I had no choice but to freeze. The voice had made me want to throw up, to scream out to leave me alone. This woman is my mother. She gave birth to me. That she carried me for 9 months and held my new born body. But she did put me through hell. She made me fear everyone around me. She beat me till breaths of my life. I’ve cowered under her hands any times before. She’s used every penny to my name for her selfish needs. “What do you want?” I asked quietly. I didn’t want to deal with it. Sarah says that stress is ad for the baby.
“I can’t call and tell my only daughter hello?” She sneered at me. Did she know I was pregnant?
“No, you can’t.” I said shortly at her. I was tired, my feet hurt, and I really did not want to have to deal with her right now.
“Well where does it say that in the mother’s handbook?” Tucker held me close to him. I knew he was remembering the last time I had a conversation with my mother. I ended up on the boardwalk bleeding with a broken wrist. He wasn’t letting this happen again, I could tell.
“Right next to don’t beat your children.” Hormones? I didn’t know, I just didn’t want to deal with this right now.
“Sweetheart, we have gone over this. It wasn’t a beating. I was showing you right from wrong. Discipline is perfectly legal.” She said calmly, talking to me like a five year-old. I would never speak to my child like this. And I will never put a harmful hand on them. Never. But to fight with her was a losing battle. She had no control over me now. I’m eighteen now. She had no control now, thankfully. I’m not fighting today.
“What do you want, Mother?” I sighed asking. This wasn’t going to end soon, no matter how hard I tried.
“I just wanted to ask how my husband is. You know, seeing as you have been spending more time with him then I have.” I could hear the snap in her voice as I closed my eyes. She cannot be serious here.
“If you wanted your husband you shouldn’t have cheated on him.” I shrugged as Tucker sat us up on the couch. I could hear the kids laughing from upstairs.
“What happens in my life is my business, not yours.” Ah, I hit a nerve. I was never sure if she really loved Harold, or if she was just a gold-digger.
“I’m pretty sure, that what happens with the relationship of you and my stepfather does concern me. Seeing as he is now part of the family.” I smiled.
“You need to shut that mouth of yours before someone smacks it.” She growled at me. Oh I definitely hit a nerve alright. A pretty big one too.
“Give me the phone.” Tucker said. He heard her, I know he did. My mother’s voice made all the dogs howl in pain from the sound when she’s mad. She wasn’t from Louisiana, or even Texas. She was from New York, but my grandfather was transferred to New Orleans when she was sixteen. She met Dad at school as it was a regional school. She was soon pregnant at eighteen and Dad went off the local police academy but soon joined the Marines.
“It’s fine.” I mumbled to Tucker.
“Who are you talking to?” She snapped at me. Like I would answer her. “Isabelle!”
“What Mother?” To tell her my name was Carson was useless. Not worth it.
“Who you talking to? Your boyfriend?” She was mocking me. I took a deep breath. I can deal with this.
“None of your business really.” I shrugged.
“I bet you even got yourself knocked up as well? Don’t you Isabelle?” She snorted at me. I didn’t answer her. Do I really tell her? Her first grandchild is on the way? No, Sarah was its grandmother. Not her. “You are?” She gasped in mock shock. “Always knew you were a whore.” She shrugged.
“I am not a whore.” I said simply.
“Knocked up at sixteen then?”
“I’m eighteen, Mother.” Does it surprise me she doesn’t know my age? Not at all.
“Well…” She huffed at me. “You should get rid of it now, before it becomes another you.” I felt my jaw wobble.
“I’m not going to abort my baby.” I could feel the tears forming in my eyes. How can someone ask me to abort my baby? Especially my own mother.
“No one should have to deal with something like you.” I feel like going into the corner and crying.
“Give me the phone now, Carson.” Tucker pulled the phone out of my hand as I burst in tears. How could someone say something so mean? He pressed the phone to his ear. “Can I help you with something?” He snapped as he held me close to his chest.
“I was talking to my daughter, not you.” She huffed at him.
“You’re conversation is over. Is there something you need? Or I will be hanging the phone up.” My mother growled in annoyance. She never liked being told what to do.
“Tell my daughter that she will get her just deserts.” She laughed making me cringe. “And it will be good. Oh boy will it.”
“You are one sick person.” Tucker growled into the phone.
“Oh? ‘Cause I’m sure you want to-” He hung up the phone and put it on the couch.
“Baby?” I looked up at him my make-up smeared all over my face. The tears were still rolling down my face.
“How about you go get into the shower? I’ll meet you in there; I just want to check on the kids.” I nodded getting up.
