Chapter Eight

“Either you are telling me you didn’t like it or you’re telling me you didn’t understand it. Which one is it?” I asked Logan while he moved books from a box to the shelves.

“Um, maybe both? Not that I didn’t like it, but well the characters were just I don’t know. It’s hard to explain. That feeling you get when the book is well written, but the characters are not likeable and you would gladly push them over a cliff if you had to.”

I chuckled. “Okay, I have gotten that feeling once. But not the characters just the whole book, because I had liked the character with another plot. Let’s just say there was an albino involved,” I shuddered.

Logan laughed. “Oh, really?”

I nodded. “Totally. He was so creepy and the book was tedious. I mean it.”

He chuckled.

“What?” I demanded.

“Nothing. Can’t I chuckle now?”

I rolled my eyes at him. “Whatever.”

*

I rang the doorbell at Rowan’s place and waited patiently after a text claiming she needed help urgently. Yup, a 911.

“Hey Avery,” Rowan’s older brother, Mason, said a big goofy smile in his face.

“Hey Mason,” I mumbled shyly. “Um, I’m looking for Rowan.”

He nodded. “Of course. C’mon in,” he said. I won’t lie to you Mason was attractive—with his chestnut wavy brown hair, green eyes and toned body—to say the least and when I first moved here I had the hugest crush ever, of course I’d been a freshmen and he had been a junior so he was like that attractive guy you know you won’t ever have, and I had no feelings for him whatsoever but I still felt very self-conscious. “She’s upstairs. I’m sure you know your way.”

I nodded. “Thanks,” I told him and darted upstairs as quickly as I could. I actually felt very self-conscious around everyone I didn’t know well. Guys specially.

I entered without knocking, because well Rowan didn’t do that when she went to my house so I never did it when it came to hers.

I found her dumped in bed, her face facing the ceiling and ‘Two Is Better Than One’ playing softly. I cocked my head to the side in the slightest.

“Ro, what’s wrong?” I murmured.

She groaned as I made my way up to her bed, sitting in the edge.

This is what’s wrong!” she exclaimed pointing to a zit in her chin. “I have a freaking zit! The same night I just happen to have a date with who could possibly be Channing Tatum’s clone!” she groaned.

I rolled my eyes. “Make up will cover it Ro,” I assured her.

She made a whiny nose. “It won’t! It’s gigantic!” she screamed.

I sighed. It wasn’t gigantic it was barely noticeable, but Rowan liked drama. “Rowan it’s not that big, okay. Make up will cover it, I promise. Now start getting ready or else you’ll be late,” I told her, like a mother would to their child.

Her blue eyes looked up at me. “You promise?”

I nodded. “Promise. Now off to get ready,” I told her.

She grinned at me and sat in bed. “I swear I would be lost without you babe.”

I smiled. “Yeah I know. Who wouldn’t?”

She laughed and hugged me. “You’re the best.”

“I think we made that clear Ro,” I said between laughs.

She laughed too and let me go. “Showtime!”

I stayed for her full preparation, of course that implied giving my opinion in make-up, clothes and if her zit was covered, which it was totally and completely. In the end the product was a gorgeous Rowan looking beaming and well gorgeous.

“How do I look?” she asked me, twirling around so I could get a better view.

“Gorgeous,” I told her with a small smile.

She grinned. “I hope he thinks so too and if he doesn’t, well he’s out of here,” she said teasingly.

I laughed. “If you say so Ro.”

The doorbell rang then. Good to know he wasn’t the type to honk and expect the girl to rush outside. Score for Braden. “I would get that fast if you don’t want Mason answering,” I told her.

Her eyes narrowed and she dumped a whole bunch of stuff in her bag and stormed out the room, I followed behind her, chuckling slightly.

“I get that,” she called out to Mason who I guessed was in the living room.

“Okay Ro as you wish,” he called back.

She got to the door and turned to me. “How do I look?”

“Gorgeous Ro,” I assured her.

“Is the zit completely covered?” She demanded.

I nodded. “Totally, now Braden must be getting impatient, so get that.”

She nodded and winked, as her hand twisted the door knob.

“Hey,” Braden grinned at her.

“Hello,” Rowan smiled brightly at him.

“Oh hi Avery,” he said, noticing me.

“Hello Braden, well I must leave so you two have fun at your date,” I told them and scooped past Rowan and waved at them

They made such an adorable couple.

*

“Oh Avery,” were the first words Rowan told me by the phone, waking me up by the way. Yes I do like to sleep early; it was just eleven o’clock, so what?

“What Ro?” I groaned.

