Light in the center of my darkness
My name is Mara and my life is great I guess you could say. Well to someone else it wouldn't be I mean let's face it I am a twenty five year old single mother of two children, living in Georgia on my own and holding down a job. I seem pretty normal right, well let's add in the twist. I am blind. Not legally blind where I can still see outlines, I mean totally world gone black, armegeddon blind. You are probably wondering how I got this way, well we'll get into that don't you worry. My big problem is I don't want people to know that I am blind. I like my normal life and I wouldn't change it for the world. I don't need my independence stolen from me because someone else believes I have a handicap.
I didn't start my life out blind, I ended up that way after I had to have emergency surgury to save my hearing and vision. Unfortunately there was nothing that they could do for my vision but I can still hear the sweet sound of my children's laughter and the wonderful sound of music. I met a few wonderful friends when I moved here and got to know them and after everything they stuck by me. Georgia (go figure right) is my best friend and greatest confidant. Dan is my co-worker and he covers for me at work since my boss has no clue nor do any of my co-workers. Rick is my neighbor and he is really fun to be around, a great friend and someone great to talk to.
I sighed as I moved around my house in the quiet afternoon, my music blaring as I danced, did the dishes and tripped over every toy that my children left on the floor. I heard a growl from the front of the house and stopped everything I was doing. I moved towards the front door where I heard Molly growl once again. I placed my hand on her back as she moved me towards the back door. I grabbed my knife off of the entertainment center as I heard the door open. I held my knife up and heard a gasp.
"Mara, Mara it's Georgia, what the hell." I heard her heartbeat as it moved at lightning speed. I put my knife down and took a deep breath.
God Dammit Georgia how many times do I have to tell you not to sneak up on me like that. You know Molly can hear you, she scared the hell out of me. What's up, why the secrecy. Normally you call me first."
She closed the door and moved into the house. I moved out of her way and followed the sound of her footsteps on the hardwood floor. "I'm sorry, I just, I have so much on my mind lately and I worry about you. Are you sure you won't move back in you know me and Jack wouldn't mind one bit. You being on your own scares me, and that neighbor of yours scares me as well. I don't know him too well and he is always here. I don't know what to think about it."
I sighed and moved into the kitchen, felt along it for my drink and then jumped up on the counter. "Georgia, don't worry, he does the yard, he let's me go riding, and he helps me when I need some help around the house. How bad can he be, he is a volunteer fire fighter for goodness sakes."
I heard Georgia as she started to tap her nails on the counter. "I just worry about you. You are so bent on your independece that you don't understand how worried everyone is. You are luckly that your boss hasn't figured you out yet. What do you think he is going to say when he finds out that you are blind Mara? You will lose your job."
I laughed. "You know he never even knew the difference. He never knew about the surgury either. How do you think he is going to react when he finds out that his favorite Camera Operator is blind. It is going to look pretty good that I didn't lose my touch at work even after I lost my sight. I wouldn't mind being shadowed either, if they feel that is the way to see I am actually doing my work. Can't you see Georgia, I am the only one of my kind and I won't be subdued just because someone doesn't like the fact that I am blind. Why can't you understand that I want my independence. You and Jack are wonderful to me and I thank you so much, but I have to do this. I really really have to do this Georgia."
I heard a sigh from my side and laughed. "You know sometimes you can be so stubborn. I understand though, you were so good with your life before and you don't want to lose it. What can I say you are my best friend and I worry."
I patted her arm as that was all I could find. "I know you worry, but you have to let me do this. I love you girl, are you still able to watch the kids tonight? Dan and I have to pull an over night tonight and they love you so much. I promise Tori and Teagan won't be a problem."
Her laugh filled up the empty space. "Why do you think I am here? I came early so I could bake some cookies for them. I figured some cookies, juice and a lot of running around would do them some good. Are you taking Molly with you tonight?"
I nodded. "Dan and I are going to drop back by and pick her up. That way I will be able to give the kiddos a good night kiss. I am so sorry, if I trusted anyone else to do this I would find someone else. I know that it takes time away from you and jack this whole twice a month nights thing and I couldn't be more sorry."
She laughed again. "Jack understands and he knows that it is hard for you. If it would ease your worry then I could have Lotty come over and watch them for a a couple months. You know she is in town for a while and she wouldn't mind one bit."
I nodded. "That might be a great idea, get you home more. I know this over night thing must be killing you. If you think she would go for it then let's do it."
I heard her start to move around the kitchen and I hugged her before I moved towards my bedroom and started to get ready for my arduous day at work.
