The next day, since Zack and Crea were to tired to do anything but sleep and Al was still unconscious in his room, the group decided to take a day off from school. Serene stayed in her room in silence the whole night and day with her door locked, even when Crea tried to get her to come out. Claudia spent most of the day in Al’s room to stay with her brother. He was okay, but his head ached to much to let him do just about anything. Crea went to Zack’s room with the book they had gotten from Mr. X so they could look at it together.
Locking the door behind Crea, they sat down on his bed and she put the book down between them. “You know Zack. We summons are technically not supposed to even have this book in our possession.” “But its in your language. How else do they expect anyone else to even read it otherwise?” Crea shrugged as she started going through the pages. “I don't know. Its not like we cant read it, we just aren't supposed to. Like that magazine you had under your mattress that I burned.” “Oh.” She stopped on one page and it showed the lettering, along with a small picture of Crea’s head and upper body. “Here’s my page. I've never seen this before, so its like looking at my profile that someone else has written.” “You sound excited.” “Well, its kind of fun I guess. Plus, this will make our jobs a lot easier.” Zack nodded. “Alright. What does it say?” Crea moved and sat next to him, then pointed to the lettering as if she was teaching him to read for the first time. “It says my name, height, weight and such. Oh, wait. I forgot they give titles to each of us to. ‘Crea. The summon of Adolescence.’ What? ‘Adolescence?’ What kind of title is that? I was expecting something different.” “Maybe your the youngest summon? You look the smallest and youngest compared to all of the others we have seen.” Crea flipped through pages, looking at pictures. “Yeah. I guess your right. Okay, lets see...” She went back to her page. “My strengths are ‘She likes to help out her master in any way she can and is good at making any kind of situation into a cheerful one. What she lacks in physical strength is more than made up for in speed, agility and accuracy with her bow.’ That's all it says here for this section.” Zack gave her a pat on the head. “Well, they have it down so far. Your always so cheerful, so it helps others cheer up to.” She smiled. “Yup! Lets see what it says for weaknesses.” He blinked a few times. “Are you sure?” “Yeah. It might help me improve if I know what Im not good at.” Zack shrugged. “I guess so. Go ahead.” “Lets see... ‘Crea is to energetic at times and can be a nuisance to others because of this. Her willingness to help can make others try and keep their distance. She can also be very emotional in some circumstances.’ Aw...” Zack sighed and stroked her head again. “Don't worry about it Crea. You don't bother any of us, Im sure of that.” She smiled again, then looked down at the book.
“Crea. See if you can find anything on Serene.” Crea nodded and flipped through the pages. “It should be right about... Hey!” She stopped, and Zack saw only the top section of a piece of paper was left. It looked like the rest was torn off. “Who would do that?” “I would.” They both looked at the door to find Serene standing in the doorway with a piece of paper in her left hand. The tear matched the book perfectly. She was wearing clothes that looked identical to her normal ones, but Zack knew they were ordered or bought by Claudia. She had some small burn marks on her face, but they had healed to almost nothing since the previous night. Her sleeve was now on her arm, and she had a bandana over her eye again, covering the scar. “Serene? Why did you do that? We’re just trying to figure things out.” Serene put the paper in her pocket. “Would it matter if you read my page? Would you think differently of me if you found out more of my past?” Zack looked at Crea, then back to Serene. “Well... No, I guess not. But...” “Then there is no point. Crea. You know you are not supposed to have that book in your possession. Yet you still plan on having it?” Crea hesitated, but forced a nod. Serene lowered her head. “It is your choice.” She turned around and left, closing the door behind her. Zack stared at the door for a few moments. “How did she even get in? I thought we locked the door.” Crea shrugged. “Who knows. I bet she can do a lot more than opened locked doors though.”
