Amarasa was agitated. She paced from one side of her library to the other as Tuesday stayed crouched in the corner of her open cell. Her eyes were blank.Every so often, she would gasp, and then go back to her stare.Amarasa knew not to interrupt her, because the vision would be lost, but she was impatient to find her other daughter. She walked angry circles as Tuesday stayed as still as a statue. The girl blinked and stood.Amarasa glanced over at her daughter, daring her to set foot on the carpeted floor.Tuesday thought better of approaching her mother, and matched her toes up with the line between her room and her mother’s.
“What have you found?” Amarasa crossed the small space to stand in front of Tuesday.
“She’s still with the wizards, but will soon be leaving.” Tuesday said and continued when Amarasa said nothing.“She will be traveling to you.You do not need to do anything but wait. She will bring others with her…a man…an animal of some kind…and something that is guiding her, but I cannot see it.It doesn’t exist outside of her body.”
Amarasa cursed and shook her head violently. She should have known.“Good work, darling.I will come for you again, and only you know when,” she slammed the bookshelf in Tuesday’s face and locked it.
Vance had installed a MIC in the child’s brain.Amarasa could override her father’s initial commands with the right software, but where could she find it?She knew that Vance would not tell her anything further about his daughter.
Amarasa walked out of her library and into her bedroom.Of course, all the available tools that she needed were at her disposal, but she needed someone to use them.Amarasa grabbed a cloak from her closet, tied it around her neck, pulled the hood over her head, and walked down to the servant’s entrance of the castle. She walked toward the entrance in the gates where guards were stopping everyone who came and went through them.
“Let me see your ID,” one guard held out his hand toward her, and she pulled her hood back a little to show her face. “M-my Queen,” he stuttered, “f-forgive me.”
“As long as you let me pass,” she pulled her hood back down, and he feverishly nodded.
Jonathan Keepre finished helping his last customer as a woman wearing a cloak stepped into his shop.
“I’m about to close, Ma’am,” he said, and she approached him.He couldn’t see who she was, but tried to look under the hood. She kept her face well hidden.
“I think you’ll stay open for a few moments to talk to me,” she said, and he started to protest. “You will stay, because your life depends on it.”She looked up from under the hood, and he gasped.
“My Queen,” Jonathan bowed his head.“What can I do for you, my lady?”
“First, lock up your store, and I will talk to you in the back.” She wandered into his workspace while he quickly locked his doors and changed his ‘open’ sign to ‘closed’.He was soon back where Amarasa was inspecting some broken equipment on a worktable.“I need you to reprogram a MIC,” she glanced at him once.
“Do you have the EN?” he asked.
“Do not pester me with questions.” She snapped, and he jumped.“I do not know anything about this MIC, or it’s Electronic Number, and I need you to pinpoint its exact location.”
“I will do my best, my lady,” he nodded and crossed over to where a clear sheet of glass framed one side of the office. He pressed a button on a box connected to the wall next to it, and the computer whirred to life.“Can I ask the being where it is functioning?”
“My daughter,” Amarasa said, confidently, and his face blanked a moment before swiftly entering her name into the database.
“I am not finding a registered MIC here,” he scrolled down the page.
“Of course it’s not registered,” Amarasa stood over his shoulder.“It was put there secretly, you imbecile,” she paced around his desk angrily.“I give you permission to break into the database.Do it, or you and your family will suffer greatly.”
“Yes, my lady,” he nodded and hunched over the keyboard.A few minutes later, Jonathan leaned back in his chair and smiled. “Got it,” he said triumphantly.
“Reprogram it to my command,” Amarasa stood over him and watched the screen.“Make it tell her to come to me.” He glanced up at her questioningly.“Hand me the keyboard,” she reached out for it, and he handed it to her without another word. She sank into a chair as he watched.“Don’t you have some cleaning up to do?” she glanced violently at him and he scurried off to the front of his store to sweep.
Amarasa flexed her fingers and typed on the keyboard. She entered long lines of code and sent them to the child’s MIC.Soon, it would be telling her how much her mother missed her, and guiding her straight back to the castle. It was easy to fool with the internal programming of the device, and she was surprised that Vance hadn't put anything but a simple one-lined command into the system. He had written that the MIC was to keep her away from the castle, and Amarasa broke it within three seconds. She soon finished and closed the program, erasing all traces of her editing.