“Will you unzip me?” I asked quietly before hiccupping. He gently pulled down my zipper before kissing my neck.
“I love you.” He said quietly before picking up JJ. I pulled down my outfit throwing it across the room. I turned the water on before sitting down in the shower putting my head down onto my knees. I just wanted this to be over. I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry myself to sleep. I hiccupped loudly before sighing. “Come here.” I looked up to see Tucker sit down next to me, his costume gone, naked. I laid my head on his shoulder as he pulled me close to him.
“She’s so mean.” I whispered sniffling. He kissed my head.
“It’s going to be okay, Car.” He put his hand onto my belly.
“I don’t want to get rid of our baby.” He stroked my hair as I cried.
“I know. We aren’t getting rid of our baby. She has nothing on you Sweetheart. She can’t make you hurt our baby. It’s our baby, not hers.” He rubbed the make-up off of my cheeks with his thumb.
“I love you.” I whispered as the water pounded on us.
“I love you too.” He kissed me rubbing gently at my bump. “I love our baby too.” He smiled holding me close to him.
“Let’s get out of here.” I said sanding up with Tucker’s help to get out of the shower. I dried off and walked back into Tucker’s room giving him the towel I used.
“I called you’re parents. They should be here soon.” I looked at him stopping brushing my hair to look at him.
“Why?” I asked him quietly.
“I wanted to cuddle you and I didn’t have anyone to watch JJ. Nic hasn’t gotten back yet.” I nodded pulling on one of his shirts.
“I’m going to check on the kids and call Nic to say we’re staying here.” He nodded opening his drawer to pull out his pajamas. I found the kids still in the living room but the TV was on with a movie in. The kids looked at me as I walked in.
“JJ is asleep in the stroller.” Dakota said looking back at the TV.
“Alright, are y’all staying over tonight?” I asked the kids as they looked back at the TV as well.
“Daddy said they could.” Dakota looked at me with a pout. I smiled at her.
“No worries, Sweets.” I patted her head as she hugged me.
“I’ll go get your bedroom ready for bed.” She beamed up at me.
“Okay Carry, can we have popcorn too?” I nodded.
“Sure Sweets. I’ll make it for you. Let me go lie down the blankets for your sleepover.” I picked up the house phone and dialed Nic as I went to Dakota’s princess room.
“Hello?” I heard before a giggle.
“Nic?” I asked pulling out the blankets from the closet.
“Hey Car, How’s it going?” She almost slurred.
“Are you drunk?” She giggled again and I heard the slapping of a hand.
“A little.” She hiccupped loudly. I smiled, I was hiccupping from crying and she was for drinking. I guess I found this amusing. I heard shuffling and a moan.
“What are you doing?” I asked her pulling out her sister’s trundle bed. I could hear movement and a moan filled the phone. “Nicole!”
“Benjamin stop it.” She giggled before I heard a smacking sound.
“Will you two stop having sex for five minutes so we can talk?” I huffed at them.
“Sorry Babykins, what’s up?” She slurred as I heard the ruffling again.
“How’s my brother?” I took out the extra pillows for the five of them.
“He’s alright.” She hiccupped. “He left a while ago. I’m a little busy.”
“Alright thanks. I’ll see you tomorrow. Use a condom.” I rolled my eyes.
“I’ll try.” She giggled hanging up the phone. I walked out of the room putting the popcorn into the microwave for the kids. They were saying how they wanted to see a movie, but that Dakota didn’t have it. I watched as her face dropped. I knew she wanted it badly but her mother yelled at her for asking.
“I have it back at home. I’ll go pick it up for y’all.” They all smiled at me.
“You’re sister’s cool D.” Dakota nodded at her friend as I called to Tucker telling him I’d be right back. I took his keys and held back to the house opening the front door. I was heading up the stairs when I heard noise coming from upstairs.
“Mason?” I asked walking towards his room. Nic did say he was home. But why would he leave a party? That wasn’t like him. I shook my head and went to Dad’s and Sarah’s room. I picked up the movie before walking back down the hall. I heard the noise again then a moan. “Mason?” I opened the door looking into the room.
“Yes Mace!” I saw the two bodies on the bed. The two male moans that followed only meant one thing.
“Oh my god, I’m sorry.” I put my hand over eyes. “I didn’t mean to interrupt.” I walked out of the room closing the door behind me. I just caught my best friend who is pretty much my brother having sex. It wasn’t catching him that had me shocked. But who I caught him with.