Going back to the book, Crea read what was on the small slip of paper that remained from the torn out page. “It says ‘Serene: Summon of’ There isn't any more.” “What else does your page list?” Crea flipped back to her page. “Well, it tells who I would be best and weakest against. It wont list every single summon of course, but at least the top two or three for each group.” “Okay. Anyone we have fought already?” Crea looked back down at the lists. “Hm... Nope. None of the names match.” “Can I see it?” She handed him the book. “But you cant read it.” “Im just going to look at the pictures.” Zack started flipping through pages. But just as he said, he could only look at the pictures. “What exactly are you looking for?” Zack shrugged. “Nothing in particular. Just seeing what they look like.” The pictures were a mass array of differences. some summons looked more humanoid and some looked like creatures from a nightmare. Some even looked like an animal one would find in the woods or forest such as snakes or even a lion. The lettering suddenly changed on the page Zack was on and he nearly dropped the book. “What the heck? Crea! Look at this.” He held the book in front of her, and she nodded, noticing what was going on. “Yeah. This book keeps track of all of the current summons and any changes they go through. This is showing the change in power level of this summon.” Zack flipped back to Crea’s page. “What's your power level?” Crea looked at the bottom of the page. “Two hundred and thirty seven. Why?” “What's the power level for humans?” Crea shrugged. “It depends on what they do and how they are. I would say you are about...” She thought for a moment as she examined him from her seat. “Twelve? Thirteen tops. The highest record for a human is about one hundred. Somewhere around there.” Zack’s eyes widened. “How can you tell?” “It basically goes by physical and mental stability and strength. Its kind of complicated at first, but not so much later on.” Zack laid on his back. “Is there some way to simplify everything that is going on?”
Crea closed the book and laid down beside him on her stomach. “You have played video games, right?” Zack nodded. “Well, think of it this way. When you beat an enemy, you get experience points and get stronger. Think of the shadows you saw our enemies go into as the points themselves. When Serene absorbed it...” “Its like she is leveling up.” Crea shrugged. “Well, sort of. We don't have a sudden stat boost when we beat another summon. We gain however much our enemy had. If I have two hundred points and I beat an enemy with one hundred, I would only get to be a little more powerful.” Zack sighed. “I guess that makes sense. I thought you said you didn't know if that was how it worked though?” Crea nodded. “Well, when Hito ate us, I felt my power being drained. When Serene got us out, I saw a bit of shadow reappear and go into me, and I felt my power return. That kind of confirmed it for me.”
Crea opened the book again. “Hey! This tells how many enemies I have beaten. ‘Demons: 2. Summons: 1.’ I guess that's about right.” Zack looked at her. “I thought you have been at this for a while? If Serene has been in multiple battles, then what about you?” Crea shrugged again. “Well, this is my first time being summoned. I knew I would have to summon Serene, and I knew how to use my weapon. I also knew other various things about what our position and duty was. It is almost like instinct to us. Or, maybe like... Programed. When I woke up, I knew how to do things, and who I was supposed to summon. After, I was told by a voice I was allowed to look over the world below, but to keep an eye on you because you were my master.” “A voice?” Crea nodded. “Yeah. I don't know who it was. It was pretty undefinable. Almost like an omnipresent voice that you could never tell if its happy, sad, angry, or even male or female.” “Weird. So its like a god to you?” She nodded. “I guess that's the easy way to put it, yes.” She looked down at her page again. “Anything else you want to know?” “Not right now. We already know just about everything with you, but what about Serene?” “Hey! Look at this!” Zack jumped up from surprise and looked down at the book. She was at one of the very last pages. It had much smaller print and no pictures. “This is like a rules and notes page about summons. It says here that we can have up to three, but it is up to the second to summon it. Apparently, the third summon will cover whatever the first two were not able to do, or are not very good at. I cant imagine what we would get since we have Serene.” Zack looked at the page. “Anything else of interest?” “Um... It says the master is able to give commands to his or her summons, and they have to obey. But there are some limits.” “Like what?” “I don't know. I have never seen these letters before. I know this part is about battles, but its nothing you don't know already.” “So you think I could order Serene around?” Crea looked up at him with a shocked expression. “Are you sure you want to try? This does say there are limits, so if you go overboard, she might hurt you. She knows that she cant kill you, but I bet she can get you to a point that you wish you were dead.” Zack nodded. “I know that, but this info might come in handy. Ill just have to wing it.” Getting up, he walked to the door. “Ill be back in a minute.”
