By Wednesday, I’d decided detention wasn’t so bad. It lasted an hour and a half, and I spent the entire time doing homework. I figured it was time well spent, and a price well paid for a reputation Cambree said would do me good in the long run, and hadn’t landed either of us in actual trouble. So it was all really cool, actually.
Cambree was fitting in well, and that was scary. Every day, we would sit near the back where there were boys I didn’t know, and she would prop her feet on her desk, file her nails, and flirt. She would flirt hard.
I wondered if I was missing something. Didn’t her new beau, Ethan kiss her goodbye before he headed off to basketball practice and we’d come into detention today?
But I was learning something about this new Cambree; stop expecting anything, and never be surprised.
So today, while she’d flirted, I pretended I didn’t see, and that it wasn’t a big deal, and instead, kept my eyes on my homework.
“So what are you doing later?” I heard this guy ask Cambree. So I looked up.
“I’m going to Ethan’s basketball game,” Cambree told him.
She smiled. “Why?”
“I was hoping maybe we could get together and do something.”
So she shrugged. “Maybe another night.”
I looked back to my book and rolled my eyes. I wouldn’t say anything, though. Cambree knew what she was doing. She wanted a reputation, after all, and as far as I was concerned, she was going about getting it the right way.
When detention was over, I left with Cambree. We didn’t go straight home. Instead, we went to the gym to watch the rest of basketball practice. I asked her if this was OK.
“What do you mean?” she asked as she lead the way to the gym.
“We won’t get in trouble for spying on their practice?” I asked.
“Sophia, it’s high school basketball, not ARMY drills,” she laughed. She nudged me. “Come on. You know you want to see your man.”
I smiled. Maybe so.
So we went into the gym, where basketball practice was going on.
They were shirtless.
I almost fainted.
“Is this real?” I asked.
Cambree chuckled. “Yes, isn’t it wonderful?”
It was. I found Andrew easily. His black basketball shorts looked great, but my eyes were stuck to his torso.
Whenever I heard about sexy guys’ bodies before, all I heard was six pack this, or six pack that. Honestly, Andrew didn’t have a six pack. But he did have a lean, flat belly, and I could tell if I ran my hand across it, it would be pretty hard.
Wait. Did I just imagine running my hand across Andrew’s naked torso?!
He walked to the sidelines grabbing a Gatorade bottle. He spotted me and Cambree sitting in the bleachers, smiled and winked. He never took his eyes off me as he gulped his Gatorade, then he rushed back out onto the court.
“Mm,” Cambree said, nudging me with her knee. “I saw that. So. You never told me. How far did you two go Friday night?”
“How far?” I asked. She couldn’t have meant what I thought she meant. It had been our first date. How far did she think we went.
“Well you two hung out Saturday, didn’t you?”
I nodded. “Yes. We made out.”
“Of course that’s it. I’ve known the guy a week, Cambree.”
She shrugged and looked back to the court.
OK, so I didn’t want to ask, but she left me no choice. It didn’t look like she was actually going to offer to continue the conversation and I had to know.
“Well, how far did you and Ethan go?” I asked.
She smiled proudly. “He fingered me.”
I was surprised my jaw didn’t hit the bleacher. “He what?!”
She scoffed. “Oh, Sophia, don’t be so naïve.”
“Naïve?” Was she kidding? I wasn’t experienced, but I knew a little something, and letting a guy get anything, even if it was only finger, in your pants on the first date was a bad idea. “Cambree the whole school is going to talk about you.”
I was appalled. I couldn’t believe her.
“No one’s going to talk about me because you’re the only one who knows,” Cambree said. “Well, I mean, besides Taryn, Laurel and Ethan, of course.”
I shut my eyes.
OK, so for the moment, I was going to ignore the fact that Taryn and Laurel knew this huge piece of information before me. I’d be pissed about that later. But she thought those three wouldn’t tell the school? Really? Like Ethan wouldn’t brag to his senior friends he’s on the way to scoring with a sophomore?
Please. And she’d called me naïve.
She must have noticed how angry I looked, because she sighed. “Sophia, you have to lighten up. At this rate you’re never gonna get laid.”
“I don’t want to get laid at your rate!” I scoffed.
Cambree was making it out like I was behind, and because I was so inexperienced I was supposed to take her word for it and believe she knew what she was talking about. But even I knew that she was asking for people to start talking about her.
After practice finished, Andrew and Ethan came over to us, and Ethan leaned over, kissing Cambree right there in front of everyone.
I watched, then looked at Andrew. We hadn’t kissed since Saturday, and we didn’t hold hands or anything. I didn’t know where we stood or anything like that, either, and he hadn’t really asked me out again, but we talked on the phone a lot and ate lunch together every day.
I sighed, wondering what to do. Relationships were complicated, I realized, and I wasn’t even in one.
“So, jailbird,” Andrew said with a smile, wiping his face with a towel. “How was detention.”
I chuckled. “How is it supposed to be?”
