Chapter Twenty

I watched as Finn got out of bed and walked towards the door. I sat up and held the blanket to my bare chest. “Where are you going?” I asked him causing him to turn to look at me. He smiled.

“I was just going to clean up.” I nodded and watched as he left me to the quiet house. I rubbed my shoulders before I got out of bed to pull on one of Finn’s shirts to cover myself. I pulled my hair out of its bun and sat back down on the bed. “What’s wrong?” Finn asked as he sat next to me. I smiled at him and laid my head on his shoulder.

“Nothing. I was just thinking.” He looked at me and tucked a piece of my hair behind my ear.

“Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you?” I shook my head taking his hand into mine messing with his fingers.

“It was great, I just, you know.” He pulled me to him cradling me in his arms making me giggle.

“No I don’t know. Enlighten me, My Beauty.” He said smiling at me. I kissed him.

“Thank you for the amazing night, Finny.” I said curling up on his lap. I was exhausted and the stroking of his fingers on my back was making my eyes droop.

“Come on,” He said putting me on bed and curling his half naked body around me. I snuggled up against him. “Goodnight, Beautiful.” I smiled as he wrapped his arms around me.

“Goodnight.” I sighed falling into a peaceful darkness….

I woke up to the sound of screaming making me jump awake. I blinked as the screaming got louder. I got out of bed quickly walking out of the room to see Matty sanding topless in a pull-up and shorts. He was screaming bloody murder. “Matty what’s wrong?” I said as I dropped to my knees pulling him to me. “What’s wrong?” I rocked him as I heard running footsteps. Matty was screeching holding onto me.

“What the hell is going on?” Taylor said holding a pistol in his hands.

“Matty, calm down. It’s okay. I’m right here. No one is going to hurt you.” I clutched him close to me rocking him.

“What the-?” I looked over at the new voice. “I was sleeping. How the hell am I supposed sleep with this damn noise?” The voice yelled walking out of AJ’s room.

“Shut up, Conrad! You’re not helping the situation!” Finn yelled as I hummed to Matty another lullaby I knew.

“Well the situation is already pretty screwed up, Finnley! It is 3 o’clock in the damn morning!” He screamed back. Well this is lovely. A nice way to meet Finn’s brother. A screaming match at 3 in the morning.

“Both of you! Enough.” Taylor said walking up to me as Matty started to calm down. “What’s wrong?” He asked me as I stroked Matty’s hair and mumbled to him.

“He’s burning up.” I said lifting myself up off the ground, Matty clinging to me for dear life.

“Alright give him here.” Taylor said handing his gun to Finn. I let him take Matty into his arms but it only made Matty start to scream again, this time even louder. He reached for me kicking his legs screeching again.

“It’s okay, it’s okay.” I said taking him back into my arms. I stroked his hair and hummed to him quietly making him stop screaming. “You’re okay baby. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere.” I kissed his head.

“I have a bath running for him. Come put him in.” Bailey said as I stood up. “Conrad get back to bed before you start fighting more with your brother.” I walked Matty to the bathroom taking the stuffed alligator out of his hands as I put him in the cold bath making him whimper.

“I know, Buddy. But you’re all hot and icky. We have to wash the icky away.” I said pulling off his pajama pants and his pull-up. I wiped the tears off his cheek and kissed his head. “You’re alright.” I whispered as he gave a shiver. I rubbed at his skin trying to cool down the overly warm skin.

“I don’t feel good.” He whimpered to me. I stroked his hair. “I no feel good at all.” I lifted him out of the bath as he threw up into it. He cleared his mouth smacking his lips. “I feel better now.” He sighed. I took him into my arms and wrapped him into a towel. I rubbed him pressing him close to me. “My tummy hurts.” He cried.

“Shhhh it’s alright.” I kissed his head. I looked into the tub and pulled a face.

“I’ll clean it up.” Bailey said rubbing my cheek. “Go get him settled.” I took him into Finn’s room and sat us on the bed.

“How is he?” Finn asked sitting next to me.

“He needs some underwear and pants.” I smiled at him. He kissed my head.

“I’ll go see if I can find him some clothes.” I sat with my back against the headboard with Matty sitting on my lap, wrapped up in a towel. He was playing a game on my phone leaning against me. Bailey came into the room and smiled at us.

“I have some medicine for him to take. He’ll be asleep this time.” She said as she sat down on the bed next to me.

“I’m sorry. He gets nightmares when he’s sick.” She shook her head.

“Don’t worry about it. He just surprised us. We haven’t done that since the kids were, well kids.” She rubbed at Matty’s foot as she handed me the medicine. Finn walked in with some old looking pajamas.

“These are the best I could find.” He looked up as his mom smiled at him. “Hey Mom.” He said kissing her cheek as he handed me the clothes. I pulled the pants onto Matty’s skinny legs. He smacked at my hands enjoying being naked in his towel.

“Stop it.” I said pulling the towel away. “Don’t be a buttface.” I said putting the shirt onto him as he curled himself into me. “Take your medicine so you feel better.” I said as Bailey put it on the spoon for him. He took it, swallowed, and stuck his tongue out at us. “I know it’s icky.”

“Come on, Bud. Back to your room for the rest of the night.” Finn went to pick Matty up. He kicked at him holding onto me.

