Just close your eyes

The sun is going down

You'll be alright

No one can hurt you now

Come morning light

You and I'll be safe and sound

He raced up the stairs, his heart beating against his ribs like a drum. His ears rang with the rush of blood, his mouth flooded with the flavor of rancid spit. Eyes blurring with tears and rage, his nose clogged with the awful scent of blood and his skin tingled from fighting off the change.

He reached the top of the stairs and set out at a dead run for the room he could hear her in. She was crying, or more like whimpering really, 'cause she had no strength left to cry. He could smell her blood stronger and stronger as he neared the room. And then all of her feelings smashed into him; she was hurt, so hurt. He hadn't saved her like she thought he would, he hadn't come for her after all.

Then the pain kicked in. She felt so much pain it was almost unbearable; the pain of ripping and tearing flesh, the horror of being tortured, the searing pain of being branded. And then there was the hope, the hope that he would come and save her before she was ever hurt. The hope he could save her before they did the worst thing to her. And then the feelings of betrayal; he hadn't come for her, he had betrayed her and left her. He felt the rage and hate she had felt for him, and it nearly knocked him to the ground. She had truly hated him, truly wanted him to die. But worst of all she genuinely believed he didn't love her, that he abandoned her, that he never really cared for her.

She honestly believed that he had made her his mate, just so he could let this play out. And it made him angry, made him want to rip anything apart that might make her doubt him. That would make her believe he hated her.

He pulled open the door, not even realizing that it had been locked. He didn't have to scan or look around the room to find her, he could feel and sense her, he knew exactly where she was. When his eyes landed on her, he slowed his step down a little, afraid that moving to quickly would cause him to change. Because the rage that filled him was almost too much to handle.

His eyes raked over her naked body, or what he thought was her naked body. With the amount of blood and dirt caked on her skin, it was hard to tell if any fabric was on her at all. She was curling into a ball leaning against a solid stone table like thing, her knees drawn tightly to her chest. Her hands gripped onto her arms so tightly her knuckles were turning white, even through the blood and dirt.

The thin welted lines of scars were visible beneath the filth of her skin, showing that her weeks of torture had been enough to scar her, an almost impossible thing to do. Her arms and legs had almost no muscle left to them, and her ribs stuck out enough that each one could be easily counted.

Her once night blue hair was matted into knots, clumps of mud holding them together, and still wet with the blood she had shed.

What he could see of her face made his stomach churn with furry. The pink lines welted out to show just how bad they had hurt her. Her lips were chapped so bad they had torn, the dried blood still visible on them. One of her eyes were just starting to lose some of its swelling as her healing kicked in, her cheeks colored with the fading bruises. Although he could not tell how big or how bad they were because of the scars and blood on her face.

He swallowed hard trying to keep the change from taking him over, and to suppress his anger. He didn't need her sensing his anger, not when she had only known torture for what he knew had seemed like eternity.

He knew because the monsters that took her had hidden her from him, but they had let him feel everything she had felt. Making sure he knew how much they were hurting her, making sure he knew everything they did to her. Making sure he felt her slowly grow to hate him.

As he approached her, she cringed and sucked tighter into a ball, crying, tucking her face into her knees, trying to hide. “Go...” She whispered, her voice hoarse and ruff from fighting, screaming and crying. Yet her voice was strong and threatening, nothing about it was weak. They had broke the love they'd shared, but they had not broken her.

He knelt down slowly and forced himself not to reach out for her. He wanted to wrap her up in his arms, and never let her go again. He wanted to keep her in his arms where she would be safe forever, and never get hurt again.

“Look at me.” He whispered, hoping she would, hoping she could see that he had come. That he had found her, that he would take her home. That he would never let anything bad happen to her again.

She flinched at his voice, curling in on herself and flattening her hands over her ears, shaking her head back and forth. “No-no-no-no-no-no-no-no-no.” She muttered through the now free flowing tears, and her thin body started to rock back and forth, the no's getting louder and more panicked.

“No! No! No! No! No! No! No! No!” She said, her voice almost a scream now. She shook her head faster, and rocked harder, until she was screaming at the top of her lungs. “NO! NO! NO! NOT HIM! YOU'RE NOT HIM!” She shrieked, and jerked violently, 'causing her to hit her head on the wall. She ignored it and shoved herself backward, until her back was against the wall.

He felt his throat close up and his heart jerk. They had made her think he had come before? They had used his voice? They had made her think he hurt her? He felt his eyes gloss over with tears, but he held them in when he felt the rage build again. He would rip them limb from limb, he would make them beg for their lives, beg the way they had never made her beg.

“Please look at me.” He pleaded, moving closer again. She jumped away, shaking her head again and started her screaming of no again.

He swallowed down the hurt and sadness that threatened to choke him, and did something he hadn't intended to do. He reached out and touched her, she jerked away screaming, “GET AWAY!”

“No.” He said, his voice powerful, filled with everything he felt for her. All the love in the world couldn't match how much he loved and needed her.

She lashed at him with her fingernails, trying scratch his face, trying to get him away from her. He felt the blood from her torn and ragged fingertips trace across his skin. He caught her wrists in his hands, and gripped them only hard enough to keep her still. “Its me!” He said, still trying to get her to open her eyes and look at him. “Look at me.”

Her eyes drifted up and she looked at him quickly, but once she was staring at him she didn't look away. Just stared, like she was seeing someone long dead. “It's you.”

“Yes it's me.” He said unable to hide the joy that filled him when she looked at him, or the love that rushed into his voice when she knew it was him.

As he watched her, he saw her eyes fade into the eyes of her animal. It always took over for them if something got too hard. She searched his face and gently pulled her hands from his, and crawled into his lap. Tucking her head into his chest, she curled in on herself again. “Hurt.” She mumbled.

“I know, but no more hurt.” He said, wrapping his arms around her as tightly as he could without hurting her. He dipped his head so that his nose rested in her hair, and through everything he could still smell the sweet scent that was her.

“Safe now.” She said in a small voice, curling into him more, trying to hide her face in him.

“Yes, safe now.” He muttered into her hair, holding onto her a little tighter. And couldn't stop himself from thanking God over and over again for keeping her alive.
