Chapter Nineteen

The phone rang as I prepared myself a sandwich.

“I’ve got it,” I called out into the house. I was sure Caleb wasn’t home, but I didn’t know about Mom.

I set aside the knife and walked over to the phone. “Hello?”

“Hey kiddo,” Dad’s voice came from the other side.

“Hey,” I beamed. “So are you calling me to give details?”

He laughed. “Yes, sorry I waited so much, but I had so much work and I barely managed to take Helen out. So it’s been kind of hetic.”

“Don’t worry, you called. That’s what counts, now I want a recap up from first date.”

“Okay, first date. We ordered and she looked stunning. I asked her if she had family, at first she was very closed up, her guard up. She told me that yes she had two kids: Stephen and Sydney both were visiting their father in California. I logically told her about you and Caleb. We spent the night doing questions about each other. For one she’s an editor here in NY, I told her you loved books. We spent a lovely afternoon. I took her back home and watched as she left up for her apartment wondering why the heck hadn’t I kissed her,” he sighed a little at the end of this.

I bit my lip. “Go on.”

“Well, on our second date I took her out to Central Park, overrated I do realize, but it was near the office, we bought ice cream and I did kiss her this time as she took a cab. And well I’m going to tell you a resume of the rest of our dates. Third date she chose the place, she likes to take control and we went over to a club. Can you believe that? I felt so odd and old, but she was right in her comfort zone and I had a lot of fun,” he chuckled like something else had happened that night. “And on our fourth date we just chilled around at her apartment watching movies.”

“That’s so cute Dad,” I cooed down the phone. “I can’t wait to meet her, officially.”

“I have a feeling you’d like her and maybe even her daughter Sydney. I’d be meeting her by the end of August.”

I swallowed. Don’t ask why, but I did not like the idea of sharing my Dad with an unknown New York girl, even if she was the daughter of Dad’s girlfriend. I just didn’t like it at all. Why should she spend more time with him than I did, if I was her daughter?

“That’s awesome. I really hope you like her,” I told him.

“Hello George,” a feminine voice was heard in the distance.

“Is that Helen?” I asked him excitedly.

“Um, yeah. Want to say hi?” he asked.

“Another time, tell her I say hi though,” I told him.

“Sure will kiddo. Love ya,” he said and the phone line went dead.

“Love ya too Dad,” I murmured out to the phone and put it back into its base.

“I’m home,” Giovanna called and I heard her heels click across our floor. “Avery is Oli home?” she called.

“I dunno Giovanna,” I called back.

Her head popped into our kitchen and she sighed. “I have a date with Jem, no less and I don’t know what to do with my hair. Any ideas?”

I shook my head. “I’m not the girl for the assignment Giovanna. I’m sorry.”

She groaned. “Of course when you need help the most no one can give help you.”

I rolled my eyes. Well at least she wasn’t all gone.

“I can’t believe he didn’t go for it!” Rowan screamed signaling to some massive point I was apparently missing over at the court. “You boyfriend is an opportunity loser!”

I rolled my eyes and looked over at the first bleachers where a pair of suited men were watching the game and scribbling away in note pads. They were talent scouts, college scouts you could tell so it did not worry me since Logan still had a high school year to leave for college.

“He knows what he’s doing,” I told Rowan.

“He DOES NOT! He had the field CLEAR! Fucking clear!” she screamed. She was passionate about this, apparently.

“Whatever,” I told her as Logan scored and I smiled gloatingly. “See Ro? He knows what he’s doing.”

“Whatever,” she muttered. “He could have another point under the belt even if he knows what he’s doing.”

Again I rolled my eyes. “Whatever Ro.”

“Braden get your ass moving baby!” she screamed as the college people shot her a look.

I held back a giggle. Why did they always stare at my best friend like she was a freak show? Because she was a freak show.

“I swear if he doesn’t move I’ll go and smack that ass of his,” she called to no one in particular.

I giggled this time. “Rowan you’re so embarrassing.”

She winked, her way of saying ‘Don’t I know it? I’m totally okay with it’.

“Are you going over at Logan’s?” I asked her.

That’s right Logan was throwing this big party with the purpose of getting wet and dirty. And no beer since his parents were home which was so unusual for a party, but I wasn’t complaining. It would be good for kids around to have a no booze party.

“Of course I am going Ave. He’s your boyfriend who happens to be one of my boyfriend’s best friend and you are my best friend and we’re getting wet,” she winked.

I rolled my eyes and smiled at her, I couldn’t help it. “You are such a freak Ro.”

“You too babe,” she winked and hugged me.

“Someone breaks something and you will pay for it, okay Logan,” Mrs. Trainor told him carefully.

He nodded. “Of course Mom, now you go upstairs and don’t worry. We’ll be fine, right Ave?” he asked me.

I nodded. “Of course,” I told her reassuringly.

