Chapter 21:

I woke up the next morning terrified. My mom didn't speak to me anymore last night and I figured she wouldn't today. I was going to see Matt today and, as I got ready, my grandma knocked on the doorway.

"Come on in, grandma." I was running mousse through my hair as my grandma sat down on my vanity stool. She crossed her leg and placed her hands around her knee.

I kept glancing at her and finally asked, "Do you need something?"

She shook her head and just continued watching me. Finally, she sighed and asked, "Is it true, Gracie?"

My hands stopped running through my hair. I turned my head towards her and saw a hard stare looking back at me. "What are you talking about, grandma?"

"Are you pregnant, Grace?" She didn't take her eyes off of me...and that stare she was giving was pure hatred.

I nodded and continued getting ready. "Yes, grandma, I'm pregnant. You are a great-grandmother."

She, finally, blinked and moved her gaze down at my stomach. "How far along are you?"

I tapped my fingernails on my dresser and softly responded, "Not even a month." I felt awkward having this conversation with my grandma before my mom.

She tilted her head to the side and snarled, "Do you feel guilty about it?"

I didn't answer. Instead, I walked over to my door and gestured for her to leave. However, she continued sitting there.

"Get out!" I demanded.

My grandma threw her hands up in the air and stood up. "Fine," she said, "just remember...not only am I filled with anger, your mother is too!"

Good thing I hadn't put my makeup on yet, because the tears started rolling down my face. When my grandma stepped out, I heard another knock on my door.

I whipped my head around, about to scream, when I saw it was my mom.

"Are you going to yell at me, too?" She simply asked.

Ignoring her, I turned around and started putting mascara on. My mom leaned against the doorway and sighed. "Grace, how could you be so careless?"

I slammed the tube down on the dresser and narrowed my eyes. "You don't know what I've been through these past few days!"

My mom remained calm, unlike my grandma, and asked, "Do you want to talk about these past few days?"

"I can't..." Opening my closet, I continued talking, "I made a promise that I wouldn't tell."

My mom walked over and sat down on my bed. "What promise? About the baby?"

I shook my head and said, "No. The baby wasn't the start of all this...Matt was."

"Is Matthew the father?!" My mom's shock was ridiculous. Did she really think I slept with Matt?

I slipped some white sandals on my feet and then stood up straight. "Matt's not  the father, Mom. You don't the father."

She hesitated. "Do be honest, I wish Matt was the father. At least I would be familiar with them."

"I agree..." I mumbled under my breath. She continued, "Gracie, I am very, very disappointed in you...I can't lie about that...but I am also proud of you."

Confused, I asked, "What do you mean?"

My mom stood up and moved some stray hairs out of my face. "I got pregnant when I was sixteen."

I was seventeen! I placed my hand over my mouth and whispered, "What?!"

"You had an older brother...but I didn't keep him. I put him up for adoption 2 months after I had him."

I couldn't believe what she was telling me. My mom got pregnant when she was around my age! To make matters worse, she didn't even keep her baby!

"W..why didn't you keep the baby?" I asked in a hush-tone.

She shrugged her shoulders. "Because my mom would've beat me if she found out." I gasped, "You mean...grandma never knew?!"

My mom nodded and held her finger over her mouth. "She still doesn't know...I married your father when I was 17, because he was enlisting...and then you came along."

"So my brother, wherever he is, is only 1 year older than me?"

She replied, "Yes."

My mind was blown. No wonder my mom didn't scream at me last night...she has been in the same situation!

I had left right after my conversation with mom. She hugged me and said that she would help me any way she could.  I was relieved she told me her story. I decided I was going to take Roscoe with me, to show Matt, and as we were driving he started wimpering.

"What's wrong with you?" I asked in a sweet voice.

I pulled over and picked him up.

"I'm guessing he's wanting to use the bathroom." A voice said from my rolled-down window. I turned and saw David standing next to my car.

Giggling, I climbed out of the car with Roscoe in tow. "What's up?" I asked David.

"On break. What are you doing today?"

I sat Roscoe down on the grass and sat down beside him. "I was on my way to see Matt."

David sat down beside me and said, "Awesome. You haven't been in a couple days, right?"

"Yeah. How'd you know?" Roscoe kept trying to bite my finger and I was having a hard time listening to David.

He finally got my attention. "He's been asking about you. You know he's gone through 5 sessions of chemo without you?"

"Shit. I feel so bad...I've completely forgotten he started chemo!"

David patted my leg and stated, "It's have stuff going on too, you know?"

I nodded and asked, "How is he?"

David hesitated and didn't answer for a minute. "David? Is he alright?" I asked again.

"He's lost his hair."

I closed my eyes and hung my head down. All of Matt's white-blonde hair...gone. "Oh god."

David wrapped his arm around my shoulders. "I'm sorry, Gracie...I figured his parents told you or something." I shook my head, " lately, his parents barely talk to me."

He started whistling for Roscoe to come back to me. I watched as the little pup jumped over the long blades of grass and I started laughing. "Come here, you silly thing!"

I grabbed up Roscoe and started wrestling with him. I stood up at the same time David did, and hugged him. "Thank you for telling me, David. I have to go see him."

"I hope everything goes alright...and it was really great seeing you again, Gracie."

I stayed wrapped in David's arms for a moment longer and then turned to leave. "Wait." David softly said.

Turning back around, I looked at him a little curious. He knelt down and, gently, placed his hand on my stomach.

"Goodbye little man or little girl." He raised his head up at me and smiled at me.

I quitely laughed and waited for David to stand back up. I kissed him softly on the cheek and walked away.

I waited in the lobby for the assistant director to come back. I had to get a leash for Roscoe, even though he was still a tiny puppy.

"This is the smallest leash we have, ma'am." The director of the clinic was Mr. Roberts, a short, fat, bald man who always had a fake smile on his face.

I took the leash and replied, "Thank you, Mr. Roberts." While he was walking away, I sat Roscoe down on the floor and hook the leash to his collar.

We walked down the hallways to the elevators and when we were on one, I held Roscoe in my arms. A nurse almost stepped on him in the elevator and never did apologize!

When I got to Matt's room, I heard laughter and politely knocked on the door. "Come in!" Matt hollered.

I walked in and stopped in my tracks.

There he was. The same Matt...only he was bald. I was silent as a grave.

That's so sad about Matt :( I mean, it's coming, with chemo it's expected, but with cancer, I can't imagine how hard it is to watch someone ad the physical changes that awful sickness makes them go through :( Balding is just the start....On a happier note, I'm glad her mom was "ok" with the baby. She needs to figure out if she wants David or Logan..But I think she needs to worry bout that baby and leave them boys alone!! Haha
