 Chapter 1: forest
I remember the day we met, the last day of my human life.
I was walking home from Darkland high I was staring at my feet as I walked, I was freezing, the snow hadn’t let up and it was approaching March; I walked thinking about my trig. Test I hoped I had passed it I probably hadn’t, I sucked at that sort of thing. That was when I noticed it, the movement in the tree; I was walking passed a great big, old, oak-tree, it was one of those that had been planted along the outside of the fir tree forest; something black was moving in it.
“Move along, you didn’t see anything in the tree it was just a breeze blowing through the forest” the voice was a whisper but it was in my mind not my ears. “Go, now!” this time the whisper sounded frustrated.
“What the hell…” I said aloud.
“Who are you?” the voice came from below the tree, it was the same as in my head but in a normal tone and not in my head.
“Who are you?” I replied, my heart racing.
“That is not important” it was in my head again “who are you?”
“I'm leaving, I don’t know who you are or what the hell is with the voice in my-“ someone grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards the trees “let me go!”
“Not until you tell me who you are” my captor said, I decided to look at him, he was still pulling me along by my wrist, he was possibly the most gorgeous guy I had ever seen, he was tall, had dark-as-night hair, blueish grey eyes, he was about 20 maybe 21 and was wearing a frown that could kill puppies.
“I'm not telling you anything!” I was getting more and more scared as he led me deeper into the forest “Not if you don’t tell me, at least, what your name is” I said, still trying to pull away from his strong, freezing cold, grasp.
“How do you do that? Resist me, how do you do it?” he didn’t look at me as he spoke, or at all for that matter.
1
“How do I resist some creep pulling me into the dark part of the forest, quite easily really” I said with sarcasm in my voice. Now. Let. Me. GO!” I tried with all my might to break free of his icy grasp.
“Are you trying to temp me in to killing you?” he said sarcastically, I hoped “you smell like dinner and you’ll put up a fight if I should try…” he broke off at the end and was still leading me into the forest it was getting darker by the second.
“Try to do what?” I said, even though I was pretty sure he was talking about killing me.
“Please tell me your name, human” he groaned, he had stopped in a tiny clearing and you could just see dusk beyond the branches and had pinned her to a tree with his hands on either side of her and his face so close that I could feel his breath on my skin. “My name is Eric” Eric reached one of his hands and brushed a lock of hair from my face “Are you human?”
“What the hell sort of a question is that!” I said struggling to take my eyes away from his.
“I asked you a question now, answer!” he said raising his voice at the last word.
“m-my name is Sophie-Anne Greyton, a-a-and yes I'm h-h-human” I stuttered slightly “What do you want with me?” the panic finally caught up with me as I spoke.
“I want to know why you can hear me but not obey me” he said simply “doesn’t this make you want to do what I say?” this time it was in my head
“No” I said, my voice was breaking, showing my fear. “What do you want with me?” tried to duck out of his hands as I spoke, but he caught me by the shoulder and stopped me from moving.
“I just want to know how you can resist me” Eric said.

2
“Please let me go, I’ll do anything, please” I said my voice pitching with fear now.
Eric dropped both his hands and turned away “go ahead, run, you won’t find your way out of here alive…but I’ll help you…if you do three things for me…one allow me to show you my true nature, two tell me who…what you are, and three don’t fear me.
I gasped for air and realized that he was right I wouldn’t find my way out of here “what is your true nature…murderer? Rapist?”
“No! I'm not such a cruel person as to rape young women…ever” Eric said, I bowed my head and a sob escaped my lips. “Why do you cry? I won’t hurt you” Eric placed his fingers on my chin and lifted my head up.
“So…you’re a murderer…” I said as i tried to stop the tears from trickling down my face.
He was silent for a moment the he said “of sorts yes, but as I said before I will not hurt you” he stroked away a tear and frowned at it on his thumb “I do not understand your tears, now please do not scream when I show you what I am, ok?”
“I won’t” I whispered as i whipped the tears from my eyes
“Thank you, Sophia” Eric said, with testing eyes.
“How did you…” I started to say, watching Eric all the time, but stopped dead when he disappeared from my view then reappeared next to a tree across the clearing.
“I'm impossibly fast and strong” he said and, as if to prove his point, pulled the tree up from the ground with one hand.
“Oh my god!” I said, my eyes widening. Eric disappeared again and reappeared in front of my face again.
“You have watched television programs on my kind and movies which make my kind seem like monsters!” he said, he seemed angry, really angry.
“What…you’re a…” I stuttered.
“Vampire, yes” he said “V-a-m-p-i-r-e” he spelled it out.
3
“That’s not…you’re not joking are you? You really are…” I said, sliding down the rough bark of the tree until li was sat on the cold snow covered ground.
“No I am not joking, yes I am a vampire” Eric crouched at my side as he said the words. “Are you afraid?”
“No, I'm not afraid” I said and it was true.
“That in its self is a surprise” Eric was pacing but at about the same pace that I would go if I was running.
“Why do you want me to fear you?” I asked not moving from my position.