“Hey sucker, when is everyone coming down here?” Lorelei asked Logan leaning in a kitchen counter.

“You weren’t invited if I do recall right,” he teased.

Lorelei gasped. “Last time I checked it was my house too Mr. Trainor.”

He shrugged. “So?”

Mrs. Trainor sighed and rolled her eyes., “Your father and I will be upstairs, watching,” she warned.

“Okay Mom, have fun,” Logan winked as Mrs. Trainor left the kitchen mumbling something to herself. “You Lor can go and do something else the party won’t start for another hour Ave and I will prepare things,” he said the last part like a hint.

Lorelei nodded. “Fine, but as soon as another soul steps through that door I’m in for the party.”

Logan nodded. “Fine, now go.”

“Very discreet Logan,” I muttered sarcastically.

He laughed and kissed my neck. “What can I say?”

I slapped his arm playfully. “Nothing, that’s what. Now we’ll better get these balloons filling up.”

“Yes ma’am,” he did one of those military salutes and took the bag of balloons and the bucket and marched up to his backyard.

I rolled my eyes at him and followed him out.

He set the bucket and the balloons down by the garden hose and don’t ask why I saw his intentions clearly on his face and stepped on it to keep the water from coming out as he opened the pipe that would let the water come from it.

He smirked. “Stop stepping on it Ave.”

I shook my head and placed my hand in my hip. “Nuhu.”

“Well just remember it was you blocking it,” he shrugged and tackled me, the garden hose in his hand and letally splashing across my face and clothes as Logan maneuvered it and I squealed.

“It’s cold Logan! Stop getting me wet, you ass!” I screeched and tried to push the water away as I heard him laugh.

He didn’t stop, but I sat up and stuck my tongue out at him, trying to get him wet, pushing the garden hose away.

He set it aside and laughed at me. “You are so wet Ave.”

“No shit?” I muttered.

He laughed.

I glared at him and shoved his chest, he caught my hand in his chest and brought me closer to him. “Don’t get mad Ave, I was playing.”

I didn’t answer. I wasn’t mad, not really more like annoyed or baffled or something.

His lips crashed mine and I could feel his chest through both out wet shirts. I held onto his wet hair and his hand moved to my waist.

I getting the courage from God knows where, probably the squeeze Logan gave to my neck I got on top of him, not in a dirty sense, well maybe a little since we were full on a make out session and we were both wet, but I wasn’t really thinking.

I wanted to try a little something. I freed my lips from his and went around kissing his jaw line as I heard his breath become hitched and short. It was oddly turning me on.

“God Ave, do you want to drive me insane?” he growled.

I smiled at him. “No, I’ll stop,” I told him about to get off he when the little cheater he is caught my lips again, this time his teeth grazing my lips slightly.

I got off him and sat in the grass, trying to catch my breath. “We should really fill those balloons,” I told him, running a hand through my wet hair and looked down at my white shirt. What had I chosen to wear white today out of all days was beyond me, but now you could see my salmon bikini.

“We should,” he admitted, but didn’t move instead placed his arm around my waist and kissed my shoulder.

I smiled at him and rested my head against his chest. It felt like the perfect moment to say the L word.

“Well let’s get moving,” he said and kissed my forehead before standing up and the L word must be forgotten for now.

“I swear I’m going to kill you!” Rowan threatened as a water balloon splashed right in her chest, the threat was of course directed to me.

“You might try,” I stuck out my tongue at her and bolted as she aimed her water balloon at me when I heard Logan’s amused laugh. It was just the soccer team and their companions so we weren’t really that much of a huge crowd.

“Oh you bet I will,” she taunted somewhere behind me, but I kept running dodging her by the tree when another balloon hit my side. I looked up at a smirking Braden, while I distracted myself another one gave me right in the head.

“Yeah baby! That’s how we roll!” Rowan called victorious and ran up to hug Braden, kissing him quite intensely.

I glared at them and saw Logan in my peripheral vision carrying a bucket and picking up a balloon aiming it at them before throwing it flawlessly and crashing right into their making out faces.

I laughed out loud.

“No one harms my girl without a proper provocation,” he said and winked at me.

I grinned at him and ran up to hug him, but it was about getting wet so I grabbed a balloon of the bucket and smashed it right in his chest.

He laughed and held me by the waist. “Such a little tease,” he murmured and leaned in to kiss me. We were both wet and he wasn’t wearing a shirt which was actually a huge distraction factor since I mean I could feel his wet abs contracting as he kissed me. It was driving me insane. I pushed him closer gripping at his wet hair and pushing a little at it, I liked his hair. He let out a little moan and I could hear whistles from somewhere over our backs, but for once I didn’t care someone was watching us I kept kissing him; I kept getting lost in his hair and kept loving his abs in my own bare stomach. I kept loving it all, loving him.
