Matthew was immediately at my side. "Didn't you say you were only eight months?"
He placed his hands gently on my sides and helped me stand up straight. I convulged again,
though, with another contraction.
"Yes," I replied with a wince. Matt walked me over to a chair and kneeled in front of me. "Isn't that a little early to be having contractions?"
I looked up and gazed into Matt's blue eyes. "I don't think so, Matt...will you please go get my mom?"
He nodded and stood there a bit longer. I looked at him again and giggled. "I meant now." He smacked his head and replied, "Duh!"
Matt took off speed walking towards the door and left me in the chair, holding my stomach. "Alright, Nash," I whispered, "Don't make this too painful, ok?"
Soon, my mom was rushing over to me. "Honey, are you going into labor?" Her face had a worried expression plastered all over it and I couldn't help but smile. "I think so. We need to
get my bag from the closet and got to the hospital..."
My mom nodded and started walking back to the house. Matt stood next to me and
wouldn't take his eyes off my belly.
"Matt...I need you to call Justin and tell him that the baby is coming. Please tell him I want him to be there." He pulled his cellphone out and took mine from my hand. He looked up
Justin's number and quickly dialed.
After a minute or so, he shut his phone. "I got his voicemail."
"Ugh! He's probably pissed at me,"I mumbled. Matt raised an eyebrow, but didn't ask. I took my cellphone from him and dialed Justin's number again. I got his voicemail, again, but this time
"Justin! I need you to either call me or come to the hospital. I'm pretty sure our baby is coming and I
would like you to be there."
My mom came back with my overnight bag in her hand. "Are you ready, kiddo?"
I sat in the living room, drinking my fourth beer. Jared was in the bathroom when I got
home and when he walked in asked, "Damn, did you bring the bar with you?"
"Shut the hell up," I replied, "I'm not in the mood." Jared threw his hands up and stated, "Take it easy,
man. What happened?"
I sighed and sat my beer bottle down on the table. "I proposed to Grace today." Jared widened his eyes and sat down across form me. "Wow...this is serious. What did she say?"
With my beer back in my hand, I replied, "She said no. That her heart belonged with someone else...I just don't know who."
Jared frowned. "Gosh, bro, I'm sorry. I bet I know who it is."
I whipped my eyes up to Jared and sat up straight. "How? Who is it?" Jared leaned back and crossed his arms.
"Remember when you broke into the school to find her records?" Jared waited for me to nod my head before continuing,
"She has been talking to one of the student teachers there. He's her photography teacher, Mr. Logan
I stood up and started pacing the floor. "I need to see this guy. I wonder if he
would be at the school today."
Jared stood up with me and replied, "Maybe. It is Friday and the students are on break." I grabbed my car keys and looked at Jared.
"Are you coming?"
He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Why do I have to come?"
I stood there with the screen door ajar and simply said, "Cause you're going to have to hold me back from killing this mother fucker."
My mom sat beside me in my hospital room. I was, in fact, going into labor and so far it
had been 2 hours.
I winced as another contraction happened and then sighed. "Why does childbirth hurt sooo bad?!"
She chuckled and said,"Because God cursed us when Eve ate the fruit." I looked over at her and stated, "That had to be the weirdest answer a mother could give her daughter giving
She smiled and replied, "But it's the honest one."
I looked away from her and out the window. I deeply wished Justin was here and I wanted our argument to be in the past.
"You wish Justin was here, don't you?" I turned back to my mom and slowly nodded my head. "Mom,we had an argument and he stormed out...I just don't want him to miss his son's
She gently squeezed my arm and said, "Nash isn't here yet, sweetie. He still has time to get here."
I smiled but raised up a bit. "Wait...how did you know I was naming him Nash?" My mom leaned her chin on her hand and simply said," Matt gave it away when he came storming through the
We both laughed and waited for Dr. Lin to come in.
She came in wearing scrubs and a mask. "Gracie, you are ready to have a baby...are you ready to push?"
