Chapter Eighteen

“I see you are having fun,” Rowan told me, handing over a red cup to me.

“Is this beer Ro?” I asked her looking down at the contents of the cup it sure looked like it.

She shrugged. “You should taste it to know.”

I rolled my eyes, but took a sip anyway. Yup, beer. Reeking thing that one, of course I had to grimace. “It is and it’s disgusting,” I told her handing the cup back at her when I felt someone bump into my shoulder rather harshly.

“Move out of the way bookworm,” Becca sneered at me.

I breathed harshly through my nose. I’d had enough. “Excuse me, but I was not in your way and I know your intellect is pretty limited Becca but I do think you at least know how to dodge people.”

She gaped at me, also staring like she didn’t know who I was at all.

“Way to go babe,” Rowan told me.

“What did you say?” Becca asked, shoving me lightly.

“I think you heard me bitch,” I told her and turned around when she grabbed my shoulder and slapped me.

The bitch! I recoiled back and closed my eyes at the stung of it. She had a freaking heavy hand. This time I wasn’t about to back away, not this time.

I looked up at her and slapped her right back with more force than I knew I possessed.

“You fucking bookworm!” she shrieked at me.

We glared at each other, the only difference was I didn’t have my hand in my cheek when she did.

“What bitch?” I demanded. I was tired of this, of her attitude and Giovanna was right. You had to be a bitch to manage another bitch.

“You. Didn’t,” she snarled.

“Oh. I. Did,” I told her punctuating every single word.

She shrieked and grabbed me by the hair.

I cried out in pain and stomped on her foot as she shrieked again.

“FIGHT! FIGHT!” I heard the crowd call, but I was too busy trying to come free of Becca’s grasp.

I took hold of her hair too and pulled at it as she cried out in pain. “You little slut.”

I laughed cynically. “You are calling me a slut? Do you have a mirror Becca?”

She pulled at my hair again and sneered. “You’ll never be as good as me Avery.” So she had changed strategy, now she was aiming for my self-esteem.

“No, because I am already so much of a person than you are Becca, so I beat you to that one,” I smirked, pulling a little more.

She glared at me and I saw her left hand curl into a fist and rise, when someone grabbed me by the waist and someone grabbed her by the waist; the only problem was we still had a death grip into each other’s hair. We both cried out and let go as I went limp into whoever was holding me and carrying me away from the scene.

“Avery as much as I don’t mind you standing up for yourself, I don’t particularly like the idea of having you near her either,” Logan murmured in my ear.

I turned around and hugged him. “I’m just sick of her, of her believing she can stomp over me Logan. I’m tired of it, I had to it.”

He caressed my hair. “I know and that’s okay. You had to. I just wouldn’t have controlled myself if she had hit you. I’m glad Rowan let us know,” he told me squeezing me protectively.

I swallowed. “Well thanks for interfering,” I told him, looking into his eyes.

He winked. “Whenever you need me beautiful,” he told me and leaned in to kiss me, pressing me close to him.

I smiled. “Thanks,” I told him honestly once he freed my lips and was tracing little circles with his thumb finger in my waist.

“What are you thanking me for Ave?” he asked, tucking a lose strand of my hair behind my ear and caressing my sore cheek.

“Everything, and don’t ask what everything is,” I smiled.

He grinned. “I won’t, thanks to you too.”

“You’re welcome,” I told him and rested my head into his chest.

Damn I loved him, so freaking much.

Rowan threw her head back and laughed. “I’ve never seen you like that babe. You were a total animal back there!”

I rolled my eyes, but truth is I was smiling. “Oh I was not.”

“Oh you were, for a moment there I thought you might bite her head off, the bitch deserved it. It was priceless! And the look on her face! I’m telling you Avery I didn’t know you could hold so much fury in your system!”

“Ro, let’s not discuss it, please?”

Logan chuckled beside me. “I didn’t see the whole fight, but it did look pretty intense.”

Rowan nodded. “Oh it was. You should have seen them slapping each other and all,” she said like it was totally cool that we had slapped each other or something.

“She slapped you?” Logan’s eyes narrowed.

“Um, yeah, kinda,” I mumbled.

Braden let out a small snicker. “She looks so freaking calm.”

