‘Writing a goodbye letter, I didn’t think it would be this hard.’  She thought.

Baking rocks, brown grass and wilted trees breathed elated relief for the nighttime respite. The sun had just begun to set and the harsh heat of the long summer day was leaving as a cool breeze started across the homestead. Creatures forgotten by the day were beginning to come to life.

‘Where one thing ends another begins.’

Elizabeth sat, rocking on the verandah, watching the paddocked horses play, rejuvenated in the dying heat. This was her favorite time of day and she’d sat here countless times before in moments exactly like this. It brought her clarity in a universe of mayhem. Given a world of possibilities most people would of chosen an opulent house and a hedonistic life but she chose this place because it reminded her of simpler, happier, times in her youth.

As a child, her parents had worked a hard life on temperamental land but they lived an honest life and the distinction of right and wrong was always the first consideration of any decision made. Church was a compulsory Sunday activity in the house and its moral code was sacrosanct with Grace spoken at every evening meal. Elizabeth stopped going to church when she left home for university but she was being reminded now that the morals of her youth were coming back to haunt her.

Memories of the past and a sense of foreboding dry her tongue and choke her throat. With tears swelling in her eyes her Kelpie senses her pain and licks her hand.
