“Are you ready for this, Grace?” the instructor asked.
“Yes,” I replied uncertainly.
“Okay Grace,” the instructor shouted over the noise of the air craft, “It’s your turn. Go! Go! Go!”
My heart leapt out of my chest as I fell through the air. Alicia, my best friend, talked me into parachuting with her. That’s why I’m spinning through the air, hundreds of feet from the ground. I took a deep breath and pulled the string that releases the parachute, and…nothing happens. I look up above my head.
Oh my God, the parachute didn’t come out! I pull the string several more times, harder and harder, and nothing happens. I am falling through the air with a defective parachute. I can’t even hear my own scream over the rush of wind. The ground is coming up fast. I am going to die, I realize. I close my eyes, clutch my hands together and pray.
I prayed like I never have before. I ask for forgiveness, oh Lord, my heavenly father. Let me enter those pearly gates if I die. Lord, spare me, so that I can live. Lord, help me, I don’t want to die, but if I must let me into heaven-over and over I prayed. A few moments later I hit the ground. I wasn’t dead.
I opened my eyes. I looked down at myself. I was standing in an open field. I wasn’t even hurt. There wasn’t a scratch on me. I fell to my knees crying.
I saw a hand held out to me. I took it, thinking it was one of the instructors or parachuters. When I was back on my feet, I looked into his face. On his head was a crown of thorns, his eyes forgiving and wise. I looked down at his hands holding mine. He had holes in his wrists. I gasped, “Jesus.”
