Chapter One: New house, new school, new life.

The warm summer breeze whipped through my long wavy, dark brown hair as I stood at the front gate. I gazed upon the little house in all its humble beauty, from the peeling white paint on the window sills and the door to the pretty little flowers that spilled over the pathway untamed, like no one had lived in the house for years. Realizing we had finally made it out of the depressing mess we had previously called a life I sighed and breathed in the salty air. This was our new life.

I felt my mum wrap her arm around my waist and hug me tightly to her side. I looked up at her face and noticed she was smiling. It had been a while since I last saw her smile and it made me even happier to know she was finally happy. Yes it was going to be hard fitting into the new school there, especially starting my senior year and yes I was going to miss my friends back home. But I was absolutely positive that this was going to be the start of something great.

The inside of our new house was even prettier as I took in the little details from the intricate mouldings on the ceiling to the dark wooden floorboards, faded in some areas but hey, it adds character right? The house only had three small rooms and after I had shot-gunned the room with a large window that let the afternoon sun stream through the lace curtains, my mum had claimed the other two rooms, one to sleep in and the other her studio otherwise known as her ‘office’. My mum was somewhat of an artist and sold paintings as well as pottery on commission. She was very talented and I had somehow inherited my mother’s creative genes however I was more interested in photography and drawing. Besides her art, my mum had to get a ‘real’ job to cover living expenses. So after only a couple of weeks living in the new town she had scored a job at a café on the boardwalk down near the beach.

As for me, I was anxiously awaiting the first day of school. There was only one week left of summer and I was way too nervous to enjoy it properly, even if I did have friends to share it with, which I didn’t. I had been spending my days down at the beach which was very close or at home drawing under the big oak tree in the backyard.

And then suddenly it was Monday morning.

I got up earlier than usual mainly because I had already woken up hours ago, not being able to get back to sleep, my mind reeling. I took a shower then got dressed into the uniform I was required to wear. It was a blue and grey tartan skirt that ended mid-thigh and a white blouse with a matching blue tie. I pulled on the knee high socks and slipped on black leather shoes. The uniform wasn’t spectacular but it was tolerable. The uniform I had to wear back home was horrible.

I dried my hair and let the natural wavy locks fall down my back. I placed a white lacy headband in my hair before beginning on my make-up. I wanted to actually try today. I didn’t want to be the new girl that everyone avoids. I wanted to be the new girl that everyone wanted to be friends with. So sue me for making an effort.

After I was ready I still had a whole hour before school started. I made my way into the kitchen. The house was completely silent and my mum wouldn’t be up until I had to leave so she could wish me luck. She liked her sleep way too much. I grabbed an apple and took a bite while I grabbed a bottle of water and took them outside where the sun was already shining bright. I knew this perfect weather wouldn’t last forever so I liked to soak it in while I still had the chance. I walked down to the beach while sipping my water and sat on the warm sand. Back home we lived near the beach and it was often my escape during my parent’s fights. But I won’t go into that now. Maybe I’ll tell you more about it later on.

I looked at my phone, not surprized to see that I had no messages and saw that it was getting late. I stood up and brushed the sand from my skirt and made my way back home.

My mum was up when I arrived home and she smiled at me as I walked in the door.

“All ready Hayley?” She asked me then sipped her coffee.

“I think so.” I replied.

“That’s good. Now you better get going. You don’t want to be late on your first day.” She said with a smile and looked back down at her magazine through her black rimmed glasses. I went to my room to get my bag. I kissed my mum on the cheek on my way out.

“Good luck honey!” She called as I left the house. I took in a deep breath and got in my little beat up blue car. It wasn’t the best looking car in the world but it did its job.

The parking lot was almost full when I arrived. I found an empty space and parked. I looked at myself in the rear-vision mirror and took a deep breath.

“You’re going to be fine. Just fine.” I assured myself while still looking into the mirror then gathered my things and exited the safety of my car.

The red bricked building stood smack bang in the middle of a green field with tall oak tree’s standing around in all their glory. Students were gathered under each one chattering away, too busy catching up on gossip from the summer to notice a new comer such as myself. I walked across the perfectly maintained grass and entered the school through two big doors. The hall ways were practically empty as everyone was soaking in the sun outside before class where they would be cooped up inside for the rest of the day.

After I had handed my paper work into the women at the office I went out to find my locker. Following the directions the woman behind the desk in the office had given me I found it easily enough. My next challenge was to figure out a way of opening the damn thing. I twisted the knob, entering my code but the door wouldn’t budge. I tried banging the metal door but that didn’t help, not that I expected it to.

“You’ve got to wiggle the latch a little.” I heard a male voice say from behind me. I turned around to see who it was and found a tall guy with tanned skin and wavy dark brown hair that gave me the impression he had just rolled out of bed. It looked cute all dishevelled in that way though, I must admit. His lips were turned up in a kind of half smirk and his eyes looked mischievous the way they glinted in the fluorescent light. I smiled at him and tried what he had suggested, wiggling the latch as I put in the digits. It still failed to open for me.

“Still not working!” I said and turned back to him feeling defeated. He chuckled slightly.

“Here, let me try.” He said. I passed him the slip of paper with the digits on it that was supposed to open my locker for me. He twisted the knob then wiggled the latch and with a little tug the door swung open, coming towards my face. I tried blocking it with my arm but I was too slow. The metal door came into contact with my face sending me back a few steps in shock. What a great way to start the day, locker door to the face.

“Oh shit! Sorry!” said the guy that had opened it and put his hands on my arms, looking at my face to see if I was okay.

“I’m okay.” I said waving him off, my eyes only watering a little from the impact to my nose.

“You sure?” He replied I nodded and mustered up a smile.

“I’m fine. Really. Thanks for the locker anyway.” I said to him.

“No worries. I’m Ryan by the way.” He said with a lop sided smile.

“I’m Hayley.” I replied and smiled back.

“You’re new right? I haven’t seen you around before.” He said.

“Yep.” I said, popping the ‘p’.

“Cool. I might see you round then Hayley.”

“Yeah, we’ll see.” I said with a slight smile and slung my bag over my shoulder.

“Later.” He said and waved as he went his own way. I waved back like an idiot.