Rowan grinned. “Which is the most impressive thing in the situation baby. She usually is.”

I blushed. The party was over and all we’d been talking about the fight since we left the house and probably would be until we reached the guy’s cars, there still was a block missing for that.

“But she dared slap you?” Logan asked again. “That monstrous little…” he trailed off.

I waved my hand dismissively. “In my defense I slapped her back.”

“Outstandingly so, may I add,” Rowan interfered. She was so proud of me for some odd reason I couldn’t even begin to understand, she just was.

Logan scoffed and mumbled, “Still.”

I smiled and kissed his cheek, reassuringly. “It’s okay.”

Braden and Rowan continued talking about something else not related to my only—and hopefully last—fight, while Logan just placed his arm around my waist protectively.

I was perfectly happy with myself and the situation. Don’t ask why but I knew Becca wouldn’t cross me again or at least she wouldn’t without a fight.

*

“Well goodbye,” I told Logan as I searched for my key.

“Goodbye,” he told me, caressing my cheek.

I looked up to his face, he had this cute little half-smile that looked almost amused and his eyes well his eyes, just they made me dizzy.

“What?” I asked nervously.

“Nothing Ave,” he grinned. “I’m just admiring how beautiful you are.”

I blushed. “I thought I was amazing, you know?”

He winked. “Of course you are, amazingly beautiful, that’s what you are.”

I fought a grin and decided to just go for it and placed my arms around his neck. “Thanks for the compliment Logan.”

He smiled cheekily. I loved his cheeky smile, and I couldn’t help myself I just had to kiss him right there on the spot.

He seemed surprised at first, like he wasn’t expecting it at all and I liked that I could surprise him. He responded after a second, pressing me against the door and running his hands through my hair, I tousled his hair as well, pulling slightly when he somehow captured my tongue between his teeth, resulting in a little moan on both parts. I liked this, this more physical part of our relationship.

I was barely breathing by this point and he left my lips to do down my jawline and then lower, to my throat as I tried to get some air into my lugs, any air, some air as my eyes rolled back in pleasure.

Someone cleared their throat and my eyes snapped open and Logan let my neck free, just placing his arm around my waist and turning to face whoever interrupted.

My freaking brother. Really? Did God hate me or something?

Caleb was smirking so huge. “Avery I see you are having fun.”

I blushed furiously and nodded. “Um, I was.”

He snickered. “Logan.”

“Um, Caleb. Hi, how are you doing?” he asked him.

“I’m fine, sure I won’t ask how you two are doing,” he winked.

Cocky bastard.

Logan chuckled. Really? He thought this was funny? Oh right, he was always ultra-cool with everything.

“Well I see you inside Ave. Logan nice to see you,” he grinned at us and signaled with his eyes to move out of his way.

Did someone have a gun nearby? Really where are psycho stalkers or psycho killers when you need them?

We moved out of his way and he entered the house still smirking and gloating, when the door closed behind him Logan let out a shaky laugh. “Well that was embarrassing.”

“You think so?” I muttered.

He smiled. “I’ll see you Monday Ave,” he told me and kissed my forehead.

I smiled. “Sure, see you.”

He retreated into my lawn and looked over his shoulders. I waved at him.

He winked.

I bit my lip and opened the door to the house only to find Caleb laughing his guts out in our foyer. “Who would have thought my innocent sister would have a guy kissing her neck in our porch? Certainly not me Ave.”

I rolled my eyes. “Shut up Caleb.”

He laughed. “I can’t wait to tell Dad about this!”

I glared at him. “You wouldn’t.”

He smiled and I knew he was playing. “Of course I wouldn’t Ave. I just like to tease you sis,” he winked and placed his arms around me in a big bear hug.

I laughed. “I know Caleb.”

“Kids what the hell is going down there? I’m trying to sleep!” Mom demanded in her grumpy voice.

Caleb laughed and set me back in the floor. “Nothing Mom,” he called. “Want to watch History Channel with me?” he said to me.

I grinned. When we were at New York we all used to look at the History Channel together. Caleb, Dad, and I all marveling at the history of chocolate, or the first seismograph or even who used natural gas first. It was our thing and just for ritual’s sake I would. “Sure Caleb.”
