Chapter Fifteen

“I can’t believe that bitch,” Rowan said as I removed the little bit of make-up I dared to use.

I sighed. “Let’s not talk about her, shall we?”

“It’s just that… ugh. Good thing Logan put her right back where she belongs.”

I half-smiled. “He did.”

“Of course he did, he’s like head over heels for you Avery. I would even dare to say he’s in love with you.”

I shook my head. “I don’t think he is in love with me,” I told her. I did believe he liked me, a lot, but love me? Not quite yet.

She rolled her eyes. “Believe what you want babe, but we just got ourselves a story to tell our daughters.”

I laughed. “I won’t tell me daughters about this, what kind of mother would I be?”

“A like ultrafreakingshly cool mother?” Rowan said, again with her ‘duh’ voice.

I laughed again.

*

“So tell me if I were to read a young adult girl book, which one would you recommend?” Logan asked, as he had stated “hypothetically” fidgeting with a book, putting back into place and getting it out.

I thought about it. “It depends on what you’re looking for. Insight into the complicated workings of female mind or all the details about a dude’s muscles, or a book of how the girl overcomes all her insecurities having the guy playing a huge role in that?”

His eyes narrowed and he stopped playing around with the book. “That’s about what you read?”

I nodded. “Yeah, though there’s a huge variety out there, so it’s just a general outlook. Some books mix the three of them.”

He frowned. “Wow, just wow.”

I laughed. “Is it that impressive?”

He nodded. “Yup.”

“So which one do you want to read?” I asked him, truth is I was getting a kick out of this.

“I think the last one,” he finally said.

“Sarah Dessen is what you are looking for,” I told him. “Her books rock the world.”

He nodded. “Hmmh, really? If I said I wanted all the gory details which one would you have recommended?”

“Swoon,” I told him.

He laughed. “I know I’m swoon worthy.”

I rolled my eyes and shoved his chest playfully. “You dream Logan.”

He took my hand and pushed me into him, kissing my lips, then my jawline, sending shivers down my spine. “Tell me this is not making you swoon.”

I swallowed. “It’s not.”

“Liar,” he growled, crashing his lips into mine in a playful kiss.

I giggled and pushed him away with great difficulty. “Sorry to burst your bubble Mr. I Think I’m So Hot Girls Line Up Just For A Shot To See Me, but you do not make me Avery Cassandra Watson swoon,” I knew I was totally lying, but I just liked to tease him.

“Hmmh… so I do not make you swoon?” he asked.

I nodded. “No, you don’t.”

He smirked. “Well, but I do sweep you off your feet,” he said and he did not mean it metaphorically, but quite literally since he did pick me up bride style and kissed my cheek, and then my neck as I giggled, content on how his arms wrapped around my body.

“Set me down Logan Trainor!” I screeched at him. “If you don’t I’m going to bite you,” I threatened.

He laughed. “I want to see you try.”

He didn’t believe me? How dare he? He got distracted with my neck and I took the chance to bite down and hard on his ear.

He recoiled back and let me drop delicately. “You didn’t!” he exclaimed, taking his hand to his ear.

I smirked. “I did.”

His eyes narrowed and his jaw dropped. “You are a savage Avery Watson.”

I laughed, throwing back my head as he charged against me, resulting on both of us in the floor. He was on top of me his hands serving as handcuffs for my own and his legs between my hips. God, he was heavy.

I glared at him. “Get off me Logan.”

He shook his head and leaned down to kiss me in the lips. I couldn’t believe we were in this position in the bookstore, in the middle of a hall where anyone could see us. It was so unlike me.

“Someone could enter the store right this second and see us like this, what do you think they are going to think?” I asked him.

He seemed to think about it for a second and laughed, still holding me into place when I heard another laugh that didn’t belong to him.

“Okay you two love birds get a room,” Rowan grinned.

I glared at her. “Tell the monster to get off me!”

Logan scoffed. “Monster? I beg your pardon miss, but I am not a monster. A monster would do this,” he said and bit down my neck, surely leaving a hickey.

Rowan laughed, amused.

“And I am not a monster,” he said, smirking.

I glared at him. “Get off me Logan.”

He smiled at me and I smiled back, I just couldn’t help it. He kissed me once in the lips and got off me, falling to the floor laughing his guts out.

