Chapter 3: A new man
The Door slowly creaked open as the darkness spilled outside into the sunny daylight. It took a moment for the man to adjust his vision to the darkness. Then like a bolt of lightning the lights blasted on followed by an ear piercing welcoming of people jumping up and throwing coloured strips of paper. Tom Burns was home and Janet dove at him from across the lounge room. “Welcome home John.” The tears could no longer hold as they slowly painted the cheeks of her face. He admired the house as he turned to her. “A nice change from my old home, I think I’m going to like it here.” He winked at Janet as he was attacked from behind from his son. John laughed as he threw his son into the air and caught him close to the ground. “Are you better now daddy?” The son looked concerned and Tom brushed his hand through the kid’s hair and replied “Yes Phillip! Daddy is all better now.” A smile arose from Toms face and suddenly his life was back the way he always dreamed.
Nightfall brought about the disappearance of all the guests leaving The Burns family alone to discuss the difficult few days ahead. “Your mother was very supportive while you were gone.” Janet smiled as her hand fell upon Tom’s shoulder. Tom grinned “She always had even after dad died.” Phillip was announced dead around the time Tom was a child. Although Tom never really missed his father, besides their own family was together again now they could live like a normal suburban family. That was the dream and Tom was willing to do whatever it would take to achieve his dream of being a better father then his own who he thought abandoned him as a child.
