“Happy 18th birthday Carson!” Sarah yelled happily at me as I answered the phone.
“Thanks Sarah I was surprised when I didn’t get a call this morning at 6.” I laughed siting against the wall cross legged.
“Oh Sweetheart your brother has been kicking the hell out of me. Like I mean come on I want to sleep.” I smiled to myself.
“Well you can always tell him to shut up and sleep.” I could hear her ‘tisk’ at me.
“Carson…” She said in warning. I took my hat off running my hand through my hair.
“Sorry. Force of habit…” I sighed.
“I know sweetheart. I wish this was different but…” I sighed.
“It is what it is.” I messed with the hem of my pants.
“I’m sorry I brought you done on such a special day.” Sarah sighed on the other end of the phone.
“It’s fine Sarah. Don’t worry about it. I guess I’m always going to have to deal with the scars from my past.”
“I know Car, but I just wish we could have won custody a while ago and got you away from her.”
“Sarah I haven’t seen or heard from my mom in 3 years. It’s nothing new. I bet you she won’t even call to say Happy Birthday to me.”
“She isn’t important Carson baby. Don’t dwell on it.” Nic stuck her head out the back door to look at me.
“Gin, we have to go soon. The picnic starts soon.” I nodded at her.
“All call you later sweetie I think I’m going to take a nap anyway since your brother is sleeping at the moment.”
“Alright Sarah. I’ll call you tonight.”
“Oh your Father might get a call into you soon as well…you never know.” I could hear the smile in her voice.
“I would give anything to hear his voice right now.” I cleared my throat as I felt the need to cry. I rubbed my eyes painfully.
“I’m sorry sweetheart. I’ll talk to you later. I love you Carson.” I took a deep breath.
“I love you too Sarah. Thanks for making my Dad happy. He really deserves a woman like you.”
“Have a good birthday Lightning McQueen.”
“I’ll try.” I smiled hanging up the phone. I put my hat back on my head getting up from the wall walking into the house locking the door behind me. I walked out the front door to the guys who were already by the SUV ready to leave. “Sorry it took so long.” Everyone looked up as Ben started the truck.
“Don’t worry about it Car. We didn’t mind. We were fighting over music on our ride there.” Liam said from the back seat as I slid in next to Tucker. I closed the door looking out of it as Nic pulled away from the house. I stared out the window as the guys fought over what song to play off Nic’s iPod hooked up to the radio. I felt a hand on my shoulder making me turn to look at Tucker.
“It’s alright to cry Carson.” I shook my head looking back out the window holding tightly onto my phone.
“I miss my Daddy, Tucker.” I closed my eyes as the tears spilled over my eye lids. “I miss him so much.”
“I know.” He pulled me to him. “I know.” He soothed me quietly….
We pulled up to the school thankfully around noon as Nic was about to slaughter the guys from the hour in the truck. I open the door laughing at them getting out looking at the school happily. It’s been weeks since I’ve been here. Hate to say it but this place grows on you. “Well…” Tucker says looking up at the main building.
“CARSON MCQUEEN!” A voice scream before slamming into me hugging me tightly.
“Mason what are you doing?” I laughed at him hugging him back as he spun us around in circles.
“I’m saying happy birthday to my favorite girl.” He smirked kissing my cheek loudly.
“Hey I thought I was your favorite girl!” Nic yelled from the car as she got out smacking Blake on the arm for pissing her off the whole ride here.
“Oops.” He laughed at her. “You weren’t supposed to hear that.” I laughed as he put my feet back on the ground.
“I’m hurt Mason!” She pouted at him putting her hands on her hips in front of him.
“Oh you know I love you both.” He laughed pulling her into the hug he still had me in. “You’re both my favorite girls.” He laughed kissing both of us.
