Asher lay with his head on Hunter’s thigh as his body lay on the couch. I sat doing my homework as Hunter flipped through the
channels. “You would think that after about 8 months of no TV there would be something to watch, but there isn’t.” He scrunched up face looking at me.
“There is never anything on TV.” I said writing down the answer to an answer on my homework sheet. He looked at me fixing a sleeping
Asher. He stopped crying after we held him for a little while then he fell asleep on Hunter. Hunter looked at me.
“So how are you?” He asked. I looked up at up quickly before going back to the paper.
“I’m fine, why do you ask?”
“Oh I don’t know you just have that look that is saying something is up. I care for you and I want to know what’s wrong with my baby
sister.” I put my pen down and looked at him.
“Why do you say something is wrong?” He laughed quickly not wanting to wake up Asher how was on his lap.
“I can see it in your eyes. I called TJ the other day and he told me about your nightmares and about the ‘Owen problem’.” He
clenched his jaw and closed his eyes. He took a deep breath and opened his eyes. “You can tell me.” He said slowly.
“It’s nothing Hunter don’t worry about it.” I smiled at him. He narrowed his eyes.
“I don’t believe you. Something is up. And I know you just don’t want people to worry.” I looked up and sighed. I put my pen
“Maybe I am. Why would I want Mom to worry? She is already nervous about Dad being gone, you were gone, TJ can’t wait to go to
Parris Island and become a Marine. Everyone is going to be gone and I don’t think she needs to worry about me too.” I blinked back my tears.
“Ry, Mom already worries about you. We all do. Nothing can change that. You are the only girl out of all of the cousins. Noah might
act like a girl some times, and that’s totally all Aunt Megan’s fault, but you’re the baby ever if Sam, Aaron, and Noah are younger than you. You are the Baby girl. I worry about you even if you
are in front of me. I worry, and I always will. Even when I’m an old fart in a nursing room and you’re still walking around. You’re my baby sister. Ever since Mom and Dad brought you and mister
poopy diaper home from the hospital I loved you. Even if you thought it was fun to scream in the middle of the night, but that’s another story.” He smiled cradling Asher like he was remembering
“Not my fault. I had a need, so I cried. Simple as that.” I smiled at him going back to my homework.
“Sure, sure Sis. Whatever you say.” He smiled kissing Asher’s head. I looked at his smiling face as he looked at the baby fall
asleep sucking on a binky in his arms.
“You look so happy.” I smiled at him.
“He just, he is just so perfect. I feel like I have known him my whole life, well his whole life. It’s like he just wants me to love
him, and I do. He is like a little angel in my arms. I don’t even know. I just feel at peace for the first time in awhile.” He had that look in his eyes.
“You love him don’t you?” Hunter looked at me.
“I guess I do.” He said looking down at him again. “I don’t even know why.” He whispered. I smiled.
“I think you love him.” I smiled. He gave me that look. “Okay, okay I will shut up. But a word of advice, if you love the baby you
might want to meet the Mom.”
“Oh I would have never guessed that Captain Obvious.” He smirked. I looked at him.
“You’re tired Hunter. Go to bed.” He looked up at me. I knew he was tired before he even looked at me. But know that he did, his
eyes are blood shot. “Go Hunter.” He looked back down.
“Okay.” He sighed and handed me Asher. I laid him down on the couch in between two pillows. He walked to the door and stopped. He
turned to look at me. “Can you maybe introduce me to Asher’s Mom?” He gave me that look. I sighed.
“Fine, just be there tomorrow morning when she gets there and we will let fate take its course. I promise you that.” I nodded. He
“Thanks Sis.” I started back on my home work. I looked up as Asher started to fuss around as the binky fell from his mouth. “Aw come
here baby.” I picked him up. He opened his eyes and looked at me. “Binky?” I asked handed him it. He took it and pushed it back into his mouth. “Better Buddy?” I guess it was because he snuggled
into me. He quickly fell back asleep causing me to smile.“I guess I’m not going to finish my homework tonight. Well good thing it’s Friday.” I sighed shutting off the TV and closing my book still
holding a sleeping Asher. I slowly walked past my Mom’s room and smiled at her as she read.
“Hey Baby.” She smiled putting her book down.
“Hey Mom, I think I’m going to watch TV in my room so I get comfy before Mister Suckle Monster wakes up again. But he did face plant
into the TV stand so it must hurt a little bit.” I said moving him on my shoulder so his face was on my shoulder.
“I was looking for something in the attic and found a old crib of yours and TJ’s and I put it in your room for him to sleep in.” She
said getting up. “You said he hit his face?” She looked at him.
“Yeah but I think it’s more the shock of hitting himself then that something is wrong.” I said showing her his face. She looked him
“I think he will be fine.” She smiled. “Go put him down them get some sleep.” She nodded to my bedroom door. I nodded walking to my
“Hey Sis?” I looked at Hunter who stood in his door way fresh from a shower and in his pajamas.
“I thought I told you to go to sleep.” He looked at me.
“I know but I just wanted to tell you something.” I looked at him. “We are going to talk about what is bugging you in the morning. I
promise you will tell me. No matter what. Good Night, Sis.” He walked back in his room. I took a deep breath and walked into my room. I was tired. I laid Asher in the crib and curled up in bed
falling into a deep sleep think about what the hell I was going to tell Hunter tomorrow……..