“Then it was horrible.”
“Thank God. I was afraid for you.”
I laughed, and he smiled. “What you doing?”
I shrugged. “I don’t know.”
I’d finished my homework, and I hoped Andrew was about to ask me to do something tonight.
“Come hang out,” he said.
So of course, I agreed. I didn’t even bother to ask what we were doing. After the boys went to the locker rooms and showered up, they told us we were going back to Ethan’s house to hang out.
I called my mom, explained what we were doing, and of course, she wanted all the details. I didn’t want Andrew to know my mom was demanding Ethan’s address and phone number, or that she wanted to know if his parents were going to be there. So I pulled Cambree to the side, who understood how overprotective my mother was, and asked her.
“His parents are going to be home,” Cambree assured me. So I relayed this to my mother.
She told me I could go, but to be home by nine.
“Nine?” I asked. “That works.” I saw Cambree roll her eyes. If I had to be home at nine, she had to leave early to get me there. Oh well. “Thanks, mom.”
I hung up and slid my phone into my pocket as Andrew stepped up. “Everyone ready?”
I smiled. “Ready!”
Ethan’s parents weren’t really home. I was furious that Cambree had not only lied to me, but gotten me to lie to my mother. But at the same time, I wasn’t exactly in a hurry to call her and tell her the truth, either. I really wanted to hang out with Andrew tonight, and after all. Like with the cigarette, Cambree had done the dirty work, not me.
I hadn’t really lied. Cambree had lied to me. So I was in the clear.
I’d never been to Ethan’s house, but Cambree had. I could tell by the way she greeted a Golden Retriever at the front door by his name, Bruce, and rubbed his head playfully.
Cambree had told me Ethan’s parents were doctors. Both were surgeons, and it showed. The house was sprawling, and modern-looking, with these huge windows, and a lot of ancient-looking artwork and artifacts, like African masks hanging on the walls and statues placed everywhere.
We all went the basement, where Cambree had explained Ethan’s room was. I was surprised. A house like this and the guy lived in the basement?
But when we made it to the bottom of the basement stairs and Ethan switched on his light, I realized it wasn’t just any basement, or just any bedroom for that matter.
It looked like a little apartment. A living area, a bedroom area, and even a mini fridge. I felt a pang of jealousy. He had a really nice set up.
Cambree plopped down on one couch, while Andrew and I sat on a smaller sofa. Ethan disappeared into his closet—I guess it was a closet—and when he returned, he had a bag of weed.
“Party time,” he said.
So Ethan was the friend Andrew was holding the weed for.
“Hell yeah,” Andrew said.
I kept quiet. Ethan sat next to Cambree, and he rolled a joint, passing it to Andrew. I gulped as Andrew sat back, taking a drag. Ethan rolled his own joint, and took a drag from it, then passed it to Cambree.
Now, Cambree had been doing some off the wall things lately, and every move has surprised me, but I hadhonestly expected her to turn that down. Instead, she took it, put it to her lips, and took one long, deep drag from it, blowing the smoke out slowly.
Andrew then offered me his. I shook my head. “No thanks.”
“What, you don’t smoke?” he asked.
“This is better than cigarettes,” he chuckled. “Come on, try it.”
I wasn’t about to. I shook my head again. “No thanks.”
“Sophia, you don’t know what you’re missing,” Cambree said.
I sat, uncomfortably, watching Andrew, Cambree, and Ethan. After awhile, Cambree and Ethan slipped off, saying something about getting in the hot tub. So I was alone with Andrew.
He stretched out across the couch and pulled me down next to him. His eyelids were low, and he looked like he was about to take a nap.
“Are you mad at me?” he asked.
“Uhm, no,” I said. “Why would I be mad?”
“You seem pissed about the weed.”
I seemed pissed?
I shook my head. “No, I’m not pissed.”
He smiled. “Good. Come here.” So he pulled me forward and kissed me. It felt nice to kiss him again. So nice, I almost didn’t stop him from sliding his hand up my rib cage.
“Andrew,” I scolded softly, pushing his hand away.
He chuckled low, and husky, and tried again. “Sophia.”
“Andrew I’m serious.”
“So am I. I promise I won’t go under your shirt.”
I didn’t know why he was so convincing, but this time, he put his hand on my breast, on top of my shirt, of course, and I didn’t stop him. It wasn’t a big deal, right?
We kissed longer, and he kept testing his boundaries, letting his fingers play at the hem of my shirt. With his fingers on my belly, touching the skin there, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like to let him do what he wanted. That was normal, though, I guess. To want to know what it would feel like.
But I wouldn’t let him. I wanted to, even as he slid his hand up, slowly, I pushed it back down. I thought about what Cambree told me she let Ethan do to her. What that would be like.
Andrew didn’t push anymore. He kept his hands on top like he promised. But still, I wanted to. I wouldn’t, but I couldn’t deny that wanted to see what was next, even if it was just for curiosity sake; to know what it would be like to go just a little bit further.
