Chapter 20

She stood out a mile compared to the other girls. She sat with an air of pride and she noticed things, her eyes travelled round constantly and she picked things up, she could learn from sitting in a Lesson unlike some girls here.

The Lessons started as usual, Ellie seemed really interested and was actually paying attention, I was chatting mindlessly to Richard, but one of his questions caught me by surprise “You’ve claimed her, yet you treat her equally, is this because you care for her?”

I glanced at Ellie before replying, “Yes, and because she deserves it”

“And nothing is going to go wrong with this equality?” He sounded quite cross

“No reasons I can think of, why?”

“What if she decides she can do what she likes, she’ll be killed!” Richards’s voice dropped lower as he said this

“She won’t, not after being stuck in a basement so long”

“I hope your right”

“Me two, I couldn’t lose her”

“What do you think it was like for me to know she was stuck in some teachers arms, I’m glad he didn’t lay a finger on her”

“No, but you can’t be pleased about the way she was treated, she couldn’t even eat half a bowl of cereal this morning because she had been so deprived of food!”

“I’m not pleased! I’m just glad she wasn’t treated worse!”

“How could you be treated worse than locked in a basement for over 1000 days, without even seeing the light!?”

“There was a window, in the basement” Ellie said “The moon and stars were a great comfort”

We didn’t speak again for a long time, and then Ellie took my hand

Are you cross at me?

No, just pondering

“About what?”

What Richard said, and what you said

“Jake, I’ve spent only a day with you, but I can tell that your lying to me, please, what’s the matter”

Richards right, you’re a girl, I’m meant to treat you lower than me, but I don’t want to, but I don’t want you getting hurt

“Jake, treat me the way you think is right when it’s just you and me, and the proper way in front of everyone else”

Is that alright with you?

“You couldn’t have treated me better since I’ve been here, of course it’s alright!”

I so want to kiss you now

Ellie’s cheeks went red “me too”

Then the bell went for the end of the Lesson
