“Hey Carson what took you so long?” Nic asked looking at me as a wave crashed into our legs.
“Oh nothing. Just didn’t feel like running.” I shrugged looking into the ocean. She looked back and smiled at me.
“Oh sure Carson.” She smiled at me doubtfully. I looked behind me at Tucker as he watched me with Nic.
“Shut up.” I smiled walking more into the water so it was up to my waist as the guys laughed pushing each other into the water.
“We should put sun screen on. Don’t want to be burned do we?” I shuddered remembering when I got burnt terribly.
“No did you bring some?” She nodded at me as we both moved out of the water to go back to the towels as Tucker shook his head smiling as he walked to the water. His hand slid over mine as I smiled at him. He leaned his mouth to my ear to whisper in it.
“I’ll get my kiss you know. You will see.” He breathed out making me shudder.
“Whatever you say.” I bit my lip looking at him. He winked at me before jogging off to go to the guys. I turned to look at Nic as she shook her head at me walking over to the towels and bags.
“Carson I know you like my brother.” I looked at her.
“You’re mad at me?” I asked her my voice dropping. She looked at me cocking her head to the side.
“If I said yes what would you do?” I shrugged.
“Tell him I’m not,” I scrunched up my nose trying to figure out how to word it as I put sunscreen on. “I would tell him it would not work.” She looked at me.
“You would do that? Even though you really like him?” I nodded.
“We have been friends for 4 years. I wouldn’t throw that away for a boy.” I smiled at her handing her the sun screen for her to put on my back for me.
“That means a lot to me Carson.” I looked back at her from over my shoulder.
“It’s what we do. We stick together no matter what.” She nodded handing me the bottle of sunscreen so I could put it on her back. I squirted some sunscreen into my hand and started to rub it on her back and shoulders.
“Carson I don’t mind you dating my brother.” I stopped for a second before starting again.
“You really mean that?” She nodded.
“Yeah I do. Just promise me you won’t forget about me.” I shook my head.
“I could never forget about you Nic.” She smiled at me.
“Thanks Carson.” I put the sunscreen back in her bag. “One other thing Car.” I looked at her. “Don’t be all lovey dovey with him in front of me. You can be when I’m not there but please not in front of me.” I nodded putting my hand out for her to shake. She shook it.
“Deal.” I laughed as we walked back to the water. We walked into our waists in the water. I watched as the boys dunked each other under the water.
“They’re idiots.” She laughed at them. I nodded a small smile forming on my lips.
“Yeah.” I turned to look at her but saw something that made me stop what I was going to say. “Do you see that?” She turned to look.
“See what?” She asked scanning the ocean where I was looking.
“That boy is way too young to be on his own in waves like these.” I pointed to the boy who looked to be maybe 4 or 5 maybe 6.
“Where are his parents?” She gasped as she saw what I meant. I looked at the wave that was coming in that was well over his head.
“That’s going to knock him under. Come on we have to help him.” I moved in the direction of the boy as the wave crashed over him. I started to walk faster as the guys stopped horsing around to see what we were doing. When I didn’t see him resurface after a minute I dove into the water to get to him faster. I stopped where he was and looked around the water looking for the boy. I could feel my heart as it pounded as I tried to find him. I watched as his head came up to the surface before going back under as a powerful wave washed over him sending him under about 12 feet away from me. I dove into the water crashing through a wave myself to cover the distance between the little boy and me. I opened my eyes under the blue water. I saw the boy as he struggled to get to the top, and it looked like he couldn’t swim to well but he was trying. I swam over to him gripping his arm pulling him up to me as I swam to the top as he took hold to me for dear life. I broke the surface standing up as the little boy coughed holding on to me. “It’s alright sweetheart I got you.” I soothed him as he coughed trying to get the water out of his lungs. “What’s your name sweetie?” I asked him blocking a wave with my body so it didn’t hit him.
“Oliver.” He gasped at Nic got to us.
“Well Oliver I’m Carson.” He looked at me his breathing still quick from the struggle. “Let’s get you out of the water and back to your parents alright?” He nodded moving his hands to around my neck holding on to him as he tried to breathe quicker.
“My chest hurts Carson.” He whimpered at me. I rubbed his back gently making my way out of the water.
“I know Oliver. Just take nice deep breaths.” I looked around the beach as Nic walked next to me. “Do you know where your Mommy or Daddy is?” He nodded looking up from my slick shoulder and lifted his little hand to point towards two women. One very pregnant woman looking around frantic as the other clicked away on her phone.
“That’s Mommy and that mean woman Becca.” He looked up at me coughing again. “I don’t like her.” I rubbed his heaving lungs as I made my way over to the two women.
“Excuse me Ma’am?” The frantic woman looked up at me. She jumped up when she saw Oliver in my arms.
