Chapter 5:

Laying in bed, I kept thinking about how hesitant Matt's parents were. I could tell they were keeping something from me...but what?

I, basically, knew everything about that family! Louis' parents were illegal immigrants from Scotland, Helen had plastic surgery when she turned 21, and Matthew, I knew everything about him...until now.

The only thing that helped me fall asleep that night, was knowing that I got to talk to my dad. That was the first time since Christmas! I smiled as I thought about past memories before Japan declared war on the United States and my dad was 'officially' drafted.

Ever since then, our home has been crumbling. As soon as daddy left, my grandma fell down the stairs and broke her hip and that was when she was diagnosed with bone cancer.

My mom went into a depression and hardly spoke anymore. The only thing that cheered her up, was the first time daddy called her in Japan. He told her that the miltary provided cellphones and computers for all the soldiers so they could talk anytime he was free!

Although this made both of us happy, we knew it wouldn't be very frequent. He mostly contacted us on holidays and on our birthdays and anniversaries...and now, I've noticed that my parents have become very distant emotionally, also.

I tried to cast these thoughts out of my head and focus on Matt. I wanted to see him so bad-to hear his voice, feel his presence- and I would.

Drifting off, I began dreaming about Matt. In my dream, we were on top of that hill back during spring break. Our hands were intertwined and we were talking about our different futures.

All of a sudden, a dark, black mist began approacing us and I started screaming for Matt to run, but he couldn't hear me. Next thing I see, is Matt being picked up by the mist and carried away!

"MATT!!!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I awoke covered in a cold sweat and my heart beating rapidly. The nightmare made me even more determined to find Matthew today, however it would have to wait until school was over.
Stumbling out of bed, I looked out my window and saw that it was a perfect, cloudless, day. I smiled and watched nature at its best. Birds were chirping and singing loudly, squirrels darted across our lawn..into the trees, and flowers were in full bloom.
I walked over to my closet and picked out my faded jeans and a navy blue baby-doll top. I quickly ran mousse through my hair and teased it until I had beautiful, auburn waves. I grabbed my backpack and headed out the door...but I went back in and hurriedly ran up the stairs.
Sitting on my jewelry box, was my favorite bracelet. I gently picked up the white and pink peal bracelet and hooked it. I twirled my wrist letting the little heart charm glimmer in the sunlight and then went back downstairs.
When I walked into school, there was a huge mass of students outside of the office. I didn't recognize any of them...except the black-haired girl in the front.
Roxy Richards stood there with a skinny, black snake wrapped around her arm and waist. I gasped and backed away quickly.
She noticed me and said, "Oh hey, G! This is my pet, Lucifer." She moved the snake closer to me and I screamed.
"Get that thing away from me!" I nearly stepped on someone's foot, trying to get further away from Roxy.
She giggled and replied, "Chill. Lucifer's just a rat snake. He won't harm you." She began cooing at her snake and calling him 'good boy' like he was a dog!
"Why do you even have that at school?!" A bunch of students had gotten bored and began filtering out so all that remained was Roxy, a few bystanders, and me.
She looked at me like I was stupid and stated, "Duh! Lucifer likes car rides. I tried to get the AG-teacher to keep him for me, but he ran away screaming like a girl."
I smiled at her statement towards our farming instructor, Mr. Gordon. He was a little feminine.
Principal Newman came out of his office and, obviously, had seen her snake already. "Miss Richards, your mother is coming up here to pick up your 'pet'. You'll have to wait in the office with it until she comes."
"K." Roxy sat down with her snake and then looked at me and said, "Don't forget that you're walking me to Photography class, G."
I glanced at the snake once more and then replied, "Right. I haven't forgotten."
Walking out that office, I shuddered. Roxy was so bold and spontaneous. I don't understand why she would want to hang out with a quiet, shy, nature-freak like me.
But maybe I needed somebody in my life like Roxy...maybe, until I found Matthew, I need to start over and make new friends.
