Chapter 11:

I parked the car in the center's parking lot this time and sat there for a moment. I didn't realize, last time, how fancy this place looked. It looked like it was built completely out of glass, except for the building connected to it, which was brick.

Walking in, there was alot of people in the lobby. Mostly family members who were anxiously waiting their loved one's prognosis and nurses on their breaks. I bought me a bottle of water from a vending machine and then made my way to the elevadors.

I pushed the up button and the doors immediately opened. There was no one in the elevador, except a male nurse. He wasn't drop-dead gorgeous but he had some good looks. He had some pretty impressive muscles and went excellent with his tan, his hair was dark brown, and he had dark-blue eyes.

Trying to give enough space, I positioned myself close to a wall and pushed the level I was going to. Out of the corner of my eye, I kept seeing him glance in my direction. This didn't seem weird to me, because I was used to guys checking out my figure. In fact, many guys have told me that I am 'perfectly proportioned'.

"Hi. I'm David." He held out his hand and I politely shook it.

I replied, "I'm Grace."

He smiled and said, "I'm sorry if I came off a little strange...I started talking to you like I've known you for years." He half-laughed, half-coughed and then dropped his head to the ground. "This is awkward for you, isn't it?"

I giggled. "No. You're not coming off strange to me, either."

It felt the ride up was taking an eternity and David and I just stood there in silence. Finally, the elevador opened and I stepped out. David stepped out, also.

"You're going to this level, too?" He asked.

I nodded and replied, "Yeah. I'm visiting my best friend."

David walked beside me down the hallway and asked, "If it's not wrong of me, can I ask what cancer your friend has?"

"You're fine. Um...he is in stage 2 of lung cancer." Evidently, my mind entered reality because I actually said that without choking up.

David sighed and said, "That's a rough cancer...but the good thing is, he can go in remission."

I was looking down at the ground while he was talking, and for once, I looked up. "Remission?"

He looked at me funny. "Yeah. In some patients, cancer somehow disappears for awhile...it's called remission."

"Then I should have hope."

David looked right into my eyes and simply stated, "You should always have hope."

~~~~~~~~~~~
I arrived outside Matt's room with David still escorting me. We had talked about almost everything...what we like to do, his job, my school, Matt, our relationships, and his job. When I got to the door, I turned around and faced David. I smiled and said, "Thanks for walking me here. I enjoyed the company."
"My pleasure. I know how these hallways can be super silent and creepy." He stuffed his hands in his pockets and finally asked the question I knew was coming. "So...can I have your number? I really liked talking to you today..."
I blushed and replied, "Sure." He pulled out his phone and I recited my number back to him. He, quickly, programed it in and smiled.
"Thanks. I'll txt you sometime." I shook his hand one more time and he walked away humming.
Laughing, I knocked on the door and heard Matt yell, "Come in!"
I opened the door, and Matthew was sitting up watching the Nascar race. "Hey beautiful! You're just in time for the race! Jimmy Johnson is gonna win this one."
Matt and I use to watch Nascar every Sunday and we would bet on who would win. Matt would place his money on Jimmy Johnson and I would place mine on Tony Stewart...Matt won everytime.
"How are you feeling?"
He was eating popcorn and staring intently at the television screen. In between bites, he said, "Pretty good. I have to use medical ventilator every two hours, but other than that, I'm fine..."
His tone wasn't the same. I could tell he was lying. "Matt...what are you telling me?"
Knowing that I had figued him out, Matt turned down the TV and looked at me. "Gracie...I have to start chemo next week."
"That stuff helps you though, right?" I never broke eye contact with Matt and even though he tried to, I wouldn't look away until he answered me.
He said, "Yeah...it can help, but it will also make me very sick. I'll get pale, skinnier, and hell I'll lose my hair too."
I could tell he was bummed out about it and so, I raised up and wrapped my arms around his neck. "Matt...don't be discouraged."
"I'm trying not to, Gracie, I'm just becoming hopeless."
Automatically, David's words popped into my head: 'You should always have hope'. I lifted Matt's chin up with my index finger and recited, "You should always have hope."
