“Bailey?” I heard the faint sound of someone calling my name. “Bailey wake up.” The voice said again. My head was pounding terribly. Every sound around me as I came to hurt. The room around me smelled like metal, like blood. I felt like my head was on fire. “Bailey wake up. Come on wake up!” I couldn’t remember what happened. All I could remember was Conrad being with me. Conrad. Oh no.
“Baba.” I heard the faint sound as a tap come to my cheek. I forced my burning eyes open to look at the owner of the little hand. Conrad had a pout on his face as he stared at me. “Baba!” He smiled at me looked behind him. I turned my eyes to Derek as he rushed over to me. I got a cramp in my stomach making me force my eyes closed biting my lip.
“Bailey we have to get you out of here.” I closed my eyes again making Derek curse. I felt Derek’s arms under me making me hold onto Conrad.
“Where?” I asked opening my eyes to look at him.
“Bailey I had to. I had to, to protect you. Please believe me Bailey.” I looked up at him.
“What do you mean?” I asked him quietly as my stomach cramped again. He shook his head.
“I had to. I had to.” He sobbed making me move my head. Derek pushed my head back so I was staring at him. “Don’t look. Please don’t look.” Conrad frowned at me moving in my arms making his bare chest hit my hard belly as it cramped again.
“Ouch, ouch, ouch.” I moaned painfully putting my hand to it.
“Come we have to get you out of here.” I turned my head to look at Derek as he sped out of the driveway and away from the house. Conrad stared out the window in wonder as we drove away from my prison. My stomach cramped up again making me bite my lip painfully. “Please don’t tell me you’re in labor.” He groaned stepping on the gas harder making the truck speed up.
“What’s the date?” I groaned making Conrad look up at me.
“It’s August 14th.” I could feel the tears start up.
“It’s way too soon.” I put my hand to my hard belly. “8 weeks too soon.” I closed my eyes. “I’m not ready. I’m not ready.” I cried at him. He took my hand in his in comfort.
“I’m getting you to the hospital alright? Shhh It’s going to be okay. I promise.” He had to be going at least 100 mph right now. “Has your water broke?” I looked down before shaking my head.
“No not yet.” I took a deep breath before rubbing Conrad’s stomach in comfort as he stared to get fussy on my lap.
“Good. Know hold on we’re almost there.” He said as he sped into a small country hospital. He pulled up to the front, parked the car and got out. He opened the door and helped me out holding me as my knees buckled. Conrad held onto me tightly as I tried to walk to the door. Derek held my arm helping me, holding me as we walked into the doors making the nurse jump at the desk and the man next to her jump too.
“Oh my! Oh my! Doctor! Doctor come quick!” The nurse ran over. “Oh you poor dear! What happened to you?” She asked as I handed her Conrad who instantly started to cry. I shook my head as Derek held me tighter as my knees gave out as a contraction rocked my body painfully. “Oh! Doctor! Doctor!” a man came running to us.
“Gladie what’s wrong? Oh!” He dropped what was in his hands to gently take my arm in his comforting hands. “What’s your name sweetheart?”
“Bailey. Bailey Williams.” I cried holding my stomach. He patted my hand comfortingly.
“Alright Sweetheart. I’m Dr. Halter and I’m going to help you. How far long are you Bailey?”
“32 weeks.” I held my breath. “8 months.” He gave me a sympatric look.
“Alright. Gladie get me some Magnesium Sulfate from down stairs while I go put Bailey in a room.” She nodded looking back at the man who took Conrad as he cried. I looked at him as he smiled at me. “This is Sheriff Johnson.” He smiled at me as Conrad cried in his arms.
“Come on sweetheart.” Sheriff smiled at me as Dr. Halter helped me walk to a small room and lay me on the bed. Conrad reached for me and the Sheriff happily laid him next to me. “Now what did you say your name was sweetheart?”
“Bailey Williams Sir.” I clutched the bar on the bed as another contraction rolled through me making my belly hard under Conrad’s little hands. He gave me a thoughtful look.
“It sounds very familiar. Really familiar.” The doctor walked back over with Gladie.
“What’s that for?” I asked him as he cleaned the back of my hand before putting an IV into it.
“This should hopefully stop your labor. This is also going to help you feel a little better and to take care of that baby of yours.” I smiled at him weakly. Gladie patted my good hand before putting a back monitor on my contracting belly.
“Do you know what it is?” She smiled as Itty Bitty’s heart beat came from the old machine.
“No…I never got to find out.”
“I’ll be right back.” The doctor nodded walking out. Gladie looked at me confused before looking at Conrad.
