Ashaa

I moaned softly, unable to pull together even the smallest of strength to try and pick myself back up. All I felt was a thick layer of sweat keeping every tender nerve from setting themselves ablaze. I knew I had talked her into it, but this sort of punishment was not what I had in mind.

"Do not make me walk over there," Kali commanded from afar as her voice hit an all-new low. "Get up before I make you get up."

"Will you never know when to take a break?" I murmured between heavy breaths. There were muscles all over- muscles that I didn't even know I had- that were aching from the way she had just mishandled my body. "Just give me a minute, will you?"

Crunch, crunch.

Oh, now I've hit a nerve.

"You think the wretched people that relentlessly tugged at my leash ever thought to give me a break?" Her words spat in an all-serious tone as her shadowed figure casted over me, blocking out the only working light that kept the area illuminated. "I've taken beatings that lasted hours longer than the few minutes you've shared with me!"

"I-i'm sorry," I muttered apologetically, making no effort to move from the cold concrete.

Kali stared on, never breaking her sight from mine as the silence fell heavy.

"No breaks," She finally said and not a single word could be said to ever change her mind.

"Ok," I took a deep breath and closed my eyes in anticipation for the pain of attempting to sit up, but it never happened. Instead, I was met with a firm palm pressing down against my breasts, restricting further movement.

"But then again, I suppose I could take a minute to say that that was probably the cutest thing I've ever seen you try to pull off," She commented while crouched with one of her most charming smiles. "In fact I'd probably go a bit easier on you, if you'd just say so."

"You want me to beg in the hopes that you'll be gentle?" I raised a brow, enticed by her words. "All this time and you still don't know me very well, do you?"

"Oh, that's right." Her smile grew into a mischievous smirk. "Sometimes I forget how rough you like to play," She continued to tease, taking the opportunity to lick her lips but what caught my attention was the sudden glaze in her eyes.

Instead of continuing, her body froze entirely as she began to narrow her eyes. To a passer-by, she may have wore her title as a queer-born and looked the part quite well. Once radiant eyes were now glossed over and out of focus, probably lost in her own thoughts as she remained unaware of me or her surroundings.

"Kali?"

Her jaw shifted slightly, subconsciously responding to the tug of our bond but making no further movement to acknowledge her own name.

Kaliska

"Everything we did for you and your family, and this is how you repay us, Kaliska?"

"Michael, I didn't know!" I tried to get him to see, to understand. But damn was he stubborn! Is this where Ashaa got it from? "I swear I didn't know she was going to steal holy water from the fountain, let alone craft a pendant with it! I mean, I didn't even know angel feathers could be forged like that or-!"

"You're telling me that my daughter got this idea on her own, that the idea for a holy union between two very different creatures just came out of nowhere?" His voice grew in volume, reaching the point to where his anger began to shake the very heavens themselves. "You think I don't already know of those secret trips you both take to the gardens alone, the same place I told you to never step foot in?"

"I mean you no disrespect, Michael, but I-!"

"You will fall silent." He shut me down. "You are not above our laws, and you will not accept her as any sort of-!"

"If you only wish her happiness, then why are you acting like I'm poisoning her?" I snapped. Why was he treating me like a criminal?

"This emotion you both bring out in each other is not only dangerous- it plagues the very same law I warned you not to break!" He raised his voice, though he grew a bit more sympathetic with each word spoken. "If you love her as much as you say, you will tell her no without me there to force your hand."

"Force my hand?" I scoffed. "Are you seriously threatening me?"

"I will do whatever is necessary to protect you both from yourselves," He narrowed his eyes, losing what little shred of humanity he had left in his soul as he continued. "If you force me to break her heart, then I will do everything in my power to ensure that yours never be mended."

"Wow," I answered back sarcastically. "Thanks for the great selection of choices."

"Why do you jest as though her heart is some fragile toy to play with?" He asked, suspiciously.

Crap, crap.

"I love her more than you realize," I spoke honestly, though I did try to steer the conversation away from me. "You brought me into this world to be her guardian, and I would never-"

"This again?" I fell silent as Michael narrowed his eyes at me and continued. "I will tell you as I've told you time and time again. You are the salvation for Darius, not Ashaa. The task of my daughter's salvation falls to her rightful guardian, Xion."

"She didn't choose Xion," My stance grew firm and solid. "She chose me, so why won't you just make it official? She wants me to be her guardian, Michael, and I want nothing more than to be hers."

"Yes, she chose you." He spoke with little frustration to show. "But have you really chosen her?"