Going to Serene’s room, Zack walked in to find Serene laying on her bed. She was laying on her back and in a perfect line with her back straight and hands to her sides. Zack locked the door behind him. “I take it you have discovered the page that says you can give commands.” Zack sat down beside her. “Yes. But we could not read what the limits were.” “That is not surprising.” “Why’s that?” “Only the more experienced summons are able to learn more lettering.” He laid down beside her. “But I thought summons were not even suppose to have the book.” “It is not enforced. ‘All is fair in love and war.’ ” “War?” Serene closed her eye. “This is basically a world war. A fight to the death with thousands in combat and with one goal.” Zack blinked. “Okay, now Im curious. What is this goal that I am supposed to be fighting for?” Serene was silent for a moment, but soon spoke. “Universal domination.” Zack sat up quickly. “Universal? What do you mean by that? I thought summons were only able to be summoned by humans! What else is summoning them?” “This is only the first stage of the battles. There are three. We are only in the first phase. Whoever eliminates the competition on their world waits for the others to finish. Then there is a final battle with all three and their summons.” “How do you know this?” She said nothing. “Serene, I order you to tell me.” “The book. It tells you everything and will continually update itself.” “How does it do that?” “That is one thing that is not defined. Think of it as a computer that is continually fed new information.” “What about when a summon is defeated?” “The page disappears. It is only one fourth its original size at this time.” Zack laid back down. “So the book tells of all the summons on the other planets to?” Serene shook her head. “No. And they are in separate planes of existence as well as other planets. The one we currently possess only tells of the ones in this plane. When both Crea's and your third summons are the only ones left, then we will be called to the final battlegrounds.” “Not yours?” “I have mine.” “Oh yeah.”
Silence filled the room for moment, but Serene finally spoke. “When do you wish to have your final summon?” Zack closed his eyes. “I don't know. I am happy with just you two, and I really don't want to have something like that blob around if that's what I am supposed to get. Wait. Crea said she knew who to summon. What about you? Do you know?” Serene nodded. “Yes, but it is also a matter of your choice. I cannot tell you who your summon would be until you want them. But it would be pointless to say since they would come in only a matter of moments.” Zack nodded. “Alright. But even if we do summon it, what would we do? Would you say it is another sibling of yours? Is it even like a human?” “I cannot say, but all summons will appear human to the public eye, no mater the size or shape. Hito looked like a three hundred pound man in his forties with a gut, to put it in your terms.” He nodded. “Alright, so I guess I wont really have to worry about something like that. Well, assuming I don't get an even fatter summon.” He felt his body shiver from the thought of having a five hundred pound man following him around. “So you cant tell me anything about it?” Serene shook her head. “Okay. Ill think about it. But Serene... Just who are you?” “I am Serene, your summon.” Zack sighed. “You know that's not what I mean. Crea said this was her first time being a summon, but with all of your scars, there is no way this is your first time. Could you please give me the paper? No, I order you to give me the paper.” Serene shook her head. “Line fifty two on the final page. ‘The summons is not required to give personal information and cannot be ordered to.’ “ “That's not fair.” She shrugged. “Go back to Crea. I have no plan on leaving for the day. If you decide to make your final summon, come to me.” Zack got off the bed. “I will. But...” He paused for a moment. “What do you think of me as your master, Serene? You seem to hate me, but you saved my life a few times.” “You are my master. That is all.” “I don't get it.” Serene crossed her arms. “You are my master. I only see you as just that. I do not think low of you, but nor do I think high of you.” Zack went to the door, but did not open it. “Can I order you to change how you act?” “No.” “Figures.” He went out, closing the door behind him.
