will get you in trouble."
No kidding thought I.
A few moments of uneasy silence passed.
"OK," I said. "Now you have one shoe, and we have one shoe. Either I'll give you this one, and you'll have a pair, or your can return the one you have arrested, and we'll have a pair."
He stood  for a minute and I could see he was thinking, God preserve us from these smart arse ex-pats. Then he grunted  to a subordinate.
The shoe was returned and we got back in the Land Cruiser to drive home in silence.

I'm glad I made you smile.

I know full well why we were stopped - they wanted money. To this day I am amazed that we got off without paying any bribe, (it would not have been much) recovered the shoe, and heard no more about the incident.

Something much worse happened the next day which relagated this incident to the status of a flea bite, and I may write about that some time.
