Chapter Twenty

“Don’t you miss Logan?” I asked Carol as I grouchily adjusted a sign advertising a new book.

Carol shook her head. “Not that much. I miss seeing you grin for sure, but then again we always managed without him.”

I bit my lip. So truth. I’ve never needed Logan Trainor before I don’t see how that changed or why it changed. Oh right I fell in love with him, that’s how it changed. Damn.

Our little bell rang and both Carol and I looked up to find a frowning Mark at our door.

“You didn’t call me,” he accused.

“I didn’t really felt like it Mark. I’ve got no reason to and you have no right to show up in here and demand for me to call you,” she mumbled angrily.

“I need to talk with you Carol,” he told her quite convincingly.

Carl glared at him. “About what? How you broke my heart and left after that Mark? Because if it is about that I don’t want to talk with you.”

“Chameleon,” he murmured, pleading. “You never heard me out. You just screamed at me and I ended up screaming at you. I meant to set things straight. I still mean to if you let me.”

Carol flinched, but didn’t say a thing. This felt wrong, to be here.

“Um, I’ll leave you two alone,” I mumbled and fidgeted with my nails.

“No Avery, you don’t have to leave because Mark and I have nothing to talk about,” Carol told me sharply and I shot her a look. They did have something to talk about. A baby for God’s sake.

“Carol, please?” Mark asked, walking over to the counter to look into her eyes.

She shook her head. “No Mark, just leave. Please leave.”

He shook his head too. “I left the last time you asked me to and look where it led me. Nowhere Chameleon, nowhere. I think about what could have been every day and I’m sorry.”

Carol closed her eyes and then opened them, they were red. “All I’m asking of you Mark is to leave, it’s the least you can do.”

He shook his head, decided. “No, I won’t leave until you talk with me.”

“YOU WANT TO FUCKING TALK?” she screamed at him.

“Yes,” Mark spoke, not moved by her sudden mood swing.

“OKAY! LET’S FUCKING TALK THAN MARK! You fucking cheated on me and you come here asking for my forgiveness? When I found you fooling around with a fucking whore in our bed?” she screamed.

Mark did flinch this time. “Just hear me out, like you didn’t all those years ago, would you Carol!” he snapped.

Carol’s nose blasted and I could see her chest falling up and down as she tried to breath. “Go on Mark! Lie to me again!”

“I DIDN’T FUCKING LIE TO YOU CAROL!” he screamed. “If you just STOPPED and LISTENED for a second you would know I was telling you the truth!”

She snorted and he breathed in.

God I wasn’t sure I should be watching this, I should leave. Yeah totally leave, but somehow my feet were glued to the floor.

“You want to know the truth Carol? I was so drunk I couldn’t even remember my name and yes we were kissing, but we hadn’t removed anything else because all I could fucking think about was about you and how gorgeous you were and how I couldn’t wait to marry you! While she kissed me I remembered you and I pushed her away, and then you come storming in and I freaked out,” he told her, reasonably calm by now.

Carol glared. “I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU MARK! Still, you still cheated on me and you left me to deal with my grief. YOU FUCKING LEFT ME WHEN I NEEDED YOU THE MOST!” she cried. She was on a full sob session by now.

I should hug her maybe.

“YOU ORDERED ME AWAY CAROL!” he screamed, the veins at his neck bulging. “I was obeying your damn wishes!”

She sobbed. “I didn’t want you to go AWAY MARK! I WANTED YOU TO HUG ME AND TELL ME YOU WERE SORRY!”

Mark pinched the bridge of his nose. “It didn’t seem like it.”

“OF COURSE IT DIDN’T FUCKING SEEM LIKE IT!” she sobbed. “YOU HAD JUST CHEATED ON ME AFTER I FOUND OUT I WAS PREGNANT!” she screamed at him and collapsed, they weren’t sobs anymore. They were heartbroken, raged sobs. The kind that shook someone up and down, the ones where you can’t get enough air into your lungs, it was that kind of sob.

Mark’s eyes narrowed and I saw tears rimming the edge of his eyes. “You were pregnant? With my child?” he whispered.

Carol sobbed uncontrollably, while all I could do was stand there and watch; I felt so damn useless.

“What happened with him?” Mark whispered desperate for an answer as tears rolled down his cheeks. “WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM CAROL!”

Carol sobbed some more and maybe that’s when Mark understood Carol didn’t want to be yelled at, she’d had enough of that but instead wanted to feel loved, because he walked around me and went behind the counter to hug Carol.

As soon as he wrapped his arms around her they both burst out sobbing.

“Why didn’t you tell me Chameleon? Why? I could have been there for you,” Mark whispered.

I closed my eyes and felt a tear slip down my cheek. I at least owed them some privacy, so I turned around and wandered up some halls before I heard another sob and I broke down too, there in the middle of an aisle. I just felt their pain. It was so sad to see two people who used to love each other so torn and beaten because of one single action. One single wrong. It was devastatingly sad and so I let the tears fall too.
