I pulled up to the apartment wincing every time I moved my arm. I hate work so much. They have no respect for me. I shook my head getting out of the car making my way towards the apartment. What is he going to say? What if he isn’t ready to be with me because I have a daughter? What am I going to do? I opened the door to the sound of Peyton crying. “Virginia?” I called into the apartment. I followed the sound of Peyton’s cries.
“I’m in here Sweetheart.” I walked into Peyton’s room. Virginia was rocking Peyton as she cried. She pouted her bottom lip reaching for me. I took her into my arms as she laid her head on my shoulder. She was sick this morning with a little cold and a stuffy nose. I rubbed her back as she cried.
“What’s wrong?” I asked trying to lull her to sleep.
“She has been crying all day. She hasn’t been able to keep anything down.” I patted her diaper. “She also has diarrhea. Poor baby.” Peyton whimpered at me.
“She hasn’t eaten anything?” She shook her head.
“She spit it right back up and started to cry.” I held Peyton ever so closer. She gave another whimper holding onto my shirt. I kissed her head as she fell into a restless nap. I let Virginia go home as I sat down in the rocking chair rocking her gently as she fidgeted in my arms. I spent the next couple hours with her crying, terrible feedings, and horrid diaper changes. I could tell she was getting worse as she whimpered and whined. She was looking paler by the minute. I didn’t know what to do. I took out my cell phone and dialed the number I knew always had the answer to help me.
“Hello, Meyer’s house. How can we help you?” The voice said on the line.
“Hudson is Mom there?” I asked as Peyton started to cry again.
“Yeah, she’s in the kitchen. I’ll get her. Everything alright?” He asked walking into the other room.
“No,” was all I could answer. He handed the phone right off to Mom as I hear a little exchange between her and the oldest twin of the two.
“What’s wrong?” She said right as she got onto the phone.
“She’s sick. I don’t know what to do.” I cradled her in my arms as she kicked crying at me.
“What are her symptoms?” She was going into doctor mode.
“She has a stuffy nose, diarrhea, and can’t keep a thing down.” I sighed as she screams at me. “Mommy I don’t know what to do.”
“It’s okay. Is her diaper wet?”
“Mom I just said it-”
“No I don’t mean that. Has she peed?” I think back…
“No not at all. Mom she’s pale.” I realized getting scared.
“It’s alright. I need you to get your keys and make your way towards the hospital. I think she’s dehydrated.” I quickly stood up grabbing ducky and a pacifier. I dressed her in a fleece snow suit before grabbing my purse slipping on my boots as the temperature was dropping fast. I pulled out my keys as Peyton wiggled in my arms as I walked out of the apartment.
“Halyn?” I turned to look only to have my face drop. With everything I forgot Reese was coming over.
“Reese. I…” Peyton whimpered moving around in my arms.
“Mama.” He was looking at her as I moved to cradle her in my arms as she started to fidget again. “I’m sorry. I need to go to the hospital.” I could feel the tears coming. These words struck him as he looked up at me.
“What? Why?” Peyton started to cry spitting out her pacifier moving her covered hands around. I rocked her gently.
“She’s sick.” I looked up at him. “And I’m scared.” He shook his head.
“Come on.” I looked at him as he put his hand on the small of my back. Peyton looked up at him copying me.
“You still want to…” He kissed my head.
“We have a lot to talk about. But it can wait.” I nodded walking down the stairs to my car. I put Peyton in the car seat and clipped her in giving her back her pacifier. Reese got into the passenger side seat as I fumbled shaking into the driver’s seat buckling in. I turned the key in the ignition only for the engine to click and not turn on.
“Come on.” I tried again only for it to click and die again. “No. No. No. No!” I groaned smacking the steering wheel. Peyton started to cry in the car seat as I tried again. “Please no.” I smacked again. Reese grabbed my hands.