I shoved him, half-playful, half-mad and stuck my tongue out at him, turning to Rowan.

“I came here to see if you could go out for lunch, but I see you’re busy,” she smirked.

I rolled my eyes. “Of course I’m available and maybe single too.”

Logan stared at me. “Don’t get mad Ave,” he said, placing his hand in the base of my neck and pushing my face to his kissing me passionately in the lips.

No way in this world I was giving up those lips.

Rowan coughed and Logan let go off me, winking as he stood up gracefully extending his hand to help me, which I took and up I was.

“You girls have fun,” he told us.

“I really doubt she’ll have more fun with me than she was having with you,” Rowan told him, mischievously.

I blushed furiously. “Let’s just go Ro,” I told her and stuck my tongue out at Logan, linking arms with Rowan and leaving Logan to himself.

As soon as we were out the door Rowan laughed. “I swear I thought you two were seriously getting at it.”

I glared at her. “We were not getting at it Rowan, you perv.”

She laughed. “It sure seemed like it Avery. I mean what if it had been your mother?” as soon as she finished she laughed again, probably too amused by the prospect of my mom walking in on us making out or something.

I shuddered. “You sure are a perv.”

“So Subway?” she asked hopefully.

I shook my head. “Noup, we’re going to The Restaurant.”

She grimaced. “Fine.”

*

The Restaurant was in its usual buzz, people in tables, crowded as ever as the service struggled to get all the tables.

“See this is why I don’t like to come,” Rowan told me.

I rolled my eyes. “Please Ro, don’t be a drama queen.”

“Hello my name is Giovanna, how can I help you?”

My eyes almost bulge out of their sockets as I saw in fact my cousin in the red shirt and black jeans of The Restaurant, not only that but her hair was tied up in a ponytail and she was holding something that wasn’t her purse.

“Giovanna?” I asked her as Rowan too stared at her totally and completely awestruck.

She looked up and half-smiled. “Avery hello. Ugh, can you please tell me fast what you want because I have like five tables to attend and my feet are freaking killing me. Who would have thought working would be so hard?” she whined.

I didn’t know if I was glad to see that Giovanna was trying or freaked out by it, but well she was still whiny.

“Sure we want two Sprites please,” Rowan told her. “And I think the uniform suits you,” she said, just to bug her.

Giovanna looked down to her clothes and grimaced. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Anything to being with?”

We both shook our heads.

She nodded and as she retreated into the place Rowan started laughing. “This has to be the funniest day yet!”

I rolled my eyes at her.

“First I see you and Logan in a suspicious position and then I see your spoiled Californian cousin working at a place not involving getting rid of clothes! So fucking hilarious!”

I rolled my eyes again. “I swear to you Rowan if I didn’t love you so much, you’d be in a nasty place right now.”

Somehow that only made her laugh harder, even more so when she saw Giovanna juggling our glasses, in order to keep them from falling. I mean she was wearing heels after all.

It was quite hilarious, and then it turned to sweet when a guy came to her rescue. He was sort of cute and wore the same kind of uniform Giovanna was, so coworkers was it than.

“Hey, bring tennis next time,” he told her with a small smile and a wink of the eye.

Giovanna nodded, with a small roll of her eyes. She might be trying, but she was still Giovanna. I let that thought comfort me as she brought our drinks.

“He has a nice butt,” Rowan told her, looking after the guy.

I slapped her arm. “You have a boyfriend.”

Giovanna set our drinks in the table. “Who Jem?”

“Jem?” Rowan asked.

“Short for Jeremiah,” she shrugged. “You think so?” she asked, looking over her shoulder to stare at poor Jem’s butt. Really if guys just knew they were being judged so severely.

Giovanna turned to us. “I guess so, pretty round. Definitely smack worthy.”

Rowan laughed and high-fived with her as I stared too. What did they mean with smack worthy?

*

“Avery! George is on the phone!” Mom called.

I grinned and ran down the stairs, almost falling flat in my face at a certain moment.

“It’s good to hear George,” Mom told him.

That only made my curiosity trigger, I almost snap the phone and Mom’s hands in the process. She rolled her eyes at me.

“Hello,” I said, trying to catch my breath.

