I left Matt around 5pm, and on my way out, my phone started buzzing. Justin was calling me. At first, I didn't want to answer but then I thought to myself, he was still going to bother me if I didn't answer.
I hated when he called me that! In fact, I can't remember a time when Justin didn't call me that. "What do you want? I'm in the middle of something."
Laughing, he replied, "You mean you're walking out to your car from the cancer center?"
I didn't reply. I thought it was a little strange that he knew where I was at and sure enough, as soon as I stepped outside, I saw him over at my car.
"So now you're stalking me?" I hung up the phone and walked up to him.
He leaned over and kissed me on the cheek and I reacted by wiping it away vigorously.
"What's wrong with you?" He asked defensively.
I rolled my eyes. "Nothing. I just feel uncomfortable with you stalking me."
He smirked and stated, "You weren't good enough to be stalked."
At the time, I had my back turned. His words cut through me like a knife...he was talking about the night I found out about Matthew. I turned to face him and slapped him hard across the face.
"Don't you ever say that to me again!" I got out my keys and began to unlock my car, when Justin started laughing loudly.
His cheek was blood red and yet, he was laughing. "Maybe I deserved that...but it's the truth. You wouldn't know I was around, if I was stalking you."
I opened my car door and got inside. "Leave me alone!" I started to shut the door, but he was too strong and forced it back open. He squatted down to my level and tried to get me to look at him.
Angry, I kept looking away. Finally, he took his hand and grabbed me at the chin and jawline and turned my head painfully. "Listen to me, you bitch."
His thumb starting rubbing the side of my face, softly.
"What do you want?!" He could hear the panic in my voice and let go of my face.
He punched the side of my car and said, "Nothing. Go ahead and run from me! Like I care." He started walking away from my car and out of the parking lot.
Quickly, I shut the door and locked all the doors. My breathing was rapid and I was scared...I had never seen Justin so mad at me. The hostility in his voice was terrifying.
I started the engine and whipped my car out of the parking lot. I had to be home soon so I would have enough time to get ready for my date. I glanced at the clock on the radio and breathed out a sigh of relief. It was only 5:45. Logan told me to call him if I needed to change the time, but I was going to wait.
While at a stoplight, I checked my phone and realized he had txted me twice.
"Hey. Just reminding you about our date! Can't wait :)"
"Sorry...I was thinking you would forget. I was just wanting to talk to you lol"
His txt messages made me laugh a little, but I was still shaky from Justin. What would he had done to me, if he had not had heard the panic in my voice?
I shuddered as ideas flooded my mind. Focusing on driving, I pushed the thoughts away. Nothing, not even Justin, was going to ruin tonight.
I wouldn't let that happen.
Twirling, I looked myself over in the mirror one last time. I was wearing a navy, glittery dress that had one strap. I had curled my hair until my long, auburn hair had perfect tight curls. Sitting on my bed, I put on my black 4in. stilettos and touched up my makeup with some mascara. I thought I looked perfect, but I wasn't sure where Logan was taking me...I hoped I wasn't over-dressed.
I stepped downstairs and my mom gasped. "You look gorgeous!" She starting taking pictures of me like it was prom and finally I said, "Mom, I think that's enough."
She nodded and sat the camera down. My grandmother was sitting at the table, shaking her head. "You look hideous."
Me and my mom, both, glared at her. She started defending her statement. "What?! The dress is too short, those heels were made for hookers, your hair is frizzy, shall I continue?"
I was still very emotional from earlier, so I tried to hold back tears that were quickly forming. My mom stepped in. "Mom, that was awful of you to say! Why would you ruin Grace's special night?"
I had walked into the living room and was sitting on the couch. I heard my grandmother's soft footsteps and raised up to see her face.
"Gracie, I'm sorry. I was just being honest...because you know that's not my style." She smiled when she said that, but I wasn't in the mood. She continued, "You look beautiful, dear. This man is very lucky to be taking you out."
I pretended to feel better and said, "Thanks, grandma. Apology accepted." She believed me and walked away. At that time, the phone rang and I hurried to pick it up, thinking it was Logan.
"Hi Gracie Angel!'
Knowing that Logan didn't call me that, I realized the man on the other end was my dad.
"Daddy! I'm so glad to hear from you! How are you doing?"
"I'm good, Gracie. Your mom told me you're going on a date."
I glanced over at my mom and she smiled as if she was saying 'guilty as charged'.
"Yeah. I am daddy, but don't worry...he's a great guy."
I heard muffled voices in the background and my dad replied, "I trust that he is..but sweetie, I have to go...have fun tonight, alright?"
"I will. Be safe!"
He hung up and I placed the phone back on the line. As soon as I did, I heard a soft knock on the door. I half-ran, half-walked to the door and answered.
Logan stood there holding a red rose and wearing a black dress shirt with khakis. I was overdressed. I thought to myself.
"Wow. You look beautiful."
I blushed and said, "Thank you."
Waving goodbye, I stepped out of the house and outside with Logan. He held the car door for me and shut it for me.
"So where are we going?" I asked when he climbed in.
He smiled and replied, "You'll see."
