Badger didn’t bother trying to break into the room, so I guessed he had given up on Ellie, so I walked into the lounge.
Sitting on the coffee table she had the guitar and was humming softly along with the guitar, enjoying the music it played. Then, after a few repeats she started singing, gently. Her voice was beautiful, and natural.
After a few repeats she stopped singing, her voice getting clogged up, and I realised she was crying. Unsure of what to do I walked over to her and put my arms around her while saying her name over and over again, hoping to snap her out of the memory she was reliving. After a few long seconds I started rocking her back and forth.
After a few more sobs she started to come back to the present, so I let go and went to put the guitar back on its stand. Not looking at her I continued to busy myself so she could pull herself together.
On my second round of straightening the photos she put her arms around me, I wanted to fall back into them, but I didn’t want her moving away either so I turned instead to look at her. “I’m sorry for whatever has happened to you, but I’m here now and I will do my best to look after you, ok?”
She looked up at me and then buried her face into my shirt and pulled me closer, I couldn’t resist, so I placed my arms around her and pulled her into me, willing her not to let go, not now, not ever.
How long we stood like that I don’t know, just embracing each other. Finally a knock came from the door. Not wanting to let go but knowing I had to get the door I whispered “Are you going to be alright if I go and get that?”
Shaking her head slightly, she let go and stood back, then without looking me in the eye she sat down on the sofa and studied her hands.
Feeling bad for leaving her I walked over to the door and opened it. Richard, a mate from school and also my revision buddy, smiling I let him in and said “Hi Richard, come on in” Moving aside I let him in, letting him see Ellie
“I’m not disturbing you, am I?” he asked
“Not at all, come on in”
“Another damsel in distress you’ve managed to pick up?”
“Yes, unsurprisingly one of Badgers again”
“You shouldn’t bother mate”
“Well who’s going to keep the population of girls alive if I don’t bother saving them?” I asked him and he shook his head but didn’t argue with me, knowing I was right.
