Chapter One - Fate

The clicking of my heels echoed through the hall. It’s dirty tiles and grey wash walls seemed to scream a warning at me; a warning to leave. I arrived at two massive doors; the two ‘push’ signs were scratched and worn and the white paint had flaked enough to see the chipped wood underneath. I hesitated, wondering whether or not I was doing the right thing. I shrugged and pushed them open. Inside was a desk and a chair facing away from me.

Excuse me?” I said.

Hoping my voice sounded confident; hoping I could keep the trembling out of my voice. The black leather seat swung around to face me. Green eyes stared at me through half-moon spectacles that had slid down his crooked nose.

His lip turned up into a snare as he spat his reply “I didn’t think you were going to come.”

I stared at him; my reply swimming in my eyes. He raised his eyebrow in recognition and I nodded curtly. He reached into his desk drawer, shuffled through various papers before drawing out a large yellow envelope and flung it on his desk. I slowly walked up, keeping eye contact and collected the heavy package. My dark hair whipped my face as I turned my back on him my heels clicking and ricocheting off the walls, accentuating the numb, empty feel of the room.

Vasilisa, once you open that… you cannot turn back.”

The warning in his tone sent shivers down my spine. I stopped abruptly, preparing to answer him, but no words came and I continued walking. The package felt like a lead weight in my hands as if the guilt and burden of this situation had become physical. After passing back through the damaged doors again and hearing the click of a lock as it closed behind me, I let go of the compressed air I had held in my chest. I walked back down the dark hall, now becoming annoyed at the sound of my shoes; holding my future in my hands.
