I despise the summer.  Cursing the broken air conditioning system, I wipe the thin sheen of sweat off my forehead with the back of my hand.  The owner of this coffee joint refuses to get the AC repaired.  Grudgingly, I go back to the task at hand: making a frapicino for some snobbish girl that goes to my school.  Adding whipped cream to the top of the mocha liquid, I hand it to the girl, Marianna, with a smile and a “have a nice day!”

“Thank you so much,” she sneers and tosses back her crimson locks.  She dumps a handful of change into the tip jar, “Maybe that’ll help you get some real talent.”  My face burns with shame as I wipe down the sticky granite counters.  Giving me one last snide smile, she exits the café, her Louis Vuitton heels clacking all the way out the door.

I sigh in relief that no one was here to witness her harassing me.  Throwing my visor against the nearest wall, I sink to the floor and pull my knees into my chest.  I don’t get picked on often, but when I do, it really gets to me.

Yep.  This is the glamorous life of Adele Woods: part time employee at Frothy (local coffee shop) and part time socially awkward student at Long Beach High School for the Performing Arts.

Unlike most main characters in teen novels, I’m not outgoing, I do not have any magical powers, and I am not irrevocably in love with mythical creature(s).  The only interesting fact about me is that I go to a private and prestigious school for the arts.  But I hate it.  I hate how shallow and judgmental high school is.  Where you stand on the social ladder is dependent on your talent.  Vocalists and actors make the top of the food chain; the juiciest roles and the best pieces in showcases are claimed by them.  Models, musicians, and dancers are next in the social hierarchy.  Rarely are they given good roles or even considered for showcases.  At the bottom of the food chain, we have scriptwriters, costume designers, and artists.  I’m a mix of all castes: I dance, I model, and I write scripts; none of which are my true talent.  My true passion…well I guess you’ll have to keep reading to find out.

Overall, I’m not a very interesting person.  In fact, I’m rather boring.  My life revolves around school, work, and the library.  However, at the moment, school is not in session, so I just brew coffee and read novels.  As you can tell, I’m not adventurous or daring.  I couldn’t even stand up to Marianna.

So now that you know a little bit about moi, I’ll let you know something that I’ve never told anyone before: I’m tired of being the quiet girl who can’t take risks, who can’t stand up for herself.  I’m tired of playing it safe.  My life is lame and I want some action.

My adventure begins (ironically) at the local library.  I decided to take a risk.  That one decision, that one moment that I stepped out of my comfort zone, set off a chain reaction that changed my life for the better.

So dear reader, I personally invite you to follow my journey from beginning to end.  I implore you to experience my moments of elation and the times that I feel so awkward that I could shrivel up and die.  From the exploitation of my somewhat embarrassing and awkward life, I hope that you’ll realize that you have the power to dictate your life.  The world is in the palm of your hand.

One lone spark can set a forest aflame.  Welcome to the high and low’s of my complicated teenage life.
