Chapter 16:

I woke up startled. My breathing consisted of short gasps and my heart pounded in my chest. Why the fuck did I have that dream?! Sitting up, I looked over at my clock and saw that it was only 8am.

I climbed out and went into the bathroom. I was feeling good at all and, all of sudden, I was down on my knees and clinging the toilet.

My mom heard me vomiting and rushed into my room. "Honey...are you ok?"

I gasped out, " stomach's just upset."

"Is there something going around the school? Like a virus?" She bent down behind me patting my back and holding my hair out of my face.

I shrugged my shoulder and replied, "Maybe. I'll be fine, though. Thanks."

She patted my back one more time and then closed the door behind her. I raised up and looked at myself in the mirror. "I look fine..," I said to myself, "where did that come from?"

I peeled my wet, sweaty pajamas off and climbed into the shower. I turned the faucet all the way to the right and let the icy cold water rain down on me.

Talking to myself, I said, "I know I'm not sick..."

Then, I had a thought. I quickly washed my hair and body and wrapped a towel around me. I thought about the night I found out about Matt's cancer...when I went home with Justin.

Did we use protection?

I began shaking and had to sit down on my bed. "God...please don't tell me I'm pregnant! Not with Justin's baby!"

Once dressed, I grabbed my keys and went downstairs. My mom was sitting at the table with my grandma eating waffles.

"Are you up for some breakfeast, sweetie?"

I shook my head and replied, "I'll just get something with Matt. Is that alright?"

"...Yeah, honey. As long as you eat something."

I hugged her goodbye and said, "I will. I'll probably be home around 2."

"Alright. Drive safely."

Nodding, I kissed my grandma on the forehead and then headed out the door.

Before I started driving towards San Diego, I stopped at a dollar store and bought a pregnancy test...just in case. I wasn't going to use it until I got to the clinic.

On the way over, my phone started buzzing. David, from the hospital, was calling me.

"Hey Grace! This is David."

His voice sounded so different on the phone. "Oh. Hey! What's up?"

"I was wondering if you had any plans today?"

I didn't want to ruin his excitement but I replied, "Um...I'm visiting Matt today. I'll be leaving at 2, though, if you want to do something then."
David sounded like he got more excited and said, "Alright! Just txt me when you're leaving, alright?"

"Will do." I hung up the phone and pulled into the clinic's parking lot.

My visits to Matt were becoming so frequent, that the nurses now waved at me when I walked in the doors. I, politely, waved back while signing in my name.

Matt was eating Jell-O when I stepped inside. Helen was sitting beside him, reading a magazine, and looked up to see who was coming in. "Hey Grace. How are you today?"

"Pretty good, Helen, thanks." Now that I knew where her son was, she was much friendlier to me...almost her old self. Matt looked up from his Jell-O and said, "You look awful."

Helen glared at her son and exclaimed, "Matthew Theodore Baxter! How dare you say that! Grace...I'm so sorry about that."

I laughed and replied, "It's fine, Helen. I know how Matty is."

Matt, then, looked at his mom and asked, "Do you mind? Can't you see I want some privacy with this hoe?"

Helen rolled her eyes and said, mostly to herself, "You teenagers with language."

She walked out and Matt looked at me with worry. "Seriously, what's wrong?"

"N..nothing. Why would you think something's wrong?"

He looked at me like I was a retard and replied, "Grace. I've known you since we were in the cribs can't keep secrets from me. Spill it."

I sighed and sat down beside Matt. "Do you remember Justin? The one that's always getting in trouble."

"Yeah...what does he have to do with anything?"

I continued, "When your dad gave me the address to this clinic, I wasn't sure how to get Justin brought here."

"Does he know I'm here?!"

"...Yes. But he doesn't know the details, Matt. I'm sorry but there was no other way of finding you."

Matt rolled his eyes and said, "GPS. Anyway, continue with your story."

"When I saw the sign of the clinic, I lost it. I didn't want to believe you were here and I became worse after I saw you. Justin had to drive and I went into his house to clean myself up..."

Matt had his finger interlaced and looked me square in the eyes. "Go on."

"I don't know what happened to me...I guess I was overwhelmed...I had sex with Justin."

Matt's face went blank. He began shaking his head and, finally, asked, " lost your virginity?!"

I nodded and said, "That's not the only thing wrong."

"Oh God..." Matt stated.

"Let me finish...I didn't want to talk to Justin after that night and so I started ignoring his phonecalls, txt, and at school, but he met me here and tried to get me to talk to him...I wouldn't it and he grabbed me by the chin. And then, this morning, I woke up and threw up and I starting to think...I'm pregnant."

Matthew started panicking. "What the hell, Grace! How could you do a stupid thing like that?!" I started shaking my head and repeating, "I don't know...I don't know...I don't know."

Matt calmed himself down and laid his hand on top of mine. "Grace...did you take a pregnancy test?"

I shook my head and said, "No...I bought one, but I haven't used it yet."

"Maybe now's a good time..."

After about 10 minutes, I stepped out of the bathroom and looked at Matt. "Well?" He asked.

I held the test in my hand and showed Matt. There on the end was a pink positive symbol.

I was pregnant...with Justin's second baby.
