Chapter 2 – Living at Philip’s Home

The beautiful melody was being played again. This time, it was Mara who was holding on to the precious pocket watch. “Why did mum keep listening to this?” Mara asked herself repeatedly over the entire week since her mother left her. Although she had moved to Uncle Philip’s massive mansion, the riches could not heal her pain nor make up for her loss.

“When will you put that down?” Her cousin Jake snaked up from behind and embraced Mara. His hands settled slightly above her chest. She jumped in her seat. Mara was constantly threatened by Jake’s presence. Unlike his father, Jake is not a gentleman. His 20 years of life had been wasted on booze and ladies. Since Mara entered her teens, Jake’s devious eyes always settled around her physical assets. He was very welcoming when she moved into his home – a little too friendly.

“I want to be alone. Please leave my room.” Mara tried to use her most courteous tone. She pushed Jake’s arms away.

“You could do with some company.” He lowered himself to sniff her hair.

“Please. I need to prepare myself. Uncle Philip will be taking us out for dinner in 5 minutes.”

“Do you need help?” Jake was hopeful with his offer as he flashed his charming smile. Most girls would fall for his debonair looks and money but not Mara.

“No. I am fine on my own.” Her curt reply wiped off his smile.

“Alright.” He leaned closer to give her a peck on her cheeks. His kiss lingered near her lips. “There’s always tonight.” He whispered into her ear and strolled out of her room.

Whew! He’s finally gone, Mara thought to herself. She was fearful of his advances but certain that he won’t have the courage to hurt her with Uncle Philip around. She gently placed her pocket watch back into an exquisite box and locked it in her drawer.

Opening her wardrobe, she was spoilt for choices as Uncle Philip lavished her with heaps of new expensive dresses. Eventually, Mara settled for a silky white dress with a V neckline and a low back. The dress complimented her maturing figure by enhancing her curves. She examined her new look and recognized a strong resemblance to her mother.

“Mum, you’ll always be in my heart.” Mara touched her mirror reflection as a tear trickled down her cheek.

“Mara dear, are you ready to go for dinner?” Uncle Philip popped his head into her room.

She wiped her tear away. “Yes I am.”