Dad laughed. “Hello kid.”

“So what’s up?” I asked him.

“The roof is what’s up kid,” he teased and I couldn’t help but laugh, soon he had joined me.

I felt the strings at my heart pull. “I miss you Dad.”

“I miss you too Ave,” he said, longingly. “I have a feeling you’ll like my news,” he said sounding perked up by now.

I perked up as well. “What is it? Are you coming for a visit?”

“It would be awesome, but I have a date kiddo.”

I beamed. His last date had been a year ago. “Really? What’s her name?”

“Her name is Helen, she has wavy blonde hair and shocking green eyes. Divinity in motion,” he said the last part like Michael Jackson’s Dangerous.

I laughed. “How did it happen?”

“I was getting my every day black coffee when I notice this woman in front of me talking with a friend with such security, such fervor in her eyes that I just had to ask her out. She was doubtful at first, I could see her in her green eyes and tight smile, but after I talked her into it she gave up into my charming self. I’ve already called her and I’m taking her up to Delmonico’s.”

I kept beaming. “That’s awesome Dad. You must e-mail me or call me with the details, promise?”

“I promise you kid. Is your brother home?” he asked.

“He’s out with friends for the night. It’s just me and Mom tonight since Giovanna got a job and apparently as her training she had to do two shifts.”

He laughed. “Seriously?”

I nodded. “Yeah, up at The Restaurant.”

“Well I’m proud of her and I’m sure Travis will be too. Well I must get back to work now kid, so have some fun and send my greetings to that Logan boy.”

I blushed and toyed with the necklace hanging in my neck. “I’ll pass that along to him. Love you.”

“Love you too kid,” he said and the phone line went dead.

Dad back to the dating business, who would have thought? With that thought in mind I let out a small giggle.

“George back to dating, huh?” Mom smiled leaning on the doorframe.

I nodded. “Dating indeed.”

*

Logan tapped his fingers against the counter, making me totally and completely edgy.

I put my hand over his fingers. “Logan would you calm down, please?” I whispered.

He sighed. “Ben hasn’t called with updates Avery, this could be big. Epic more precisely,” he said, like I didn’t understand.

An hour ago Ben had called him with ‘epic’ news, their coach, apparently not did only play in school but off it again—which might be why I had never noticed Braden as a soccer jock before—and they were having a series of serious game, kind of like a mini tournament or cup or whatever the name is with several clubs and some talent scouts were coming over to the games. Of course I wasn’t a guy or a jock of any sorts so I couldn’t understand what the fuss was all about, but at least I tried.

I rolled my eyes. “Epic would be is Stephen King or Maggie Stiefvater or Sarah Dessen walked through that door right this second Logan. That would be epic.”

He looked at me like I was nuts or something.

I rolled my eyes. “Never mind, I’m going to arrange something,” I told him as his phone rang again.

“Hey Ben, what happened?” he demanded, as I rolled my eyes again going down the aisles.

I could hear his whole conversation, all about where the first game and against who was it. Where and when would they train. Some strategy and a goodbye full of some kind of macho—how weird that word didn’t have a translation—anticipation of some sorts.

“I must call Braden,” Logan told to himself.

Really what was the big deal about soccer games and a mini sort of tournament? If it was the flipping World Cup I might understand, but this nope, I didn’t.

Logan hollered suddenly and I swear I almost jump ten feet into the air. He scared the living shit out of me.

I heard him talking on the phone with Braden for a little before I saw him appear at the end of the hall beaming, it made me beam too.

He laughed and came up to me, picking me up and kissing me unexpectedly. The kiss was long, languid and most of all molding and happy. Like there was too much happiness inside of him ready to burst, like he had to get it out somehow.

He set me down carefully and pressed his forehead to mine, his hands in my waist tracing soft circles as I tried to calm down my breathing.

“God, this is so awesome,” he said.

“I know I’m awesome, but thanks for reminding me,” I teased.

He snickered. “Of course you’re awesome Ave. You are more than that; you are all I could have ever asked for.”

I smiled and closed my eyes. “Thanks,” I whispered. “You are more than I could have ever asked for.”

He gave me a butterfly kiss and Iheard him sigh, totally and completely content. I sighed as well.
