Chapter 29 – Separation

“Back when I was a child
Before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high
And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around till I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure
I was loved

If I could get another chance
Another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said

Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamed that he
Would be gone from me

If I could steal one final glance
One final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love to dance with my father again

Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear her, mama cryin’ for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me

I know I’m prayin’ for much too much
But could You send back the only man she loved
I know You don’t do it usually
But Lord, she’s dyin’ to dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep
And this is all I ever dream”

Our last dance has ended, Jun Xiong thought sorrowfully to himself. He gazed at Mara – his new love, his newfound daughter. Thank you, Thelma. Thank you for giving me such a lovely daughter

Mara was smiling at him lovingly. I’ll miss you dearly… Jun Xiong knew their last moment had come. It was time for him to leave. He could hear a voice beckoning him to go.

He cleared his throat. “Mara, there’s something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”

“What is it?” She asked sweetly.

“Today is my last day in the human world. I need to leave...” Jun Xiong could not continue. There were tears welling up in Mara’s eyes. Please don’t cry! His heart was weeping already.

“Will you ever be back?” There was a tinge of hope in Mara’s voice. Jun Xiong knew he should not come back anymore. He wanted her to move on with her life. His love for Mara was a selfless one.

With a grievous heart, Jun Xiong shook his head. I’m sorry, Mara.

Her tears were flowing generously now. Every drop that splashed onto the ground felt like a knife thrust into Jun Xiong’s heart.

“So this is the end?” Mara uttered painfully, breaking the long silence. He looked onto the ground. Jun Xiong could not bring himself to look at his love.

“Can’t you take me with you?” I can’t do that, Jun Xiong’s gaze locked with Mara’s. His eyes revealed his heart, both related excruciating pain to Mara.

“It’s ok. I understand. We belonged to two separate worlds after all…” Mara sounded devastatingly forlorn. She’s trying to console me; Jun Xiong appreciated her self-sacrificing deed.

“Jun Xiong, can you fly?” She asked suddenly.

“I can’t really fly but I can float.”

“Do it for me please. I want to see you soar.” Is this her way of goodbye?

Jun Xiong smiled and began to float about Mara. A calming breeze slowly caressed her. The golden shower trees surrounding them swayed to the rhythm of the gentle wind. Golden petals started falling and were floating in the air. He had given her this before. This would be his first and last gift to Mara.

He watched as she started pouncing about, happily chasing the petals. He soared higher and higher. Jun Xiong began to wave his last goodbye. Please stay happy always

“Goodbye, Jun Xiong! You will always be living in my heart!” Those were the last words he had heard. He would never hear Mara’s voice again…