“Oh the poor thing.” She gently stroked Conrad’s hair as he held onto my arm. “He looks hungry.” Conrad looked up at her squeezing my arm before looking up at me.
“He does….” I sighed rubbing the side of his face gently making him smile at me.
“You know what? Let me call my daughter. I’m sure she can pick some stuff up from him or even just get him something. No baby should have to be like that.” She patted my hand smiling at me. “I’ll be back soon. You just relax here.” I smiled at her as the Sheriff and her left the room. I looked around for Derek but he was gone. Weird.
“Well Bailey let me see this little one.” Dr. Halter said walking back in rolling a chart next to the bed. “It’s been a while since I was being a pediatrician but I’m still pretty good.” He smiled at Conrad who hid behind my arm.
“It’s okay Baby. He won’t hurt you.” I yawned at him. Dr. Halter gently opened Conrad’s mouth and ran his finger over his gums.
“Well the little guy is going to be getting some teeth soon.” He smiled at me. “He even has one see? Show your mommy your tooth.” Conrad looked at me showing the little tooth on his bottom gum. Next he checked all Conrad’s bones to see if anything is wrong.
“Is he alright?” I asked. Dr. Halter nodded.
“Other than being really underweight he looks aright.” He looked up at me smiling. We both looked up as the door knocked. Gladie walked in with a young woman, no older than me.
“Oh good! Bailey I would like you to meet my daughter Mika. Mika this is Bailey, and her little baby.” Mika smiled at me walking over to a small chair by the bed. She dropped the bag in her hands and turned to look at us. For the first time I saw her pregnant belly.
“I pick some things up from the store but I had a lot of things from my baby shower. This should fit the little guy.” She pulled out a cute striped onesie with a monkey on it. “Some diapers, some baby wipes, a bottle, some baby formula, and some pacifiers. I almost got you this nice hospital gown.” She smiled putting her hand on her bump.
“Wow. Thank you.” I said as I opened the pacifiers and handed one to a more than happy Conrad. He sucked on it smiling at Mika and me. The Sheriff walked back into the room holding a piece of paper with a shocked look on his face.
“I knew it! I knew the name sounded familiar!” Gladie looked at him.
“Sweetheart what are you gettin’ at?” He shook his head.
“Your name sweetheart. You’re Bailey Williams!” Everyone looked at him like he was crazy. He handed the flier to the Doctor. “The pregnant girl who went missing a couple weeks ago! Everyone has been looking for her!” The doctor looked up shocked before looking at me.
“Do you know where you are?” I shrugged.
“A hospital?” He shook his head.
“Town? State?” I shook my head.
“I just found out the date. I saw sun light for the first time in weeks.” I shook my head. “I want to go home.” Conrad looked up at me taking out the pacifier reach up to hand it to me. “It’s okay you can have it Bubby.” He put it back in his mouth lying down on my body.
“You were here the whole time…” The Sheriff said rubbing his face. “I have to go make some calls.” He shook his head and walked out of the room. I looked around at all the shocked faces.
“May I take a shower somehow? I haven’t bathed in weeks.” The doctor shook his head.
“You have to wait till I’m positive you’re not in labor. And because of the baby have a birth defect we have to get you to a state hospital as soon as possible.”
“I don’t even know what state I’m in.” He patted my hand.
“North Carolina Sweetheart.” I nodded moving to change Conrad with the stuff Mika brought. He smiled at me as I pulled on the printed diaper and pulled on the new onesie.
“I’ll go make him bottle for you.” Mika smiled gently at me before turning to leave. Dr. Halter took blood from me before smiling at me.
“Relax. I’ll be back soon alright?” I nodded as Conrad curled up with me as Dr. Halter walked out. Gladie smiled at me before walking out and walked back in a couple minutes later.
“I have a sponge and a bowl of water. I can help clean you up if you want.” I nodded sitting up as she helped me so I could finally get clean….
……There was a knock at the door making Taylor rub his face waking up from his sleeping state. Fin sat up before slipping down the couch before running to the door before turning to look at his father. “Daddy door!” He cried at him making him rub his eyes before getting up.
“I’m coming Buddy. Just hold on.” He yawned walking over scooping Fin up in his arms before opening the front door. “Can I help you?” He said closing his eyes and yawned again.
“Gunny Andrews?” Taylor opened his eyes to look at Staff Sgt. Abel.
“Abel?” The Staff Sgt. nodded.
“Taylor. We found her.” He smiled at me. Taylor closed his eyes as the tears fell. Fin looked up at his Dad.
“Mommy is coming home.” He whispered into Fin’s skin as he kissed his head. “Mommy is coming home.”
