Chapter 2
Dolls Didn’t Move. Katherine Did

I held my legs against me, curling myself up in a sitting-up ball staring across the room. At a spot just under my desk where a small ray of sunlight lit up a hideous grinning doll with beautiful blonde hair and glassy blue eyes. The dolls back was propped up against the wall, her body angled so that her eyes were watching the bed where I slept. She hadn’t landed like that the night before.
She had moved.
A shiver rippled through my body as I thought that, how could she move? She was a doll. Dolls didn’t move. Apparently this one did.
I slowly uncurled myself, and with my eyes still on the doll dragged on some clothes. I crossed over to the window, pulling the blinds up, I only looked away for a second but when I looked back at the corner she was gone. I sighed in relief; maybe she had gone away for good?
Or maybe she had just moved.
I turned back to the bed and froze.
She sat on my pillow her pale eyes focused on me. No way was I going to make my bed now. Instead I grabbed my mobile and backed out of the room keeping my gaze fixed on Katherine.
I slammed the door shut and as quickly as possible without running I headed down the stairs and into the kitchen where I could hear the sound of my mum making break-fast. I sat down at the oak table and leaned back in my chair rubbing my temples, last-night had been a bit like a horror movie.
“Hard night?” asked my mum, I opened my eyes and nodded, she laid a plate of pancakes in front of me. I smiled up at her and she turned around to continue making her own breakfast.
I dug into my pancakes and devoured them quickly. So what I looked like a pig, I was hungry and besides who was watching me? My neck prickled and I turned. Sat on the bread bin, her head tilted sideways and her smile looking oh-so mocking was Katherine.
I went cold.
She couldn’t be…she couldn’t have…no, no, no!
“Dolls don’t move” I whispered hoarsely staring at the doll, I knew my face had gone pale; I knew my eyes had widened.
“What was that, dear?” asked my mum, turning around from the pan, I dragged my eyes away from Katherine and to my mums.
“Nothing mum, just thinking out loud”

I just had to get out of the house. I couldn’t stay here. Once I had returned upstairs after breakfast I had been greeted by the site of Katherine sitting up on my window sill, her golden hair glowing in the sunlight. Her blue eyes, as ever, watching me.
I hadn’t moved since then I stayed pinned to the door, knowing that if I looked away she would move, dolls didn’t move. Katherine did.

I knocked on the lined chestnut door then entered
“Go away” Claire told my instantly, and I knew there was something wrong. Her hair was uncombed and she wore no make, Claire always wore makeup, there were dark circles under her eyes and she looked frightened.
“Why?” I asked gently, frowning at her appearance, it was so unlike Claire.
“Take it with you” she spat, throwing something across the room. I caught it and looked down at it; it was the back of a red-haired doll. I turned it over, dreading what I would find.
I dropped the doll.
Its glassy green eyes stared up at me from the floor, it smiling mouth stitched together with grotesque black thread.
Her eye-lids were missing.
A small meat knife rested in her delicate small hands, its blade shining horrifically in the light let in by the curtains. And just on the edge was a tiny speck of blood.
I looked up at Claire.
She was holding her arm out shakily, a small red line was just visible on her wrist, I took a step back, it had hurt her.
“Her name is Natalie” she whispered watching the doll, both her eyes tired and red, that’s why she looked wrecked, she had been watching the doll all night, she must of fallen asleep at one point and the doll had cut her.
I shivered.
I picked Natalie up and left the room, carefully closing the door behind me and walking down her staircase, I walked past her kitchen where her mother was and out the door, the grinning doll still in my hand.
Next stop, the carnival.
