Chapter 25 – At Last

“Dad!” Jun Xiong inched towards his father.

“Dad, it’s me… I’m home. Can you hear me?” He noticed his Dad’s eyes widened. His father stretched one of his wavering hands towards Jun Xiong.

Dad sees me! He finally sees me!

Jun Xiong rushed to hold on to the warmth of his father’s hand. He noticed the roughness of the hand he held on to. His father had suffered tremendously while Jun Xiong was away.

“Dad, I’ve always loved you.” He whispered.

The trembling in his father’s hand died down. His Dad fainted…

“NO! DAD!” Jun Xiong’s scream pierced through the night. His soul jerked out of Mara’s body. Her face was pale. She was ghastly white.

“Mara, are you ok?” He dashed to his lover’s side. Mara was lying on the grass. He collapsed next to her and lifted her head onto his arms gently.

A faint smile formed on her lips. “He saw you. Your Dad finally sees you…“ Mara passed out.

“Yes he did. Thank you Mara.” He muttered softly and kissed her forehead.

Jun Xiong was pacing about in the operation theatre. He fretfully observed the surgeons working on his father’s feeble heart. God, please save my dad! Jun Xiong did not want his father to join him at all. As for Mara, his fears for her had eased an hour ago when the doctors declared she was out of any life-threatening danger. Uncle Lim was standing by Mara currently.

A warm hand from behind tapped on his shoulder suddenly, causing Jun Xiong to jump. He swirled around. The hand belonged to his father.

“Son, I finally got to see you after so long.” His Dad smiled at him.

“Dad! How come you’re here?!” Jun Xiong could not believe his eyes. He soon heard the dreadful surge in beeping of the electrocardiography machine. Damn! Dad is dying!

“Dad! You’re not dead yet! Go back to your body!” He pushed his father’s soul.

“No son! It took me so long to wait for you. I want to stay here with you.” His Dad held on to his precious son dearly.

“No Dad. You don’t understand. We’ll be separated once we leave this room. There’s no point in dying for me.” Jun Xiong urged his father to return to the living world.

Tears were flowing freely on his father’s face now. Dad had never cried before

“Why? Why? Why must I be separated from you when I just saw you! Do you know how much I’ve missed you?” His father was shaking his head in disbelief.

I know! I do! I had felt the pain too! Jun Xiong found it hard to talk with a lump in his throat. He was holding his tears back. I don’t want to upset Dad further!

“I am sorry Dad. I’ve missed you badly all these while. I regretted what I had done. I love you and Mum so much! There’s not much time left! Please go back to your body.” Jun Xiong forced the words out of his mouth. He could hardly hear himself.

“Why is heaven so unfair? I only wanted to be with my son!” His father shouted.

Jun Xiong looked down. His tears were trickling down his cheeks. He was hiding them from his Dad. “I’m sorry.” He muttered.

His father hugged him for the final time. “I am proud of you son.” Those were the last words Jun Xiong heard as his father returned to his fragile body.

The heart rate monitor slowed down. His father’s heart rate was returning to normal. “Thanks Dad.” He whispered.

After more than seventeen long years, Jun Xiong had finally achieved his father’s recognition…