"What?" I asked, confused.

What the hell did that mean, didn't I just say that I did?

He sighed one last time and turned away from me completely, taking the few steps forward to continue looking out the window of his chambers before I had come in to bother him. "Once again, your request to be her guardian has been denied."

"Just tell me one thing," I tried to understand. "You created us to prevent the prophecy, right? So what does it matter by what hand Darius must die?"

"What does it matter that Ashaa must die by yours?" He countered with a thoughtful tone, though he didn't look back. "You think me cruel, that I wish to see my daughter destroyed but can you not see that I am trying to protect you both from this destructive path? Would it not be easier for you to say goodbye to her now while you both share such little precious memories together?"

"You're afraid I won't be able to kill her if I'm in love with her, is that it?"

"You believe that to be the worst?" His voice grew sadder as I tried to understand what could possibly be worse. "It's one thing to not have the strength to kill the ones you love but in this case, I'm afraid that if you continue to pursue this path, you will lack the strength to stop yourself from ripping her apart."

"No," I shook my head defiantly. "I've heard all of this before and you're wrong. It won't ever come to that. This prophecy you think true is some old, decrepit script built on the fear of an oracle."

The story was absolutely absurd. How could anyone in this realm truly believe some ridiculous tale of one fallen angel to bring about the end of all worlds? Although I guess I shouldn't be so surprised considering my fiancée is afraid of some silly tree deep within the gardens.

Wait.

Did I really call her that?

Fiancée.

Not my girlfriend.

My mate.

My fiancée.

Strange, considering I hadn't even given her an answer yet...

... But I liked the way it sounded.

My fiancée.

"I suppose we'll just have to wait and see about tonight then."

... Wait, what's happening tonight?

The echo of doors opening casted us both into an uneasy silence, but neither of us had turned our heads to see who had entered his chambers unannounced.

"Michael, can we talk about," She trailed off as I turned around immediately, looking to the direction of the same voice that made my heart soar.

Every part of me, even the slightest of fractions that feared rejection, fought the urge to take his only daughter by the hand and ask her to leave all of this behind with me. Instead, I felt Michael's grip press down onto my soul, forcing me to remain in place and wear the most fabricated of smiles.

"What are you doing here?" She asked sweetly, feigning ignorant as she smiled happily upon the sight of me.

You were training with me.

"Oh, we were just training." I repeated his lie almost instantly, feeling the intensity of Michael's hold as I tried to play it off with a smile of my own.

"Without a sword?" She played along, though her words began to lack their previous warmth. "That's rather odd, don't you think?"

"Please," I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms over my chest, taking the opportunity to charm the most gated of hearts. "I've already mastered training with a sword and even though Michael isn't exactly the greatest hand-to-hand expert, I can still kick his sorry-!"

"Why don't you stop parading such arrogance and just leave us alone then?" Her words cut like knives to my skin, taking me by complete surprise.

That voice, her tone...

Always warm and kind when we were alone, but sometimes she would act like a completely different person. But not like Lexi. Yes, Lexi was something else entirely. No, this was different. This was the angel blood flowing through her veins. She'd grow serious and intense, becoming as emotionless and detached as all the other angels in this realm. It was a side of her that felt unnatural, and it was the same side of her that I didn't like.

"If you've already mastered and refined such a skill then I'm sure you can find a better way to spend your time and actually do something more productive."

"Forgive me," I bowed my head briefly to the angel who'd been ever so impatient, eager to see me on my way out.

Just to be free of the awkwardness, I hurriedly made my way towards the exit behind her but before I could make it to freedom, I felt a hand on my arm that stopped me dead in my tracks.

"I understand that you still feel this very queer desire to impress me but I won't always be here to save you, rabbit." I felt myself smiling as her voice spoke in the sweetest of whispers.

Are you ok? Her concern vibrated almost pleasurably across my mind as she became a completely different person again. What happened?

Well, he now thinks you stole the holy water and that our holy union was my idea.

That's probably for the best. A teasing smile swept across her face before she bit her bottom lip sexily. Look, you left before I could ask this morning but did you like the pendant?

Are you kidding? I asked playfully as her smile seemed to grow bigger. I didn't even want to take it off, let alone leave the bed but then I figured it was probably a really bad idea to wear the evidence to an interrogation.

Another idea for the best. She leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on my nose, leaving me to purr excitedly over the simple touch of her lips. But loving the pendant isn't the same as answering yes to my proposal.

Leave now, and try to say your goodbyes tonight.

Tonight?

held my breath as I was reminded of her father's instructions to perform the unforgivable.

