"Alana, get up! Get up!"
"...Uhhhh...Alex, stop jumping on the bed! Go downstairs and help Mom."
Alex is my annoying brother who is two years younger than I am. We're very similar, though. Same color hair, black, same bright gray eyes, and same annoyance towards each other. I guess I can't blame him, I mean, he is only 14 years old. He has to mature one of these days, right?
"Can't. Ma's orders are to give you a rude awakening," he laughs and sits down on my back. "Don't make me give you a wet willy."
My eyes shoot open and I push him off onto the floor. "Alright, I'll be down in twenty, brat."
He gets up off the floor and replies "Well hurry up, twit." He suddenly smirks and says "We wouldn't want to keep Jason waiting for your makeout session, would we?"
I glare at him and throw a pillow. "Better that than making out with your pillow!"
He dodges it and sighs dramatically. "Yeah, um sis, you should really stop practicing on one," he grins and closes my door before I throw an empty water bottle at him.
I sigh and run a hand through my black hair. I get up and decide to take a shower. The water helps wash away the dreads of the oncoming day. At least, until I get out and dress in a dark green short-sleeved t-shirt with my favorite blue jeans and black and white running shoes. I trudge down the stairs, jumping the last two, a habit that I am used to. I don't know why my mood is so foul today. Alex is sitting at the counter scarfing down some oatmeal. As he looks up to see my face of disgust he smiles, showing all his oatmeal covered teeth. I mouth the word "lovely" and walk towards the fridge. I decide on making an omelet and take out two eggs. I wonder if I should make one for Jason. My heart squeezes as I think of him. Its only been a month since we officially started dating, although I knew he liked me long before. We've been best friends for as long as I can remember. He is like a big brother to me and taught me how to fish, make wood bows and arrows, and fight with sticks for self defense. It was a good childhood to remember. When I was ten, he offered to teach me how to hunt, since he lived only a few house down from mine. I turned him down hoping that my dad would come home to teach me. Unfortunately, he didn't.
My dad was a Marine and it was only month until he came home. We were all excited...
On a bright Monday afternoon, Alex and I were helping Mom make mac 'n' cheese. I laughed as I threw a noodle at the wall to see if they were ready to drain. The
doorbell rang and my mom walked to the door graceful as she always is, along with me trailing behind her. She opened the door to show a tall man in a marine uniform holding his hat in one hand and
an envelope in the other. No emotion was held on his face, but as Mom grabbed the letter, he said "I'm so sorry."
My heart stopped at that moment, for I understood what it meant. My mom kept staring at him, then down to me where she knelt and took me by the shoulders. Her hands were shaking as she said "Honey, no matter what, know that Daddy is always gonna be with us. Okay? Know he is always here. He loves us and he is the most courageous man I've ever known and....and..." The tears streamed from her eyes and her voice was uncontrollable. She laid her forehead on my right shoulder and I gently held her, afraid that she might break if I held too tight. I repeated "It's okay, Mom. We're gonna be okay" over and over to her. I had no tears, no remorse yet. That didn't come until that night.
A storm blew in and blew the branches from the tree next to the house to bang on my window, screeching, and clicking against it. Alex was screaming down the hall,
mother trying to soothe him while probably holding back her tears. She had already called all our relatives and the funeral was said to be the next day. I looked up at my ceiling trying to think.
What has just happened?
I had just lost my dad. That's when I burst into silent tears, not getting a wink of sleep that night.