“No, no, no, no!” He screamed at him. Finn gave him a look.

“Let him just stay here for the night.” I pouted at him putting my chin on his head.

“Fine. I’m going back to sleep. I’m on duty in the morning.” Bailey winked at me getting off the bed.

“Goodnight kids.” She laughed leaving, closing the door behind her. Fin got into bed pulling Matty to him making him giggle. I got out of bed walking towards my bag on the chair in the corner.

“What are you doing?” He asked raising his eyebrow at me. I pulled out a pair of pajama pants and slipped them on under the big t-shirt I was wearing.

“Changing. I’m all wet from Matty’s bath.” I stuck my tongue out at him as he covered Matty’s eyes as I turned my back to him and pulled off the t-shirt. I pulled out one of my t-shirts and slipped it on. I went back to bed and sat down as Finn let go of Matty’s head. Matty glared at him curling up to my side closing his eyes. I pulled the blanket around us and kissed his head as I looked over at Finn.

“He took my spot.” He huffed pulling the blanket up around himself. I pouted at him.

“Are you jealous of a four year old?” He nodded sticking his bottom lip out copying me. “Too bad.” I giggled closing my eyes trying to get back to sleep. I heard him grunt in disapproval before turning over to go to sleep. “You’re a child.” I smiled to myself as he gave another grunt….

I opened my eyes to look at Finn as he kissed my head. “Hey, I’m off to work.” He whispered stroking my hair. I woke up a bunch of times with Matty as he had to throw up. “Get back to sleep.” He pulled the blanket up for me as I closed my eyes again, slipping into the peacefulness of sleep. I woke up a little later to Matty snoring on my chest. I moved him gently onto the pillow and got up off the bed. I took a quick shower before I got dressed. I pulled my hair into a pony tail as I walked downstairs to the kitchen.

“Good morning, Sweetheart.” Bailey smiled putting pancakes on a plate. “Breakfast?” She asked handing the plate to her husband.

“Yes, please.” I said sitting down at the breakfast bar they had. “How did you sleep?” Taylor looked up at me.

“Better after I wasn’t woken up by a screaming child.” He smirked at me.

“How’s he feeling?” Bailey asked putting the plate in front of me.

“Not much better. He’s sleeping now, finally. He was throwing up all night.” I shook my head taking a bite of my fluffy pancake goodness.

“Do you want me to call the doctor for him?” She asked going to make more pancakes.

“I can do it.” I smiled at her. “Thank you though.” I looked over to the hallway as Finn’s brother Conrad walked into the kitchen. I looked down at my food silently not knowing what to do.

“G’morning, Son.” Taylor said looking up from his paper.

“Morning Pops.” He mumbled to him sitting down on the stool next to him. Bailey handed him some pancakes as she made coffee. There was an awkward silence as we all ate. I looked up from my plate to see Conrad staring at me with hard eyes. He was nothing like his brother. There was nothing sweet or caring about that look. He didn’t even look like Finn. Finn has dirty blonde hair and these clear blue eyes that make me melt on the spot. Conrad, he’s the opposite. They had the same haircut, telling me they were both in the military, but that’s where it all ends. Conrad has dark brown hair that looks blacker than a murders soul. He has bright green eyes that were like icicles as they stared at me. He was a couple inches taller than Finn, his face more rugged and harder while Finn’s was sharp and thin, loveable even. I swallowed nervously shoving another bite of pancake into my mouth. It went down my throat like a block of plastic covered in glue, sticking to everything as it went.

“I’m going to check on Matty.” I muttered getting off my stool walking back upstairs to Finn’s room. I rubbed at the back of my neck as I looked around the room. I walked around picking up the clothes on the floor.

“Why are you even here?” I jumped at the sound of the roughed, sharp voice. I looked over at Conrad as he leaned on the door frame looking at me.

“I just woke up, I stayed over last night.” My voice was quiet. He reminded me of one of my many step fathers. He was vicious, malicious, and harsh.

“Don’t play stupid with me. Why are you here?” His voice was like venom. “Finn told me all about you. How messed up you are. How screwed up your life is. How about those drugs? Where are they?” His eyes were burning into me as I clutched the comforter on the bed in my hands.

“I don’t have any.” My voice shook. My palms were sweating terribly as I wiped them on my pants. He slammed his hand on the door making me jump.

“Don’t bullshit me!” He screamed. I backed up into the bed as my hands started to shake in fear.

“Please, I didn’t do anything.” I felt a little hand in mine. I looked over at Matty as he clutched my hand in fear. Conrad walked towards me forcing me back onto the bed.

“You are going to get out of my house and the hell away from my family. We don’t need your filthy blood anything near here. Don’t think of coming back. If you do, you’ll regret it.” I stared at him in horror. “You have two minutes to get your shit and get out. If you aren’t gone in two minutes, I’m getting my gun and you’ll found out what a mistake you made.” I griped Matty’s arm in mine and pulled him into my arms. “Get out.” I clutched Matty in my arms as I ran from the room.

“Ana? What’s wrong?” Bailey asked running from the kitchen. I sung the door open and sprinted as fast as I could away from the house. I thought of it as a sanctuary, now it’s my own private hell.