Going back to his room, he saw Crea looking through the book. “Find anything else out?” She looked up. “No, not really. I've just been reading a bit of the other profiles. But I have found something I think I should show you. But how did it go with Serene?” Zack laid down onto his bed next to her. “Not to well. I found out a few things, but not much. I cant order her around much as I had hoped.” Crea shrugged. “I figured you wouldn't. But look at this.” She pointed to a picture and Zack sat up, looking at it. “Who is that?” It showed a picture of a male that looked about Zack’s age, but he had an expression that reminded him of Serene. Behind the shoulders, he saw a sudden incline, but the picture could not show to much. “Are those... Wings?” Crea nodded. “Yes. This is Solomon. ‘The summon of Divinity’. “ “That's some title. Is he really that powerful?” “Remember the part about who we are weak against? There is only one name, but the lettering is blocked by some sort of seal.” “What about ‘strong against’?” She looked down at the page. “It only says ‘All’.” Zack’s eyes widened again. “That cant be good. What else does it say?” Crea shook her head. “A lot of the page is either protected by that seal, or its in letters I don't understand. But I did get a look at his power level.” “What is it?” Crea seemed to hesitate. “Six hundred...” “Is that all? I thought it would be more than that.” “...Trillion.” Zack’s face went pale. “A-are you serious? What was Hito’s?” “Only about six million.” His jaw dropped. He was practically in total shock. “How are we supposed to beat him? It looked like even Serene was starting to have a hard time.” “Maybe your final summon gets stronger than your first two? We would be better off having as much help as we can anyway. Go and tell Serene to summon it.” “I guess I should.” Zack jumped off the bed. “No way am I going to be defeated by a summon when I have three!” Crea smiled, but she seemed nervous. “Uh, Zack? Whoever has him could have three to. They might even be as powerful as Solomon is.” Zack fell to his knees. “Your right. What if they are? Crea, look through the book some more. Find out as much information as you can about other summons. Maybe you will find something out about him through other profiles.” She nodded, but got off the bed. “I want to see who the last summon is first though. Lets go see Serene.” Standing up, Zack went out the door and back to Serene’s room. Once he opened the door, he noticed she was not in her room. “I thought she said she wasn't going anywhere?” He whispered to Crea. “Can you sniff her out?” She lifted her head, smelling the air. “It doesn't seem like she went far. Lets go outside.”
Going out the door that led to the dojo, they saw Serene sitting inside it, holding a piece of paper. Zack recognized it as the one from the book. When they got closer, she put it in her pocket, then lifted her left hand. “Move no further. The deed is done. Your final summon is Maria.” Serene stood up and turned around. A girl came from around the doorway and bowed. “Its nice to meet you Zack.” Maria, as Serene called her, looked like a girl about his age and stood about Serene’s height, but maybe an inch taller. She had a much softer expression, full of kindness and loving. Zack already felt like he could trust her with his life. She was wearing a white kimono with sakuras all around it and with a red obi, and had bare feet with sandals. Her light brown hair stretched to about her mid shoulders, but it was left to hang normally. On her head were two white cat like ears, and Zack saw a white cat tail gently swaying back and forth behind her. Her hands were kept together in front of her, and she kept a smile on her face. Zack thought she was by far the most beautiful girl he had seen in his life. Perhaps if Serene wasn't so cold, he would think they at least matched.