She gave her heart to me, and I knew better than anyone just how difficult that was for her to accomplish. If I had lied and told her that I had changed my mind, she'd walk out of my life without so much as blinking an eye.

But if I didn't obey, he'd force his hand.

"Hey," She brought my focus out of my own head and gave an encouraging smile. "Are you-?"

"What happens if my answer isn't the one you want to hear?" I grew pale, unable to stop my mouth as I realized what I had just done.

I watched helplessly as her smile had dropped completely. Screams in my head, pleading for Michael to stop but he continued to torment me- displaying complete control over my entire existence. Could feel my animal responding, wanting so desperately, pleading for me to take back control and say nothing more in fear of ruining everything.

"I don't understand," She said with a barely manageable smile, wanting to desperately for me to say otherwise. "Is this some sort of joke?"

"I-i," I stumbled over my words, trying to think of some way to salvage this.

Walk away, or lose your chance to say goodbye.

"I'm so sorry," I bowed my head quickly and jerked my arm out of her hand, allowing the tension to grow thicker between us while I still had the choice to do so.

...

"Hey, pay attention!" I heard her call out as I felt the pipe that I had previously used against her suddenly albeit playfully smack my rear.

"Huh?" I shook out of my daze fast enough to realize I'd been standing in the middle of a construction site, alone... but where was Ash?

"Hey, are you ok?" She asked a bit louder than before as I tilted my head to the side slightly, hearing her voice in nearly every direction. I turned around entirely, scanning the area all around.

Large in scope, the area was home to cranes and hundreds of cement blocks piled up every few feet. Beams, pipes and rocks everywhere. Likely one of many locations in Le'Nysa that were abandoned but it was the one she found- some place she wanted us to be, thinking that we might have ourselves some sort of brawl like my people did and that everything would be ok. But life didn't always work like that.

Sometimes conflict just couldn't be resolved.

"Please don't think like that," I could feel her voice echo throughout my body.

That sadness in her voice. Soft, depressing. Worrying. Always worrying, but what could we do? Never saw a doctor or looked into counseling. Hell, neither of us even believed in government or law. Why? We never believed in such stupidity. Society was doomed to collapse, and people claiming to have studied human emotion and behavior couldn't possibly fix the centuries of problems we had.

"Would you just stop and come over here?" I asked more irritably than before, no longer amused by her antics.

Stop.

Movement, red.

My head turned, no. Shifted in an instant. Caught a brief glimpse of her hair, but I grabbed her arm just as quickly.

She'd been looking elsewhere, eyes no longer glowing with their warmth. No, this time, it was different. Red, dark red eyes and very clearly, very visible fangs. Slight and shallow breathing, not very noticeable until she started fighting against herself and opted to not breathe at all. Mixtures of lust and the smell of honey dripped off her, and yet she just stood there looking unbothered by the obvious arousal that flushed her skin.

What now?

Her voice but no movement of her lips.

"What now?" I frowned, unable to understand such an idiotic question from a beautiful mind. "You think starving yourself and counting in a corner like your obnoxious coven play-things is actually a brilliant idea?"

"It's better than the alternative," Her gaze fell onto me as I noticed the darkest shades of red in her eyes.

She awoke each and every day with a switch cursed to never flip off. Cravings that crawled like bugs beneath her skin, yearning for anything to keep her on the constant edge of the cliff that she often found herself standing on. I was torn apart mercilessly and rebuilt by a madman until I couldn't remember my own name, but it was incomparable to the demons that actively haunted and drove my wife to the brink of insanity. I might have had the taste for my own flesh but it was Ash who was aroused every time she sunk her teeth into her victims.

I'd lived many centuries and not once had I ever felt an intensity that matched her hunger.

"You're making this more difficult than it needs to be," I stared at the stubborn red-haired woman in-front of me. "Fighting the hunger won't do either of us any good. To be honest, I'd feel more comfortable if you'd just drink from me."

"Why do you always want me to get off on you?" She managed the smallest of smiles as her body remained as tense as ever. "This fantasy of yours has become quite the problem, you know. Tell me, do you ever think of me not bleeding you?"

"What can I say?" I smirked with an attempt to lighten the overall mood. "I get a bit jealous watching you get all hot when you feed off someone who isn't me."

"You're as cute as you are strange," She said simply as her smile steadily began to grow.

Surprisingly, the red in her eyes responded as quickly as she had. With each passing second, the color began to fade to that of the strong blue eyes I'd come to find absolutely irresistible.