“Oh my god! Oliver I have been looking everywhere for you.” He looked over taking his arms from around my neck and moved towards his mom.
“Mommy.” He held on to her as she hugged him close.
“I’m so sorry Baby. I couldn’t find you.” She looked up at me. “Oh thank you so much. I don’t think I could ever thank you enough.” I smiled at her.
“Ma’am my pleasure. I must say though he is just too young to be on his own in the water.” She nodded.
“I was gone just a minute to go get us some ice cream. I thought I hired you to watch my son not text your stupid boyfriend.” She turned her head to snap at the girl sitting in a bikini in the sun who was texting. “I should have taken him with me. Oh I’m so stupid.”
“Don’t worry Ma’am. It’s alright because I was there to save him.” Oliver started to cough again as his mom put him down. He stumbled over to the towel his Mom was sitting on and taking the water next to Becca and taking a sip from it. Becca looked up from her cell phone for the first time before yanking the bottle away from Oliver’s lips and out of his hands.
“Hey Brat that’s mine.” She snapped at him before pouring all the water out next to him as he stared at it. He must be thirsty from all the salt water in his mouth and down his throat when he was drowning. “Why don’t you go cry to Mommy about that?” I looked over at Oliver’s Mom as she stared at Becca in shock. I was angled so she couldn’t see her but when I turned to look at his Mom Becca saw her. “I mean it was hot and you wouldn’t like that you sweet innocent baby boy.” He looked at his Mom as she shook her head walking over to Becca and yanking her out of the chair. “What are you doing?” She yelled at her making her sun glasses fall off her face.
“Get out. Don’t come back. I’ll call your Mom to come pick you up. You will never come near my son or my family.” She let her fall as she grabbed her stuff.
“Mommy I’m thirsty.” Oliver said looking up at her. She bent down to look in the big beach bag for a water bottle.
“Oh no that was my last one.” She sighed. Nic cleared her throat.
“I have one he can have. It’s cold too. It will help his throat feel better.” His mom looked at me as Nic jogged over to our stuff before going through her bag.
“Oh I’m sorry I don’t even know your name!” She gasped. I smiled putting my hand out for her to shake.
“I’m Carson.” She shook my hand. “And the other girl is my best friend Nicole.”
“I’m Ava. You already know my son Oliver since you saved his life.” She sighed running a hand through her hair. “I can’t believe I trusted that girl with my little boy.” She shook her head getting upset.
“Ava you weren’t to know she was a bitch.” I said gently at her she started to laugh at me.
“You’re right I’m sorry it’s the hormones. My doctor said I shouldn’t swim. That’s why I hired Becca to come. Such a bad idea.” She shook her head and put a hand on her pregnant stomach.
“It’s not your Ava.” I smiled at her. She sighed. “If you think it is then you’re going to start believing it was your fault.” She looked at me.
“You sound so wise for such a young girl.” I shook my head.
“I’m only 17 years old.” I shrugged as Nic came back over and handed Oliver the water bottle.
“Mommy can you help me?” She bent down and opened the bottle for him to drink.
“I really don’t know how I can ever thank you two.” She started to get upset again.
“Ava don’t worry about it.” She shook her head pulling a piece of paper out and grabbing a pen.
“Here is my cell phone number in case you need anything. Our house number in case I don’t answer my cellphone. And in case you really need something and no one is answering my husband Mark’s cellphone number. He always has it on him so someone answers when you call.” She handed me the paper. “Please feel free to call if you need anything.” She handed. I looked at the paper.
“I will.” I looked at Oliver as he guzzled on the cold water bottle watching us. “If you ever need anyone to watch him I’d be more than happy to watch him.” I watched as tears formed in her eyes again.
“Oh Carson thank you so much.” She hugged me before hugging Nic. “Thank you too.” Nic hugged her back. I wrote my cellphone number down on a piece of the paper she wrote hers down on and handed it to her.
“In case you need anything. Or even just need to talk.” She smiled at me.
“Thank you Carson.” I smiled at her. “I think it’s time I pack up and take Oliver home to see his Daddy.” He nodded still sipping on water.
“Do you need any help?” I asked looking at all of their things. She shook her head.
“No you two have done enough.” We both shook our heads.
“We don’t mind helping Ma’am. It’s something we like to do.” Nic laughed at her. She shook her head.
“This is all easy stuff here. I can do it.” I nodded.
“It was very nice to meet you Ava.” Nic smiled at her. Ava smiled back at her.
“It was amazing to meet both of you.” She was picking up her towels and folding them into her bag.
“Don’t fret to call.” I sat as she picked up her bag and took Oliver’s hand as he finally stopped drinking the water.
“Same to you Carson. And again, thank you. For everything.” I watched as she walked away. I took a deep breath closing my eyes. I jumped as strong wet arms wrapped around my waist pulling me to a strong wet body.