She sighed, the kind of wistful happy sighing you only get after a good sweet tender kiss and you’re about to gush your guts out to your best friend. “He is the most awesome guy I’ve ever known,” she said. “He is such a gentleman and he makes me laugh like in hysterics, but he can also gaze into my eyes into silence and not have the awkward sort of silence and it’s like he’s gazing into my soul, corny and cheesy and out of one of your romance books this may sound, he does,” she said and I tried not to take personal offense into her words. “And he’s the best kisser ever! Soft, tender, passionate, hot, lustful, slow and sexy all into one Avery,” she giggled.

I grinned. “That’s awesome to hear Ro. I’m glad you two had such an awesome time,” I told her.

She giggled some more. “Oh we did. I tell you the entire details tomorrow babe. Now sleep tight and have hot steamy make out dreams with your boyfriend,” she said.

I grimaced. “Ew, Rowan disgusting.”

She laughed. “Logan is right; you can read about that kind of things and blush at the mention of them. It’s funny.”

I rolled my eyes. “Good night Rowan,” I told her and the last thing I heard was her laugh down the phone.

I closed my eyes and rolled around, again and again. Damn, thank you very much Rowan now I couldn’t sleep.

I rolled again and groaned, reaching for my book at the bedside table. I switched on the light and started reading.

I was up until around four in the morning. I’d really need to thank Rowan when I next saw her. I placed the book back in the bedside table, I had like forty pages to finish, but my eyelids couldn’t stay open any longer.

I let unconsciousness claim me then.

*

“Hello Avery,” Carol grinned at me next morning.

I grunted at her as a hello. I felt like a zombie, there was this numbing pain in my head and I could barely move my limbs.

“God Ave-star you look dead,” Luke told me. “You have a face that indicates you could really use some caffeine.”

I nodded at him. “Yes, please.”

“Working,” he grinned and went off to work his magic.

“What happened to you?” Carol asked, probably seeing the bags under my eyes.

“I fell asleep at four A.M. Carol and woke up at eight. I slept four hours and I’m grumpy and want a bed, desperately,” I groaned.

She shook her head. “May I ask why did you fell asleep that late?”

I sighed. “Rowan called to tell me about her date, when I hung up I couldn’t go back to sleep and so I read.”

She shook her head disapprovingly., but didn’t comment.

“Hello beautiful,” Logan smiled, kissing me briefly in the lips.

I rolled my eyes. I looked and felt anything but beautiful. My face was sullen, I had bags under my eyes, my hair was messy and out of place in my ponytail; resume is I looked like a mess.

“Hey,” I mumbled.

“Here’s your coffee, Ave-star,” Luke said and handed me a steaming cup of concentrated energy.

I took a sip. Pure and simple bliss.

“Thanks Lukester, you’re the best,” I told him.

“Oh, I know,” he said.

Carol scoffed. “Keep dreaming Luke.”

Logan laughed.

*

I took a sip of my coke as I waited for Rowan to start. She had been silent the whole way and it was making me edgy, it was only a matter of time until she burst.

“It was wonderful Avery,” she finally spoke. “It was everything I could have asked for and he’s just so yummy and sexy and sweet. He’s like a dream come true. All I can think of is of how much I really want to kiss him right now.”

I smiled. “I’m happy for you Ro.”

She giggled mischievously. “Oh believe me I’m happy too. He’s so sure of himself, without being extremely cocky and well he has such sensual lips, they are more sensual than Logan’s, no offense.”

I laughed. “None taken.”

“And he knows how to make me feel special with every touch and not in a perverted way, but I don’t doubt he’ll be great in those matters too,” she giggled naughtily.

I rolled my eyes and groaned. “Please let’s not talk about that, shall we Ro? How about normal, not dirty business of yours into which I have no interest whatsoever,” I told her, wrinkling my nose.

Believe me I’d had enough with her first time account. Enough. For. A. Lifetime. Really, I didn’t want to know that type of things until it was my own time and I really hoped it was still a while for it. Rowan claimed I’d be the only girl in America to get virgin to her wedding. She could be kind of gross, more than kind of.

I shuddered.

She laughed. “You’re so cute and innocent Avery. Okay so, what about you?”

I shrugged. “Same old stuff.”

“Of course since making out with Logan Trainor is an everyday thing,” she smirked.

I glared at her. “We haven’t made out in such an ample sense of the word, actually never gone past a peck Rowan Victoria Tyson.”

She chuckled. “Really? Just pecks, no tongue?”

I groaned. “Please Rowan, let’s not talk about this.”

She laughed. “As you wish.”