“Hey it’s alright.” I looked at him. “We’ll take my car.” I looked at him as Peyton waved her arms crying harder. I had tears in my eyes as I tried to turn the car on. “Come on Halyn, it’s freezing and the car won’t turn on.” He zipped up his jacket.
“It’s not my fault.” I whimpered smacking the wheel again. Reese grabbed my hands gently as they throbbed from the cold and from smacking them.
“I’m not saying it is Baby.” I looked up at him as the tears fell from my eyes. He wiped them away with his thumb. “Come on. Let’s go get her some help.” I nodded pulling out the keys grabbing my purse. I got out getting Peyton from her seat. I grabbed her ducky blanket as she screamed unhappy. Reese unsnapped the car seat easily from the seat.
“Mama.” She cried.
“Shhh baby I’m sorry.” I kissed her head. Reese made his way over to a fancy car. If I’m right, it’s one of Holden’s favorites, a Jaguar JX. I blinked at it. 74,000 dollar car? He looked at me as he opened the back door to hook in the car seat.
“What?” He asked finishing looking up.
“JX?” He nodded.
“Yeah. Didn’t know you liked cars.” I shook my head.
“Not really. One of my brothers loves them though. It’s his favorite. I just mean…they’re pretty pricey aren’t they?” He sighed not answering. It gave me my answer. He didn’t even have to answer any more. Peyton held onto the ducky blanket as I shivered as the temperature dropped. I hooked her into the seat and closed the door as she looked around the car silently. I put the pacifier back into her mouth before closing the door. Reese handed me a jacket.
“You’re cold.” I looked at him. Even with everything that has been happening right now, he still had the concerned look in his eyes. I put my arms, painfully, into the jacket and zipped it up thankful for the left over warmth from his body. He pulled another jacket from the trunk and put in on while I got in. He followed gracefully, turning on the engine. In purred lovingly as he turned the heat on and pulling out. I watched Peyton in the mirror as he drove. Her face was getting terribly pale as she snuggled into the seat warm. I looked at Reese as he looked at me out of the corner of his eyes. “Everything is going to be alright.” I put my hand on top of his, needed the warming comfort. He wrapped his hand around mine as he drove.
“I hope so.” I was fighting the tears as he pulled up into the hospital parking lot. I cradled my daughter in my arms as Reese led us to the front desk of the Emergency Room. The nurse looked up. We registered at the front desk before going to sit down in the waiting room. I looked at my cell phone for the time as Peyton cried once again kicking around in her onesie in my arms. I tried to move to get the blood flowing back into my sore arms.
“Let me take her.” Reese said rubbing my arm. I looked at him as the people around us glared at us once again. Peyton looked at him before reaching into his arms as the blood flew back into mine my hands. I slumped my head onto Reese’s shoulder looking at the time again. 11 pm. I can’t take this. I got up and walked to the front desk.
“Excuse me; we’ve been here for 5 hours. Please, when is the doctor going to see us?” The nurse looked me up and down.
“There are more important people here to be taken care of. You have to learn to wait your turn.” She said putting her nose up in the air.
“But Ma’am we’ve been here for 5 hours. My daughter is very sick. Please.” She sighed frustrated.
“Go sit back down or I’ll make sure the doctor never sees her. Go.” I turned around sitting back down. The people under the desk stared at me sympathetically. Reese was bouncing Peyton ever go gently he was lulling her into sleep. He had his eyes closed, his jaw tight so the nerves twitched from the pressure. Peyton moved whimpering moving to lie on Reese’s shoulder her cheek pressed onto his shoulder so her mouth was opening like a fish. Reese pulled out his cell phone dialing a number. I took out my wallet.
“I’ll be right back. I’m going to get a coffee.” I sighed as he pressed his phone to his ear as he stared at Peyton. I got my coffee before sitting back down next to Reese again. He smiled at me patting my thigh.
“Miss Meyer? Peyton Meyer?” I looked up as a doctor stood in the doorway. Reese handed me my purse getting up to follow the doctor out. Something was up with him. I just have to figure out what….
