Epilogue

Four Years Later

Mason traced little circles with his thumb finger in my arm.

I looked up at him and he looked down, grinning. “What baby?”

“I love you,” I told him, kissing his lips lightly.

“I love you too,” he murmured.

I grinned and turned my head back to the TV. We were watching ESPN oddly enough because Mason was into sports, just not lived for them. He was more of a movie person.

“So the team who will be representing the US in Brazil 2014 is formed by,” the reporter went on saying a whole bunch of names until he got to one I did recognize. “Logan Trainor who plays for Manchester United.”

My eyes narrowed at the man in our screen. He was different, but the same. It was so weird to look at him like this, like a man when I left a guy behind. His face was sharper than I remembered and his eyes looked different too, like he was in love but that this time it was the thing. How could I tell? I don’t know, but the reporter confirmed as he gave the news of his engagement. Good for him.

“It’s the same Logan you used to date?” Mason asked me.

I nodded. “Yeah.”

As I said this I had a flashback, one of those where you are just immersed into the memory.

I stood awkwardly outside my house as I saw Logan’s Jetta drive up the stairs.

It had been almost a year since I last saw him, a year we’d communicated through e-mail, web cam and sometimes phone. Somehow I felt more awkward than excited.

I’d felt excited a week ago when I’ve been hanging out at Rowan’s when Mason came in to say hi. During Thanksgiving we had bonded up and I was attending Michigan State University, like he had been for two years now.

The car parked and Logan came out of it. He looked different, not my Logan somehow. He was there, but it wasn’t the same. For once my heart didn’t leap out of my chest and I didn’t feel the urge to jump into his arms.

He waved awkwardly at me and I waved back, equally awkward.

He walked up our lawn and reached me. “Hey Avery.”

“Hey,” I mumbled.

He shuffled his weight from one foot to the other awkwardly and kissed my forehead.

“How are you?” I asked him.

“Awesome, you?”

“Great,” I answered looking out into the neighborhood.

He nodded. “Um, that’s good.”

I nodded. “How’s London?”

“British,” he smiled and that seemed to do it. “I, this is so awkward,” he took a breath. “I’m going to take this out of the way. I well, I, I like someone else.”

I blinked. Somehow my heart wasn’t breaking, my world wasn’t collapsing onto itself like it happened in books. I did not feel like I did when he first left me. Oddly enough, I was happy for him. “You do?”

HE nodded. “I do and I’m sorry, but it kind of happened.”

“I understand and thanks for telling me face to face.”

“I owed you Ave. You’ll always be my first love,” he winked.

“You’ll always be my first love too.”

He grinned and hugged me.- “I’m sure you will meet someone too. Someone better than I ever was and he is going to be all yours forever Ave.”

I was pretty sure I already had.

And I had found someone after that. That summer I did cross word with Logan once or twice and I won’t deny things were kind of awkward, but I also got close to Mason. We spent nights out, watching the stars, joking around. Rowan even teased us about how she always knew we’d end up together(this was total bullshit of course) and after three years we still were together.

As for Logan, well he went back to London and he got together with the girl he had told me about.

I honestly wished him the best since he did taught me things I would never forget and he was my first love. He’ll have that spot in my heart forever.

“I do remember when he left,” Mason told me. “I could hear your sobs and screams through the walls.”

I stared at him. “You did?”

He nodded. “Totally and I do remember the morning after as well. You looked so beaten.”

I bit my lip. “I was, but your words helped me a lot.”

He smiled and his lips touched mine briefly. “I love you.”

“I love you too Mason.”

“Never stop loving me, please,” he said more to himself than to me.

“I never will,” I answered him.

He turned to me and grinned as I kissed his lips and he picked me up bride style carrying me to the bedroom.

I laughed and he joined in with me, letting me fall in bed and kissed my lips. I smiled into his lips and sighed, content as ever.

And I knew I had to thank Logan Trainor for this. As odd as that may sound, because he taught me one of the most important lessons of my life: to be myself no matter who I was with.
