I drove into the drive way at home a while later as the storm picked up. I quickly got out and pulled Asher out protecting him from the freezing breeze and the pounding snow. I grabbed as my stuff
and ran into the warmth of the house. Mom was sitting in the living room in front of the fire in the fireplace drinking a cup of coffee. “Hey.” I said stomping my boots to get the snow off. She
looked over and smiled.
“Hey, you got in okay? The roads were bad when I drove home before.” She said getting up.
“They are getting pretty bad; I’ll go call TJ to come home.” I said looking at Asher as he started to whimper from being too hot.
“Who is this little guy?” Mom smiled at him unzipping his coat to help him cool down.
“This Asher, Emmy’s son. I told her I would help babysit him when she was at work because her dad got deployed.” I said rubbing my hands together grabbing my cell phone from my pocket to call TJ.
TJ* Hey Sis
Me* Hey you on your way home
TJ* Yeah coach wants us all to leave and go home before the roads get too bad.
Me*Good I was just going to tell you to get home.
TJ* Well great minds think alike.
Me* Ha-ha I know. Where is Logan?
TJ* I dropped him off at home about 5 minutes ago.
Me*Good come home before you get hurt.
TJ* Okay I will.
Me*Stay safe TJ, go slow. It’s icy
TJ* I know I’m going slowly. I love you sis, I just pulled in the drive way.
Me*Okay Love you too.
I hung up my phone shoving it back into my pocket and smiled as Asher cooed at Mom who was making funny faces at him. “Where is he honey?” She asked looking at me.
“He is coming up the drive way Mom. What is for dinner?” I asked looking through Asher’s diaper bag.
“I was thinking of making some Mac n’ cheese, chicken tenders, and some fish sticks. I know how much you love them.” She said laying Asher on the carpet on the ground so he could crawl around.
“Sure, I’ll watch Asher in the TV room. Call if you need me.” I said as TJ came through the door shaking the snow from his hair and coat. I pulled the bag and pulled Asher to the TV we now have. It
had a very comfy couch, chair, and an ottoman sitting on a dark blue carpet that sat on the light wood floor. There was a pretty big TV that Dad thought we would love to watch. I sat Asher on the
plush carpet and turned on the TV. I got out some toys that were in the big bag. I sat down as he started to play and giggle to smash the baby cars on the ground. There was a knock on the door. I
looked up at TJ.
“Hey,” He smiled.
“Hey, what’s up?” I asked. Asher showed me his toy before smashing it on the ground again.
“I was wondering what was coming from in here.” He smiled sitting down next to Asher. “Hey Buddy.” He said smiling at him. Asher looked up at TJ and held out the car.
“Cool car isn’t it?” I smiled changing the channel. He nodded.
“They coolest.” He said looking at it. Asher reached for the toy.
“Back! Back!” He whined opening and closing his hand. I slapped TJ’s head.
“Give him his toy back.” I snapped. Asher started to cry reaching for the toy. TJ gave it to him as I slipped him his pacifier which he sucked on. He started to play with his toy a little away from
TJ. TJ looked at me.
“I’m sorry. I was just looking at it.” He said looking at the Christmas tree in the corner of the room.
“Why do you look like I caught you with your hand in the cookie jar before dinner?” I asked him as he laid his head on my leg. I stroked his hair. “What’s wrong?”
“I don’t like you being along. It make you sad, which makes me sad. I don’t like to be sad. It’s not a happy thing you know.” He pouted.
“I do know. I’m just not a friendly person.” I sighed pushing his black hair up into a Mohawk.
“Hey you’re my twin sister, if I’m social then your social.” He said looking up at with his navy eyes.
“Not always TJ. He might have shared the womb but we can’t be father apart.” I sighed looking at Asher.
“Are you kidding me? We can’t be more alike. You can’t see how much you can talk to people and make friends so easily. You just haven’t tired at all.” He said looking at the TV.
“I don’t really like the people here.” I sighed still messing with his wet hair.
“Don’t like them, or don’t want to like them?” He asked. I looked down at him and poked his soft spot. “Ouch it’s a good question.” He whined.
“I don’t know TJ; I’m just no clicking with anyone.” I sighed looking at a highly entertained Asher.
“Have you tried?”
“No, I can’t really. I really can’t find anyone to really be a friend with. No one wants to be friends with the girl with baggage.” I sighed flattening the Mohawk.
“You don’t know that Sis. There could be one girl, even a guy that would be happy, even lucky, to be your friend. I know I would be.”
“Your bias. You’re not brother.” I messed with the long strains of hair on his head.
“Well besides that’s you’re a great person. Anyone would be happy to be your friend.” He started to smirk. “Or I can beat them up till they like you if that makes you happy.” I slapped him.
“I can make friends on my own TJ. I don’t need you to get your ass booted before you can make me proud. Let me make my own friends and you get ready to fallow in Dad’s footsteps, okay? I need to
fix my life, not you.” He sighed.
“Okay fine.” He looked back at the TV.
“Kids, Dinner!” Mom called from the kitchen. I pushed TJ off of me and picked up Asher walking into the kitchen. “You can put him in the baby chair.” She pointed to the seat we keep for when kids
are over. I baby sat the next door neighbors kids all the time so she left the seat over here so we didn’t have to run it back and forth. I buckled Asher in the chair and sat down. TJ sat down as
Mom set glasses out.
“Sis just think of what I was saying.” He said looking at me sideways as he started to stack his plate up.
“Sure, sure.” I said as the door bell rung.
“Sweetheart can you get that?” She asked putting some small food in front of Asher.
“Sure Mom.” I said getting up and walking to the door. I pulled it up and screamed………..