“Yeah sure we are.” Nic laughed pushing against Mason’s wall of muscles trying to get out of the oh so famous headlock hug of Mason’s. You see Mason isn’t you average guy around here. He comes off like a totally badass with no feelings about what happens to other people. I’ve even heard people say he has no feels at all. That he was an emotionless meat bag. Mason was a stereotype all his own. He was tall, dark, and handsome. The tripe play in my eyes. He stood about 6 foot 4, with these amazing blue eyes that could turn any girl to mush with even 5 minutes of looking into them. He had a shaggy hair style going on at the moment leaving it falling into his eyes instead of his normal crew cut style. As I said before, Mason is a wall of pure muscle. He was a mean machine. He could scary a grown man into tears by just staring at them. But the one thing no one really ever stood around to see was his heart of gold. He hated to get on the wrong side of a friend and loved to spend time just moseying around like the teenager he is. He likes to make people smile, hated to see you hurt, and loves to see you laugh. He was the biggest softy around here. Mason has been my best friend since I started school here. He understood me, he comforted me. I don’t know what I would have done without him there with me. The one think you always needed to remember about Mason was he was loyal like a pit-bull. He will protect you till you’re last breath.
“Aw you two are my favorites.” He smiled letting her go. “Even if I love Carson a teeny bit more than you.” Nic put up her hand at him.
“No you didn’t.” She huffed at him trying not to laugh.
“Don’t be jealous of our relationship Nicole Brown.” He huffed back at her. “Just because she has nicer hair than you.” Nic picked up as piece of her light chestnut hair jaw dropped at him as he burst out laughing at her facial expression.
“You’re dead Mason Swift!” He shrugged at her.
“Not now Sweetheart. I have catching up to do.” He laughed at her as she huffed crossing her arms at his attempt to wave her off.
“Fine. I’ll just have to get you back later than.” She said putting her face up at him turning her head away from him. “You’ll never expect it.” He shrugged at her.
“Sure, sure whatever you say.” He turned to me shaking his head making me laugh. “Come the party has just begun.” He smiled pulling me closer to him waving away Nic. “Go help your friends while I speak to McQueen here.”
“Fine.” She winked at me making me know she wasn’t taking this to heart. “Bitch aren’t you Mason?” He winked back at her throwing his arm around my shoulders.
“Well….” He said as we walked off. “Did she this year?” He asked as we got over to the old swings the school had. I sat down on the swing shaking my head.
“Not a peep.” I sighed moving slowly back and forth. He sat down on the swing next to me.
“Carson, you can’t care.” I looked at him. “It’s been 3 years. Don’t put yourself up there, just to come crashing back down.” I looked down.
“She’s my mom. I hope every year I could get a phone call just to say hi or to tell me happy birthday.” I looked out into the crowd of people who were getting ready for the picnic. “No matter what I do I will never be good enough in her eyes.” Mason looked at me.
“You don’t have to be Carson. Don’t say that. You don’t have to be anything in her eyes. You’re everything in mine. In your father’s, in Sarah’s, you’re everything they expect. You’re in the picture. She cut herself out. Not you.” I closed my eyes.
“Why can’t she like me?” I asked him quietly.
“Because she’s a bitch. Car, don’t ever think like that.” I shrugged at him. “Baby Doll look at me.” I turned my head slightly. “It’s you’re 18th birthday. You should be happy, ecstatic to be a year old. An adult now.” He shook his head. “Not sitting here wondering what’s not wrong with you. There is nothing wrong with you. I would know. You’re one of my best friends. You and Nic. I don’t know what I would do without you two.” I sighed.
“How’d your break go?” He sighed.
“I don’t know how I deal with them I swear. I mean I swear I was going to rip my own hair out.” I smiled at him.
“You could have talked to me.” I said to him moving back and forth.
“No way of calling you McQueen.” He said matter-of-factly. I rolled my eyes at him.
“Sarah and Dad got me an iPhone. I’ll give you the number before I leave.”
“That would be good.” He smiled at me shaking his head. “Car?” He said after a moment of silence making me look at him.
“Thanks for always being there for me.”
“What are friends for?” I smiled weakly at him. He smiled back standing up looking to the crowd as I spotted some of the guys we hang out with in school. They waved. Mason put his hand out to help me off the swing.
“Float like a Cadillac.” I smiled taking his hand.
“Sting like a beamer.” I could never be sad when he says that ever since that movie came out.
“Come on I see-” I saw a oh so familiar face making me brake out into a huge smile. He smiled at me making me brake out into a run jumping into his arms holding on to him with all my might.
