Chapter Twelve

“So how did your date go?” Luke asked Carol cheerfully Tuesday morning.

“What date?” Carol asked.

“The one that Mark guy asked you to go to,” he explained.

I looked for changes at Carol’s face, her jaw just clenched a bit.

“I told him no, Luke,” she said curtly.

Luke nodded and grinned as a girl entered the bookstore. “How can we help you?” he asked her cheerfully.

The girl smiled timidly back at him. She was pretty, in her early twenties or maybe late teens, brown haired and gorgeous green eyes. She kind of reminded me of me in the way she stood and stared around the room, just older and way prettier.

“Why did you tell no to Mark?” I asked Carol when the girl and Luke had left. Luke promising she was about to taste the best coffee ever, Starbucks was nothing compared to him.

“There’s history way too messy in there Avery, let’s just say I don’t want to go through all that again,” she shrugged. “It took me three years to get over what happened.”

I patted her hand, not really knowing what to say and being insanely curious as into what happened. “Well, if he hurt you that much it’s okay you rejected him.”

She sighed. “Probably.”

“And if you want to talk about it, I’m here,” I told her.

She half-smiled at me. “I know Avery. Now please go and attend that poor girl before Luke freaks her out.”

I laughed. “I have a feeling she’s okay,” I said just as a laugh came off the coffee area and it wasn’t Luke’s.

“Is a girl laughing with Luke?” Logan called a couple of aisles down.

I giggled and Carol laughed.

“As impossible as that may sound there is,” Carol called.

“You’re mean Carol,” I told her.

She grinned at me.

Hello kid. How are you? What’s new with Rowan and your boyfriend? Caleb says he looks like a nice guy and that he’s crazy for you, he even said to me ‘Poor sucker he’s head over heels for our Avery’. Is that so honey? And New York has been hectic, I’m telling you I’d barely had time for my coffee, customers still attacking me with their crazy demands. It is nuts, but I’m sure you don’t want to hear all those boring details so I’m fine, with work to my neck, but managing. Now you tell me about your summer.

Love, Dad.

I grinned at the e-mail. Gosh he was so eager for details it was nuts. Usually dads wanted to know as little as possible from their daughter’s relationship and strangle the poor guy. But of course not mine.

Hello Dad (: I’m awesome. Rowan? Well Rowan is a nutcase so there’s not much novelty in there. My boyfriend’s name is Logan, just FYI. He said that? Damn let me go and hit him and I’ll be right back to the e-mail. ‘Kay? I won’t, but is that bad? I mean the guy likes me, respects me and does an awesome boyfriend job, how can that be bad? I’m sad to hear that, but remember to take a break once in a while; it’s not healthy to be under so much stress. There’s nothing more to tell so take care and remember that I love you :D

I typed and pressed send. I missed him so much at times. His lazy smile by the mornings and wise advice.

I sighed. Well I’ll see him soon, I hoped.

“Avery!” Mom called. “I’m going out, you coming?”

“No, go on without me,” I called back, turning off the laptop and grabbing the book to my left.

Time to get lost in Two-way Street.

“Avery Watson you are going to tell me about that party,” Rowan said planting herself in my door.

I sighed.

Logan had accepted that I wasn’t telling him the whole story, but Rowan was a different story, she wanted to know and I wasn’t up for explaining.

“Come in,” I told her moving out of the way as she made her way inside.

“You have to talk about it Avery,” she told me seriously.

I shook my head. “No I don’t.”

She groaned. “You are so impossible Avery. I talked to some people, apparently you and Becca got in a fight.”

I sighed. I wouldn’t call it that since I didn’t really fight back, but whatever.

“Was it that Avery?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest as I sighed.

“Yes she did fight me and maybe even throw some beer to my dress,” I shrugged.

“That fucking jealous bitch!” she exclaimed. “Who does she thinks she is? I’m so going to show her you don’t mess up with my best friend!”

I pinched the bridge of my nose. “It isn’t necessary Ro.”

“Babe we so need to make her pay. Who does she think she is to tell you off? Clearly she’s trashy and a bitch so I see no reason not to…”

I shook my head at her. “I won’t step down to her level Ro, okay?”

She frowned. “That is no fun whatsoever.”

I shrugged. “I’m not stepping down to her level,” I repeated, just to make myself clear.