I glanced over at my mom. She held out her hand and asked, "Do you wanna give me some of the pain?"
I gently took her hand in mine. Dr. Lin sat down on a stool and said, "Ok, Gracie. I want you to push as hard as you can. We need to see if little man is ready to come."
I started pushing and crying. My mind was flooded with images of all the people in my life. I saw David and Logan, Roxy and Blade, Justin and Jared, my mom and dad, Matthew and my
grandma...everyone was there for me.
After the first push, Dr. Lin said, "Good job, Grace. I want you to do that again in a few
I nodded and looked at my mom again. She smiled and said, "You're doing a good job, honey." She wiped a tear from my eye and stated, "I am so proud of you."
"Mom...I need you to do me a favor. Go tell Matt to call Justin's brother, Jared. His number is in
my phone...tell him to get Justin here."
She stood up and walked over to the door. "Are you going to be ok without me?" With hesitation, I nodded.
Dr. Lin interrupted us and said, "Grace...it's time for another push."
The school building was completely dark except for one room. Jared followed closely behind
me and whispered, "Are you sure you want to confront this guy?"
I turned around and simply shushed my brother. We made our way down to the photography room. I peeked through the glass on the door and, sure enough, Logan was sitting at his desk.
"He's in there." I whispered.
Jared nodded and opened the door for me. Logan looked up and scrunched his eyebrows. "Justin Morgans?"
"Are you dating Grace?" I towered over his desk and demanded he tell me the answer.
Jared came up from behind and intently watched, making sure I wasn't going to throw a punch.
Logan folded his fingers together and replied, "I don't have to answer anythihng you ask me. Anything else I can do for you gentlemen?"
I tried jumping over the desk, but Jared pulled me back. "You stay away from her! You hear me?!"
Logan smiled and asked, "Are you worried I'll take the child, too?"
Jared's phone started ringing behind me and while he took the call, I used this opputunity to attach Logan.
I swung on him and hit him right in the jaw. "Hey! Justin, stop it! Hello? Who is this?" Jared yelled.
Every now and then, during the fight, I heard Jared's conversation. He sounded excited and concerned.
At the end, I heard Jared say, "I'll tell him. Alright, thanks!"
Logan hit me in the corner of the eye and I fell to the ground. "Get him out of here before I kill him!" Logan yelled.
Jared nodded and picked me up from the floor. "Justin! That was Matthew Baxter, Grace's friend...she's having the baby!"
My muscles instantly relaxed. "Grace is in labor?" I asked softly.
Jared nodded and smiled. I noticed Logan, out of the corner of my eye, moving to the door.
"Where are you going?" I demanded.
Logan smirked and said, "I'm going to the hospital...to see my girlfriend."
I had been in labor for 6 hours. My face and hair was covered in sweat and I was about to
Dr. Lin raised her head up and said, "Grace, I see his head. I think one more push will get him out."
I sighed and nodded my head. I looked over at the nurses helping Dr. Lin, and for the first time, realized David was helping.
"David?" He smiled and said,"I was wondering when you were going to recognize me."
I laughed and said, "Well you could've said something!" I watched him come over to my side and pat my arm. "Let's get little man out of you and then we'll talk, ok?"
Dr. Lin started yelling for me to push after three pushes, Nash was out of me.
I heard his little cries and Dr. Lin telling me how beautiful he was. I felt David's hand on my arm and I remember me telling him not to leave.
After about ten minutes, I felt the warmness and softness of a little baby blanket.
I looked down and saw Nash's little smushed face, his dark brown hair, his tiny fingers
and toes...he was perfect.
With happiness in my heart, I started crying and whispering, "Welcome to the world, little one!" My mom and Matthew came through the door and immediately started going gaga over Nash.
I fell asleep shortly after my mom took Nash out of my arms, but before I closed my eyes, I saw another person walk into my room.
It was Logan.
