Danielle Madison—

With a little twist

Chapter One

A Bad Start

DANIELLE MADISON’S ALARM rang, at three o’clock in the morning, which, in Danielle’s terms, was not a good start to a day. She slammed down her hand on the snooze button. Ten minutes later, her alarm began ringing again.

The morning proceeded in that way until it was five o’clock, when her parents came in screaming, “What are you doing?! Do you want to wake up the whole neighborhood?!”

Danielle shook her head and yawned, “Mwwy Afarm clock.”

Her mother slammed her hand down on the tiny, pink alarm clock and switched it off violently. Her hair looked like Franken Stein’s Brides’ frizzy mane. There were dark circles under her eyes as well as her dad’s and her.

“It wasn’t my fault!” Danielle protested with a yawn, “I bet you that Emerald or Tiffany did it!”

“I doubt that Emerald did it. You know that she’s sixteen and very responsible. As for Tiffany, I have less doubt.” Her dad said with uncertainty, with a quick glance at Danielle’s mother, “Although you shouldn’t go and blame things on your six-year-old sister!”

Danielle started squirming under her covers as she stared into her parents faces above her, “It wasn’t my fault!” “Just go to bed,” her father said with a sigh, and her parents got up and left the room. Meanwhile, Emerald sat giggling in her room quietly. She calmed herself down after a few minutes and went to sleep.

At six o’clock the house was filled with ringing alarm clocks, which everyone turned off and jumped out of bed. Emerald got dressed, went downstairs, and had breakfast, in the usual routine. Tiffany had a little trouble at the bathroom, because Danielle had scooted the step-stool aside the night before. Danielle was a little confused, because she had almost gotten no sleep the night before. She had breakfast, got dressed, and then brushed her teeth and hair.

The next thing that went wrong that day was that the bus came early. Danielle was half-way into brushing her teeth, Tiffany and Emerald, luckily, were by the door, ready, and their parents were still taking showers. Danielle dropped her toothbrush in the sink, spit, and raced downstairs with her shoes in her hand and one strap of her backpack clinging to her shoulder. She leaped onto the bus with Emerald and Tiffany at the last moment. Tons of people were crowded around Emerald, as usual.
