The World Comes Crashing

Chapter 6

Michael’s legs have never felt so heavy in his entire life. Derek, Kelly and him had been walking block by block in a consistent silence Michael could only describe as just awkward. He dragged on behind Derek and Kelly pondering the outcome of their stroll down the sunny streets of Bronx, New York. His mind had wandered into the furthest depths imaginable, like usual. Questions flying in and out, where are they going, why, and for what? Michael could never just let things happen. He always had to think, to question, to wonder. He had been like that since he could remember. With his head hanging low and mind far off in thought Michael almost bumped into his companions who had stopped and stood looking ahead.

“What’s up?” Michael tapped Derek on the shoulder.

“We’re here…” Kelly said motionless.

Michael looked ahead to see what they were looking at. To his surprise, he recognized the place. His grandmother had come here a couple years back. Michael’s mouth opened but no words seemed to escape his lips. He wanted to say something, anything to break this silence hanging over them.

He looked at a sign near him and read aloud, “Saint Paul’s Cemetery.”

“Yep…” Derek looked at him, “Let’s go.”

The three walked past the graves as Michael asked again and again why they were there. Kelly turned around and put her finger to his lips and shh’d him. She then knelt by a grave and Derek put his hand on her shoulder. Michael looked at the tombstone engraved elegantly saying “Walter Malacaster, loving father, grandfather, friend and person, 1935-1998.”

Michael’s heart instantly dropped. How could he have been so cluelessly stupid? The signs were clearly evident and yet he simply crossed over them so blindly. Looking back he could see it perfectly. How ignorant, how dumb, how blind, how idiotic he was overlook this. “Kelly…” He paused, “Is your last name Malacaster?”

She nodded without looking at him. Michael felt horrible he had not figured out the situation sooner.

“What happened?” Michael asked. Derek sat down next to Kelly so Michael walked up and sat down as well.

Kelly sobbed and clenched the grass, “Fuckin’ drunk driver…”

Sympathy filled Michael’s heart. He would have never thought of Kelly in such a light. So damaged, so hurt, and so broken.

“Baby, he got life, he won’t ever hurt anyone again. He will pay for his mistake.” Derek says as he throws his arm around her.

“…Yeah” Michaels agrees,”And hey he will probably burn in hell for eternity after so…”

Kelly looks up at him, “You…You really think so?”

“Oh yeah” Michael grins at her, “Lake of fire, Satan, Hitler, demons, all that stuff.”

Derek laughs and says sarcastically, “Wow…You really do have a way with words Michael.”

Kelly giggles a little and wipes her eyes.

“Well what do you expect?” Michael nudges Derek.

Derek pushes back and they start wrestling around on the ground.

“Are you guys in fourth grade?” Kelly rolls her eyes and laughs.

The two stop a moment and look at each other and then at Kelly and say in unison, “…Yep.”

Derek and Michael roll around a little more until Derek pins him to the ground.

“1 ,2 ,3!” Derek counts.

“Alright, alright let’s go Hulk Hogan.” Kelly stands up and starts walking off.

Derek gets up and holds his hand out to Michael to help him up and the two try to catch up to Kelly.

Had they just made a situation like that happy, Michael thought. Then he realized something slightly saddening, out of everyone in the entire world he only had two friends, well two people he could actually call friends. Derek and Kelly were really all he had and then he noticed something else. Something he had not noticed until just then as he said those things in his head. He considered Kelly his friend. Derek rushes up to Kelly and grabs her hand and Michael rushed up next to him.

“So where we goin’ now?” Michael asks aloud.

“Movie?” Derek looks at Kelly.

“I don’t have any cash.” Kelly reaches into her pocket and pulls them inside out.

“Me neither man.” Michael says.

“Well damn…”Derek flips his hair

Silence set in as the three thought to themselves. Michael then had a wave of emotions hit him but this time they weren’t sad. He felt like he was going to burst unless he spoke his mind.

Every second taunted him into breaking the silence until he says shyly, “Guys…”

“Yeah?” Derek says as he and Kelly stare into Michael’s eyes.

A couple seconds past and Michael’s jaw seemed wired shut. Words piled up behind his teeth begging to break free.

“Umm…” He began, “I just wanted you guys to know that you’re really good friends. Like honestly, at first I wasn’t really into the whole dating thing with you two but now I kinda think I wouldn’t have it any other way. So I guess what I’m tryin’ to say here is just thanks. I don’t have many friends at all as you know Derek but I’ll have you guys know I’ve got two great best friends.”

Michael ends his little speech with a grin. He was amazed at how relieved and free he felt. He felt happy and proud and so many great emotions and now he was eager to hear what they would say back.

“Awe Michael” Kelly hugs him and holds on, “Your welcome”

“Yeah man, it’s no problem” Derek joins in the hug, “Bros for life”

“Defiantly” Michael smiles and the hug breaks, “Here’s an idea, it’s getting a little late. How bout we go on back to my place, pop in a movie and just chill? Sound good?”

Derek looks at Kelly, “I’m in…you?”

“Hell yeah.” Kelly pulls Derek’s hand.

The three walk all the way back to Michael’s apartment and for the first time in a long while, Michael actually looked forward to going home. As the summer night went on laughs were shared and friends became like family. They stayed up late watching movie after movie joking and laughing. Happiness illuminated Michael's dark room. Later that night Derek and Kelly fell asleep on Michael’s floor and Michael, on his bed. One day down and Michael knew he now could finally look forward to the next.