“I don’t want it, it’s just not normal, if one of my kinds shows a human what they are, which is usually before they feed from them, the human fears that creature or if we don’t show our selves humans can’t resist us they want us, and we can influence humans easily so they do what we want anyway” Eric replied.
“So I'm not normal?” I said, taking a step away from the tree.
Eric began to chuckle. “So let me get this straight, you’re in the middle of the forest with a hungry vampire and you worried that you’re not normal?” he started to laugh as he finished speaking.
“Please help me out of here…i-i-I don’t want to die” I stuttered, I looked around me; it was getting close to dark. “i-I’ll do a-anything, p-p-please”
“You fear that I will not release you from here, do you not?” he asked me with those.
“I know you won’t, I'm going to die in here, you’re going to kill me” I said but it was barely a whisper.
“No you are not, i swear it” Eric said, still crouched at my side.
“Well, I don’t think I'm going to live, I'm freezing cold, my butt is soaked from the snow and I'm all alone in a forest with a murderous vampire” I said. “Let’s face facts, I'm dead”
4
“Stop this instant! I am not going to kill you, you silly little human!” he ordered, he was well and truly angry now “when will you understand? I am in agony because I am choosing not to kill you! It goes against every instinct in my body!”
My breath left my body for a mili-second and it felt as if my heart had stopped, he must have detected this because all of a sudden his perfect features morphed to make his face look almost concerned.
“K-k-kill me!” I screamed, half begging “please! I c-c-can’t do th-th-this! Kill me! Kill me! Kill me!” I was crying uncontrollably.
“No” he said just that one word with such calmness.
“Please! I can’t take this!” I said, I was shaking uncontrollably with a mixture of cold and fear.
“Why would a human so young with for death? You’re no more than 17, a child still” he was still calm, though I couldn’t see his face clearly through my tears.
“B-b-because I have just learnt that v-v-vampires exist and I can’t…” I broke off at the end. Why did I want to die? I had no reasons.
“Exactly you do not wish for death” he said, he was beside me again.
“But I-I-I’m probably going to die in here” I said trying to calm down “even if death not the cause of that d-d-death”
He looked stunned “do you not fear death?”
“I-I used t-t-to, b-but n-n-now it seems l-l-like th-th-that that is w-w-what's going t-to happen t-t-to m-m-e” I stuttered, and it wasn’t through fear I was freezing. Darkness had enclosed the forest now and it had taken the temperature down by a few degrees.
“You are cold, human” he noted “here” he took of his jacket and handed me it.
I took it but hesitated for a moment.
“Put it on, or you’ll die a very cold and painful death” Eric ordered.
I shrugged out of my bag and slipped my arms through the sleeves, that was when I noticed the smell, it smelt divine like sweet grass but nicer still.
5
“Not a problem” he replied, then I felt his hand under my elbow, he pulled me off of the ground but my legs were so cold that I couldn’t feel them and they collapsed from under me.
I gasped and reached my hands out to break my fall but they never touched the ground…
His arms had caught me, and he looked concerned for me.
“Sophie?” he said quietly.
“y-y-yes” I stuttered, I couldn’t keep my eyes open, it wasn’t that I was tired it was just that my eye lids felt heavy.
“Keep your eyes open, don’t lose conciseness … for your mothers’ sake” he said slowly “I’m going to help you live if you’ll allow me to, ok?”
“o-o-ok” I tried with all my might to do as he said, he mumbled something like ‘this is all my fault, I have to save her’
“Talk to me, I do not care what about… try your family” he said, and his voice was laced with a mixture of emotions concern, panic, frustration and something else but I couldn’t pin-point it.
“W-w-why?” I asked.
“Because you need to be distracted so that you stay awake” he replied, then suddenly he picked me up in his arms so that I had my head resting against his perfectly smooth chest.
“o-o-ok, uh…I have a little t-t-twirpy brother c-c-called p-p-peter” I slurred it slightly but it sort of made enough sense that he understood me, but in a swift movement we were moving at in-human speeds
“Wow, why do you call him twirpy?” he asked, we might as well have been flying because I felt no movement and the only thing that gave it away was the wind blowing in my face.
“B-b-because he a-a-annoys th-th-the hell o-outta me” I responded
He laughed but it sounded fake “tell me about your childhood” I told him about it even though most of it was slurred and stuttered after about 10 minutes of running my eyes were beginning to win over my will to keep them open, he saw this.
6
“Keep your eyes open!” he commanded, and I tried to obey but it was so hard.
“I-I-I can't” I said, fighting with all I had left to keep them open.
“Please, don’t do this to me” he said and I was pretty sure hadn’t meant for me to hear the last part.
I had the sudden urge to comfort him, to say I was sorry “I’m s-s-sorry”
“No! Don’t apologize! You have to fight! For…for me” he said, and then something red dripped onto my hand which was resting on my chest, below his face…
Blood, I looked at his face even though it was hard because my eyes kept shutting though I forced them open, the blood had come from his eye he had a tear mark down his face but it was red, he was crying blood.
That was it, my last bit of energy died, my eyes closed, my heart raced in my ears.
“NO!” he cried, and that was the last thing I heard.