Slowly walking up to her, Zack held out a hand and gently brushed her cheek. Her skin was soft as silk and she felt so frail beneath his fingers. “Maria. That's a lovely name.” Serene suddenly batted his hand away with her own left hand. “You have a girlfriend. Do not forget that. Maria. Crea is currently acting as my younger sister. You must act like you are the oldest one of us. We are Zack's relatives as well.” Zack held his now hurt hand. “Yeah. But around Al, you’ll see him later, you can still act like a family member, but he thinks Serene and Crea are government experiments. So you'll have to forgive him and play along with his odd hobbies.” Maria smiled. “Of course.” Serene walked out of the dojo. “We must enter through the front entrance of the mansion. Follow me.” “Why do we have to go there? There's a door right here.” Zack asked and Serene looked back for a moment. “Would Claudia and Al, along with any servants, not find it suspicious if Maria came in the back way?”
The three followed Serene until they came upon the front door. Zack noticed Maria’s tail and ears disappear, and Claudia came out of Al’s room. “Oh! Zack, who is this?” Zack waved up to her. “Crea’s and Serene’s oldest sister. She just came down for an unexpected visit. Is it alright if she stays here with us for now?” Claudia came down the stairs. “Of course it is! Welcome to our home Maria.” Maria bowed again. “Thank you so much. Its a lovely home.” Serene started walking again and was soon in her room, closing the door behind her. “Well, Ill give you the grand tour Maria. Follow me!” Maria bowed again and followed Claudia. Zack knelt down and whispered to Crea. “When you said the last summon makes up for what the others lack, I think this one is mostly for Serene. Their practically opposites.” Crea smiled. “Yeah. But just because she’s nicer doesn't mean you can take advantage of it. She's still your summon.” Zack’s face went red. “Of course! What kind of person do you take me for?” Crea crossed her arms and looked up at him, staring. “Your the one who said it was tempting to put a camera in Serene’s shower.” “Yeah, but Al is the one who proposed it. Oh, whatever. While Claudia shows her around, lets go look at that book for her profile.”
Zack and Crea sat on his bed, looking at the large book. Crea thumbed through the pages until she finally stopped. “Was this page there before?” Zack asked, but Crea shook her head. “Nope. The book will add a page when a new summon is... Summoned. Lets see. Maria. ‘Summon of healing.’ It says she is basically a healer, but isn't very strong. Her power level is only a tiny amount over mine. But a healer would be good to have.” Crea looked up at the ceiling. “So basically, we have me for distance and speed, Maria for healing, and Serene for... I guess front and power. Were a pretty balanced team!” “I don't know if it will help us beat Solomon. I don't have a problem with her, but I don't know if Maria will be a whole lot of use in that battle. I don't think any of us will.” Crea lowered her head. “Yeah, but we still have to try. Would you rather give up?” He shook his head quickly. “No way! Im just saying I don't know how long we will last against him and his team.” Crea closed the book. “Yeah, I know. What we have to do is hope to fight other summons before we meet Solomon so we can get stronger. Remember those demons? They work the same way. They aren't nearly as powerful, but it will at least give us a bit.” “Sure, but trillions?” “You don't have to ruin my ideas like that.” “Sorry.” They heard a knock on the door and hid the book beneath Zack’s blanket.
The door opened to show Claudia and Maria. “What are you two up to? Leaving your sister behind Crea?” Zack and Crea stood up and Zack shook his head. “We aren't doing anything of the sort. Have you shown her around?” Maria nodded. “Yes, she has. She even gave me my own room to stay in, and even some clothing.” Claudia shrugged. “Well, you'll need something besides that kimono and sandals.” Maria bowed again. “Yes. Thank you so much for your consideration and hospitality. I hope I wont get in the way to much. Is there something I can do to help out?” The two left Zack’s room again, walking away. “Well, not really. We have maids and butlers for that kind of thing. Here. Ill introduce you to my brother. I think he might still be out of it though.” Zack closed the door and looked back at Crea who picked up the book again. “Well, it says she is ‘very kind and considerate’, so I guess that's how she should act.” “What's her weapon?” Crea looked up and down the page. “It doesn't say. I guess if she’s a healer, she wont need one. Lets go see what's up.”
