Chapter one: The Beginning of the End
I sat in my English class with my hood up and my headphones in, not really paying attention to anything. Rain pattered against the window next to me. The sky was grey and gloomy and made me just want to lay my head down on the desk and fall asleep. One more hour. Just one more hour of hell then I could go home and nap. The bell rang andI took one headphone out so I could at least look like I was paying attention. Mrs. Torres walked in and over to her desk, looking scrambled. She always looked scrambled. Her long brown hair was pulled back from her face in a clip and her eyes looked a little lost. She was one of our youngest teachers here, no more than twenty-eight. She started searching around her desk and after a couple minutes decided to give up and came to the front of the room.
"All right. Hi guys." She gave us a smile. "Before we do anything today, you may have noticed we have a guest sitting over there." She gestured over to the tables at the side of the room where an extremely attractive guy with messy brown hair and big brown, puppy dog eyes sat."We have a student teacher for this semester."
The class suppressed their groans. Student teachers were horrible. They never seemed to be as good as the normal teacher. They never got as into it.
"Guys, this is Mr. Hendersen. Do you want to come up and introduce yourself a little?"
"Yeah sure." Mr. Hendersen stood and walked up to the front. "Well, like Mrs. Torres said, I'm Mr. Hendersen. I'm a junior in college studying for my teaching degree. I'm here to be your student teacher for the semester and I'll be taking over teaching you guys Catcher in the Rye in a couple days."
The whole class groaned. We were finishing The Great Gatsby this week and doing out exam next Monday then we'd just move right along to Catcher. Mr.s Torres always did this. She'd finish one thing then rush into the next. Like there was no off button on the woman.
"Guys, come on. Be nice." Mr.s Torres said."Mr. Hendersen isgoing to be observing and helping me out until he takes over so I expect him to treat hi with the same respect you to me. Got it?"
A few nods. A couple grunts of agreement. I just looked down at my desk. There was graffiti all over it from kids getting bored in class. The desk was like their own personalchalk board apparently. I sighed and reached into my backpack and pulled out my purple spiral notebook. There was really nothing better to do than write or doodle my own graffiti. But I'd have respect and not do it on the desk.
Mrs. Torres talked for about twenty minutes about pronouns or something then assigned us the rest of the class period to silent read. I decided I didn't want to. I'd already read The Great Gatsby the year before and found it utterly stupid. It was basically just about people cheating, drinking, partying then getting what they deserved and dying. I actually cheered when we watched the movie and Gatsby died.
Yes, I am pure evil.
Mr. Hendersen was walking around the room as we read, making sure everyone was doing okay and answering questions as needed. When he got to my desk he stopped and knelt beside me. "Why aren't you reading?" He whispered.
"I've read it before." I replied in the same low whisper. "I already know what happens and how it happens and every stupid little detail in here." I pointed to the book lying closed on my desk.
"Well then maybe you should re-read it."
"No thank you."
One corner of his mouth turned up. "Then at least fake it."
I sighed and grabbed my book. "Fine. I'll "fake it"." I turned to a random page and set my book open on my desk then went back to my writing.
"What are you writing?"
I glanced over at Mr. hendersen and quickly closed my notebook. "Just... Stuff."
"What kind of stuff?"
"Stories. I hope to be published one day."
He gave me a full smile. "That's a great goal to have for yourself. Keep the dream alive." He paused and looked at me for a minute. "What's your name again?"
"Well, Bridgit, good luck with becomng published. But for now, fake read Gatsby for me, 'kay?"
I let a giggle slip through my lips as he stood and walked away. I was going to ike this new student teacher. And not just because he was supporting my dreams which would probably never come true, but because he was a funny guy. I always thought teachers were better when they made their class laugh.
Plus, Mr. Hendersen wan't exactly bad looking. he had dark brwn hair and big, brown puppy dog eyes. His chin was covered in stubble about the same shade as his hair and his body... it didn't look like he worked out so to say, but I wouldn'tmind seeing him without his baby blue, button down shirt on.
Whoa, getting a little out of hand there B. I told myself. I opened my notebook again and startred writing na dby the end of the period, I realized I'd made my newest character exactly like Mr. Hendersen.
